Cohen did not bring her A game, Mao did not either. She planned on a 3A/2, and 3A, and maybe even another 3/3. She definitely planned on completing her combination spin. Anyway, as I mentioned before, Mao needs to enroll in the Lori Nichol training camping this summer, and repackage herself a bit in preparation for worlds 07, of course landing one of the three different quad jumps she has been landing in practice won't hurt either .

Mao did awesome for 15 years old in her first season (second comp) of seniors. If she planned a 3A/2 (which I believe you), then she thought VERY well on her feet as she completed all 3 of her possible combo jump passes, in spite of missing that one. I give her credit for being able to adapt like that. Getting the missed jump in (especially since she did it with 10% bonus) I'm sure made it worth missing the combo spin, if in fact that was the sacrificial lamb. Please note I am going totally by score sheets at this stage in the game.

SO Irina's score from Euros was 168.71

I think she had a very good SP, though. What was her FS score- that's what I want to know.
SP 65.02, LP 103.69

To see all the details, from the link I gave earlier click on "Starting Orders/Result Details" at the bottom, then Detailed Clasification. For all the details, join Doggygirl and me by clicking on Judges scores (pdf).

If she can do that, the other ladies might as well retitre now and beat the post-Olympic rush.

Even with the (apparenty improvised) jump layout as executed, the base value of her jump elements was almost 5 points higher than Sasha's (47.1 to 42.3), and almost 8 points higher than Irina's LP at Cup of China (39.4).

That's still the name of the game, Bielmanns and PCS notwithstanding.

Mao only landed one triple axel, and it received -.40 GOE. So even with mistakes of her own, Mao still would have beat a cleaner Sasha.

My mistake. I thought i read somewhere that Mao did both 3A's.

I think she's fully aware of this. It's not like she was (publicly) complaining about the results or anything. She KNOWS she didn't deserve to win here. But what you said is basically common sense.

Red Dog, Mao can't just simply turn the 2A into a 3A. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that would be a Zayak violation. I think the only way she can do 2 3A's is to put one in combination. 3 combos is the max, so to do a 3A combo she would have to eliminate another jump. So the point difference between a 2A and 3A isn't the whole picture - the actual result would be different, and most likely less than that.

Ah. I wasn't aware of that. Thanks. (See, I'm still learning here.)

SP 65.02, LP 103.69

See, Irina's score of 65 is pretty high. But it was her LP that brought her down. 103.69 is pretty low (for Irina), and if she scores anything like that in Torino, I'll take back what I said before and conclude that she is perfectly beatable- given that the others can bring on the heat.

Oh now Mathman - what fun would it be if everyone retired and just left Mao to - uh - perform alone post Oly's??? :) (side note - did you happen to download the SP highlights of Shiz and Mao from the video site? Just a few mainly jump and B-man highlights - but Mao looks just SO secure with her jumps. Bright future there IMO.)

Anyway, here is where I think Sasha is getting stuck. She SHINED early in the COP game, as COP plays to the non-jump element area that Sasha was already really good at. Since 2003, I think others have worked really hard to catch up in the non-jump arena. Shiz and Irena are just as capable of maxing non-jump element levels as is Sasha these days (or somewhere close).

Mean time, Irina has always had an advantage in the jump game. Sasha is still a bit iffy in that area (note fall on 3S today). While Sasha may be a little bit more secure in this department than she was a few years ago, she's still not what I would call solid, and IMO (but correct me if I'm wrong) hasn't really upped the ante technically with her jump content. So IMO, advantage Irina here.

I think Shiz is lurking right there in the wings. I hope she goes home now, and just works the heck out of these programs. She has GOT TO GOT TO get her tripples solid where she always fully rotates them, and /or doesn't double out on them so much.

I was actually glad to look at Shiz's LP sheet today and see that she did get in all three combos 3/2, 3/2, 3/2/2. (DANG the miss on the solo 3Z that ended up a bad 2Z). In the combo department, this is much better IMO than only doing 2 combos at COC, and having a 3/3 attempt downgraded to a 3/2. So if full rotation continues to be an issue, especially on 3/3 attempts, I hope she stays with 3/2's and a 3/2/2 and works on securing the other individual tripples.

OK - I'm sort of randomly musing through score sheets now with no particular point, which I'm sure is getting very old. So I shall close this post now!!

(This is in response to a post in the Edge. I just don't want to spoil TEB for people, so I'm posting my reply here).

You need to take another look at the score sheets, especially before you comment about Sasha's technical arsenal. I won't get into spoilers, but just take a look at the top ladies LP base values for the GP events held so far this season. Who knows how any of these ladies will skate in the future. Just look at the facts in hand.

and my response:

The score sheets are in fact very interesting. I don't even bother to look at them, but that was mainly because I didn't know how to access them before.

So it looks like Mao won basically on TES. Cohen outscored her on basically everything else! That 5 point difference in the TES is what gave Mao the lead in the SP (and eventually the win).

Shiz just BARELY eeked in 2nd in the FS. She and Cohen were SO close that it was only that fraction of a point difference in the TES that gave Shiz the lead. And had Cohen not fallen, she would have been 2nd. And once again, Mao wins solely on the TES mark. BOTH Shiz and Cohen outscored Mao on everything else.

It definitely puts things in a different perspective. However, that said, Mao is not what Arakawa and Cohen need to worry about- it's our OGM winner over here...

I'm going to go ahead and check out irina's scores from COC now, and add some more comments later.

The advantage Irina has right now is in the SP. This is where the other skaters have got to do something or Irina will have too big of a lead to make up. I'm forgetting about Mao as she isn't going to be at the olympics as I am looking at that right now. Sasha only got 1 level 4 in the SP. She's got to get those up to level 4 to get anywhere near Irina. If Shizuka doesn't stop underrotating her flip in the SP she should kiss the gold medal and possiblily a medal goodbye.

Believe it or not Sasha's tech base score in the LP is HIGHER than Irina's. Sasha had a 58.0 base at TEB and Irina a 57.8 That is mainly because she is doing 7 triples and Irina only 6. Sasha had 3 elements downgraded from Campbell's. Only had 1 level 4 in the LP. Her spiral got downgraded to a level 3 and another spin to a level 2 along with her footwork going down to a 2. The difference is that Irina executes her jumps better. Sasha just had all kinds of negative goe's on her jumps at TEB. Ended up with at tech score about the same as her base.

I think I'm going to call Irina "OGM" from now on

So, here is the OGM score from the COC SP:

70.22 38.50 31.72 8.05 7.65 8.00 7.90 8.05

And let's compare that to Mao from TEB (the first line) and Cohen from TEB (the second line)

63.96 36.60 27.36 6.90 6.55 7.05 6.80 6.90

60.96 31.80 29.16 7.40 6.90 7.45 7.20 7.50

And the FS. Irina's scores from the COC FS and then everyone else's from TEB:

OGM: 125.90 62.30 63.60 8.05 7.60 8.05 7.95 8.10
________________________________________________

Asada: 118.46 61.50 56.96 7.25 6.85 7.20 7.10 7.20

Arakawa: 115.32 56.60 58.72 7.55 7.00 7.40 7.35 7.40

Cohen: 114.16 56.20 58.96 7.50 7.05 7.40 7.45 7.45

It's all in the numbers. And I must say, these are supposedly the top contenders to beat Slutskaya. But she's in her own league right now.

Irina's Jumps

O.k. let's talk about Irina's jumps. She has little or no run out. Sometimes she just comes to a dead stop and then tries to camouflage it. She also tends to land forward or bent over. Her jumps are high and that's about it. They are not text book perfect, and yet she is never marked down on them when they aren't. She used to be under the 6.0 system and SHOULD be under this system. When she does them well she should be rewarded but she should get nailed on execution when she screws up. The judges are nailing Sasha for two footing jumps and Shizuka for under rotation, why not nail Irina for lack of run out?

Red Dog, what impresses me most about these numbers is that Mao almost held her own in program component scores against both Sasha and Shizuka -- two of the most refined and artistic skaters on the ice.

On the other hand, I am not overly impressed with analysis of base values for jumps, etc. Yes, if Sasha hadn't fallen on her Salchow she would have scored higher. And if I had hit a home run instead of striking out, I would have won that baseball game, too.

Red Dog, I think you will find the score sheets far more telling if you dig a bit deeper. Simply looking at total TSS, TES, PCS and the PCS breakdown isn't where I anyway, find the most telling things. It's in the elements for me, especially when comparing top skaters who are close to each other. Especially across competitions - TES tells more IMO than PCS does across comps.

Here's an example, when examining why Irina scored 70 in the SP at COC. Look at the GOE. Irina did a "clean" program (according to the judges, which I define as no negative GOE on any elements). She got +7 GOE - in the SHORT program. I believe that was a result of skating 100% clean with strong, well executed high level elements, and skating WITH attack and WITH verve and WITH showmanship.

Ironically while many people are complaining about Irina's PCS scores, she was only scored about 1.5 points higher on total PCS (for SP) at COC than she was at World's. And IMO, her COC SP was performed better than her SP at World's, so that small uptick in PCS is OK. The real story of the 70 point SP is to be found in TES.

The LP is interesting in the other direction. Her World's LP (IMO) was one of those "on fire" performances. It was clean if you go by my definition, which is NO negative GOE on any elements. (that was not the case in her LP at COC). Her total score and PCS were higher for that "on fire" LP at world's than at COC.

I really enjoy forming my own opinions, which naturally in this sport, involve my subjective preferences. But I can now combine my preferences with the facts that are readily available from the judges' and technical caller's perspective.

Just my 2 cents,
DG

RD - You're making Sasha into a poor underdog and hoping the underdog will win but she is the top contender to beat Irina and has been since 2005 Worlds.
Shizuka is next in line and is coming along just fine and may beat the two of them. We won't know now until Torino.

I am guessing from how it was marked that Sasha's sequence was flawed, too. Maybe a two foot or hand down? Haven't seen a review yet, so I don't know for sure. I don't remember seeing her do that sequence before. I am wondering why so many of her levels went down from Campbells since she has been writing how she and Nicks have been working on upping he rlevels and transitions.

LBC, I totally agree with you that Sasha does in fact, have the technical content (especially if planned = actual) to rival Irina. She has just GOT to get some clean skates under her belt. I really think Irina's "crushing" SP score at COC had to do with the fact that she not only did all of the elements cleanly, she did them ALL cleanly in a very commanding and confident way. IMO, that is what will make Irina difficult to beat if she keeps skating this way through the season. It's not about PCS gifts IMO.

Or could because of her just recovery from the injury. Can't hit or hold her positions long enough for it to be count.
Or could it be coming into the Campbells, she was more well prepared than to TEB, because she and Nicks knew she was up against Kwan and Arakawa (was she there?) at Campbells.

AFAIK, both Cohen and Kwan keep close tabs on each other. Even if they don't, ppl around them do. There are quite few skaters skates at both rinks.

She certainly did, but she's got some work to do still. Think if she could develop some presentation skills. Watch out Irina.

Yes, very true. A win is a win, and a loss is a loss, no matter how close or far you may have been.

That's one thing Irina does right. She commands the ice, is a powerful performer, and is VERY consistent. And ITA, too, that that will make her very difficult to beat if she keeps that up. She's showing no signs of slowing down.

But my real beef is that I think Irina's being scored a little higher sometimes than she should be.

Ironically while many people are complaining about Irina's PCS scores, she was only scored about 1.5 points higher on total PCS (for SP) at COC than she was at World's. She DID get a bunch of high 7s and low 8's, though (in the COC SP). I believe Irina's Moscow LP score was something like 132? I don't think ANY other skater on their best day can post a score like that. MAYBE, maybe Cohen but she'd have to light the place on fire (maybe literally, too  )

I'm not so much into analyzing and looking into these sheets. They are fun to look at just to see where everyone is, and to attempt making predictions for future competitions, but that's about it.

LBC, I totally agree with you that Sasha does in fact, have the technical content (especially if planned = actual) to rival Irina. She has just GOT to get some clean skates under her belt. Well, we'll see. But IMO it's NOT about getting clean skates under your belt. All it takes is that ONE performance, and you can be as inconsistent as ever, but if it all comes together in the most important event of the season, you still achieve your goal. Remember, this is not a lifetime achievement award- it's simply who wins that night. Even the best of the best have off nights every now and then.

Now, granted, getting "clean skates under [one's] belt" helps build confidence. But I would be more worried about a skater who comes crashing through the gate, because by the time Feb. rolls around, will you still have some left in you? Irina is doing well now, but will she continue to? IIRC she has one more event, then the GPF. Let's see how she does there. She's basically all but guaranteed a win, but it would be interesting to look at point values.

RD - You're making Sasha into a poor underdog and hoping the underdog will win but she is the top contender to beat Irina and has been since 2005 Worlds.

Perhaps, but...

Irina's got consistency across the board. Cohen does not.

Irina (lately) has not been skating with caution. Can't say the same for Cohen

BUT- it seems like Cohen has a one-jump advantage over Slutskaya. Can she fully utilize that advantage? She's going to HAVE to land all seven of those jumps to win the OGM. It's that simple. Even a single stumble, two-foot or save could be the end. Not to mention STOP SKATING CAUTIOUSLY. I can't possibly stress that enough.

It's not necessarily about making Cohen into an underdog. I already said she will be the American favorite. She WILL be a favorite whether she likes it or not. Nothing I say or do can stop that. But you're certainly right, she is one of the top contenders. But keep in mind that there's Irina. Then there's Arakawa, Cohen, and the others.

RD, I don't know who posted this. But I borrow it from your quote.

That's the point of 'setup'. I said it similar in another thread. Her last worlds' SP score made any (higher) score of her SP in future looks justifiable to the public........just like Carolina's 2004 Worlds' LP score made any of her future (higher) score justifiable......I'm not saying they will not deserve the higher score they got in future competetions when they skate well.
