Ladies Short Program - SHOWDOWN - Asada vs. Meissner

Yikes...I thought this was about the showdown between Asada and Meissner....not the bash Kimmie and/or Mao thread!!! So far off the point.

If you need to bash Kimmie, I believe that their is a thread in the Edge for this.

I think the thing that keeps me from being completely excited about Mao is the few types of triples she does. I wish the CoP had some way to reward skaters with the complete arsenal of triples -- or for doing more of the different jumps.

Well, and I guess based on last season's programs (because I haven't seen this season's yet), I thought both Mao and Yu-Na weren't quite "soup" yet, though I love watching them both. Look forward to catching this season's programs from so many of the ladies (Asada, Yu-Na Kim, Meissner, Zhang, Nagasu, Wagner, Flatt (wish she were old enough to be eligible for Worlds) ... but I'm getting off topic.

At least not yet... but its still early in the season, viewership isn't a given and folks haven't had the opportunity to really experience the drama yet... give it a couple of weeks when the "wuz robbed" starts and then use of the word "haters" will become a memory of the good ol' days... :laugh:

No kidding. You wait till the big events come...

But I think a major difference is that the current generation (at least on this board/this country) has not been around long enough for people to have "vested favorites". I don't see anyone putting themselves on the chopping block for Meissner, for example (actually, that's pretty :rofl: when I think about it...but it may not be in 3 years)
 
i am stunned that Mao again did not do a clean short. Mabye the chreography and steps are too difficult and she is losing the timing of the jumps. same mistake at Skate america. I hope that she can pull it togther in the LP, but there is no talk whatsover of a 3 axel. wierd. Maybe she will not do them anymore?
 
I find it strange that amongst the top women, the common mistake now is to single the back end of their triple triple, rather than do it as a double.

The choreography and steps are too difficult and that's what is ruining her timing on the jumps? But she plans her 3F-3L and all of her jumps in the SP before she does any other elements or gets into the music at all... So I don't buy that excuse.

Last year the ladies were more consistent with their 3-3s in the SPs. Not sure who to root for between Kimmie and Mao for Gold, but I hope they bring their best stuff and fully rotate their jumps.

True, but look at what happened to Lepisto in the FS at Skate Canada. I recall being very impressed with up-and-comers Meissner and Gedevanishvili after seeing their SP's at the Torino Winter Olympics. Then Meissner's FS was just okay and Gede's not so good.

Glebova's three last programs (including this SP) have all been personal bests, so I think many of us didn't know who she was.

That is sad. I think their is too much pressure on her somtimes. She is expected to be the superwomen of womens skating and to always be sensational, despite that is yet to win a World title as I said. Too much on her shoulders at times perhaps.

hmm, I think it might have more to do with her possibly being "perfectionist", which, if true, does not bode too well for her in the long term imo...

It does seem strange, though, that Asada and Meissner -- two skaters regarded as good jumpers -- have to rely on PCSs to take the lead.
 
Yes, yes, speculate all of you.

I saw her LIVE in Quebec and the SP was iffy thoughout. I don't see how she could get so upset over this. If I remember correctly, she had a not so great SP in Tokyo Worlds. However, she always comes through with the LP. You will see.

Not sure why this thread is called a SHOWDOWN? A Gold Medal v. a Non Medal :confused: I would think a showdown would be between Asada and Kim which we will not see until the Finals.

This was possibly Mao's worst skate. She really let her mistake affect rest of the program. She was still fluid, as always, but her lively, cheerful personality was totally missing. I don't know what's going on with her. But she really should fix her flutz and learn to fully rotate triples. Otherwise, I'm afraid 2010 Olympics is going to be "showdown" between Yuna and Caroline. She might need to consider dumping Rafael and work with Tarasova or Mishin.

I think she lost points on a spin. You'll have to check protocols. It was a lovely program except for that mistake on the spin. And it wasn't noticeable to the rest of us. I was shocked at her score too.
