Ladies Short Program - SHOWDOWN - Asada vs. Meissner

For those still unconvinced:

he top contender is Japan's Mao Asada, the current world runner-up. She won the gold medal at Skate Canada two weeks ago with 177.66 points, 14.43 more than Meissner earned at Skate America.

no reason not to think Asada won't come back and clean house tomorrow

Red Dog, you have no idea how badly dinged Mao would have been by the overly strict technical caller at Skate America had she competed there. I must say I'm tired of the impression on skating forums that the competition is always between Mao and Yu-Na, 2 skaters without a world title mind you, and no one else stands a chance. Why even bother watching figure skating then? Haven't the 2002 and 2006 Olympic and 2006 and 2007 Worlds ladies competitions taught us anything? If Mao wins TEB, good for her. If Kimmie wins it, good for her. If Sarah wins it, good for her. It's all good, but please don't reduce it to a 1 lady show.

That's why it's so fun to watch/follow...Irina was cleaning house in the 05/06 season and it got to the point where most folks were saying, just mail her the OGM. Well, we get to the Palavela and not only does she get beaten by Arakawa, but also by a sub-par Cohen

not a done deal yet, but I will seriously flip over if Meissner pulls off the upset. Has Meissner ever beaten Asada before (and I mean overall, not just in SP/LP)?

That is sad. I think their is too much pressure on her somtimes. She is expected to be the superwomen of womens skating and to always be sensational, despite that is yet to win a World title as I said. Too much on her shoulders at times perhaps.

I agree. I can't imagine the kind of pressure she must be under given the state of figure skating in Japan right now. I hope this doesn't become some huge mental block for her. Poor Mao :frown:

Glebova also had a clean 3T+3T SP at Skate Canada. Her 2A+3T+2T x in the FS at SC is the 2nd highest scoring element so far this season, only trailing Kim's 3F+3T at Cup of Russia. Wagner is the stronger FS program skater, though, because Glebova apparently still struggles with her 3Lz and 3F.

interesting! i was watching some older youtube vids of yuna kim, and saw her do her signature ina-bauer followed up with the 2-axe-3-toe-2-toe 3 jump combo which was really nice, was thinking she should bring that back into her programs in the future.

Glebova rocked. She wuzrobbed of PCS! I hope she hangs on to a podium spot. If she, Vähämaa and Lepistö bring it to Europeans, Carolina Kostner is going to be in so much trouble.

hmm, I think it might have more to do with her possibly being "perfectionist", which, if true, does not bode too well for her in the long term imo...

Not "possibly", she "is" a perfectionist who's imaginary perfection is climbing at a higher speed than that of her ability, though the latter is superb as it is.
She probably can't forgive herself because her tech layout was safety oriented but she still failed to be totally clean.
These are all IMO.

poor mao looks so downtrodden in the kiss and cry...

i don't think she did such a bad job. i don't kow if it's the camera angle (MUCH better than cup of china!) but her jumps all seemed much higher than i remember them being before, and her spiral is lovely. spins and overall footwork etc seemed kinda slow... could be because she was feeling dejected after the missed combo. but overall i see an improvement in her posturing and arm movements etc from last season. she still always has that deer-in-the-headlights look though.

This was possibly Mao's worst skate. She really let her mistake affect rest of the program. She was still fluid, as always, but her lively, cheerful personality was totally missing. I don't know what's going on with her. But she really should fix her flutz and learn to fully rotate triples. Otherwise, I'm afraid 2010 Olympics is going to be "showdown" between Yuna and Caroline. She might need to consider dumping Rafael and work with Tarasova or Mishin.

Yeah since Caroline has no flutz and fully rotates her triples.

Caroline is only lady to land two 3-3 in one competition this season, and her flutz is not as bad as Mao's (GOEwise at least). Only thing is 2010 is about the time she will be going through growth spurt.

I haven't been able to read the thread - but thanks to those who provided scores and commentary (I will get to it!). I really, really like Mao's program. I cannot tell her flip from her lutz in this program, but loved the height and body positions. I wonder what is making the loop on the combo hard for her - it looked to me like she was so pre-rotated but pre-spring that she just couldn't get if off - does anyone with technical knowledge know what is the problem she faced today?

I also love, love, love her spiral, her footwork is great, and her presence in this video really grabbed me.

Anyone have a link to Kimmie?

And, I feel sad for Mira - I was hoping for a great skate. Good luck to her and all the others in the LP

Caroline's flutz not as bad as Mao's?!? Ummm ok. Caroline may be the first to land 2 sort of recognizable 3-3s in one competition this season (which get downgraded anyway), but many others are capable of doing it including Mao even if in only 1 full competition for many they havent yet; more significantly Caroline has yet to crack 100 in the LP this season.

Well perhaps but Caroline's point totals are still not much to write home about, and Mao and Yu-na at this point last season were hitting their 3/3's as well. I think there's just a lot of pressure on both girls. Although seeing as Yu-na landed her 3/3 easily in the long, I think we wll see Yu-na hit hers in Cup of Russia.

I feel for Mao, reports were that she was hitting that 3/3 easily in practice and so I think it's a mental thing. I can't imagine the Pressure Mao is under (or feels she's under.)
