Ladies Short

Placements and scores were fair (slightly inflated yes, but nothing i'm to surprised or overly upset about)

Regarding Joannie,

She use to get very high PCS. Then fell out of favor with some not-so-stellar programs and jump inconsistency. And to be honest, regarding the technical aspect, yes Joannie does everything just above average, so she'll get +1 on some elements which is right. And many skaters can't even do all elements at Average at best, hence why her technical scores are always strong and consistent. So I think her scores in that dept. has always been right.

^^ Well, there was the china bull comment someone made in this thread and in another thread she was called a drag queen by someone, so yeah, Joannie has been the target of hostile aggressiveness from some posters. *sigh*

None of these skaters deserve to be called such names. :(

Um, ok, if it wasn't me, then that's fine.

::blushes:: :p

But I still see no hate directed at Joannie herself in any of the posts in this thread thus far.

It's the sarcastic blame towards Joannie that her marks are too high that I am talking about.

None of these skaters deserve to be called such names. :(
You are so right about that!

Yes, you have your freedom of expression. But, in my humble opinion, you definitely crossed the line when you linked Joannie's marks to Olympics. Last thing we need on this forum is another conspiracy theory. One thing about the web forum is once you hit "submit post" button is for thousands others to read. So in a sense, we all should learn to take on some responsibility for what we say on the forum. It is a bit different from gossiping between a few people in a privage setting.

How low can we get collectively as a forum group? And I admit that I'm guilty of gossiping here to some extent.

But here's the thing - my intent really isn't to advance any conspiracy theory; I truly do believe that Joannie is being held up because the next Olympics are being held in Canada. At least, this scenario is a possibility, IMO. Same goes with Patrick Chan, who I just don't believe should have won SC with that flawed of a LP. I can't think of any reason why these two skaters in particular (Patrick to a lesser extent, because I'm not well-versed in men's skating) are being overscored other than the reason I have advanced. And again it's just IMO, but I truly don't think a couple of posts in a FS forum is gonna do much to set in stone the idea that Canadian skaters are being held up because of the 2010 Olympics. It's just a theory, and not an absolute one at that.

I think the point that another poster brought up in this thread is very relevant - Joannie had the exact same mistake as Bebe in the short (fall on a triple and no combo), so why on earth is she so much better that she deserves to be 10 points ahead of Bebe?

It's a widely known fact that figure skating judges favor skaters who are known to be more consistent and in terms of consistency, Joannie skates with the consistency of Michelle Kwan compared to Bebe Liang. Joannie has a history of skating 5-7 triple LPs on a pretty consistent basis. It's a VERY RARE thing to see Bebe land 5 triples, let alone 6 or 7, like Joannie does.

So you are saying that in a close competition, the history of the skater is taken into account as well as what the skater actually does. Is that correct? and do you agree to it?

I fully believe that Joannie is a better skater than Bebe. Joannie lands her jumps more consistently than Bebe. Absolutely the history of the skater is taken into account in a close competition. How is this news to anyone who watches figure skating? I think first and foremost, the judges should examine the performances in front of them. Bebe did not outskate Joannie in this competition. Joannie has the better record and I see her as the better skater. Rochette deserves the high PCS marks she gets, IMO.

Interesting theory. Any interest in doing some research of the past records to back up your theory? It will be awesome, if you can throw in some historical records to your theory.

why so much hate on Joannie now? is it because she's actually been doing well, and some people don't like it?? i really don't understand it; i've been a fan of Joannie for around 4 years and i think she's great. She's no ballerina, but hey, not every skater has to be. I also don't see how people could say her SC win was rigged, because she did a beautiful job. high scores, fine, some can think that. but do they really think Fumie Suguri should have won?

There are some of us here that can't watch the competition. We come to the thread to hear about how the skater did....ie....did they fall, did they pop a jump....did they miss a spin etc. So it really disheartens me when I come on a thread to find out how a skater did and all I read about is how much the judges did this or the judges did that or how this person is a hater of this group of people or this skater and so on and so on.There is always going to be someone who thinks the judging is rigged, someone who thinks that one skater was help up for whatever reason and someone who thinks that one skater was held down for another reason. The back and forth banter is really getting old and in my opinion is really pointless. And personally I am sick of reading it on this thread and on so many other threads. So perhaps we can stick to the topic of the thread so that people like me can read the the comments from the nice people who are kind enough to do a play by play for those of us that can't watch it. If you want to bash on each other and on all the skaters then please.....make another thread!!!

Nope, no interest. I'm chatting about figure skating, not writing a term paper. I believe it's true, however, and I sure do know nationality isn't clouding my judgment.

I'm sure there have been past occurrences where athletes were held up or overscored because they hailed from the host nation of the event. And I'm talking about all sports, not just figure skating.

What's the fuss if somebody proposes a theory, even if it's a conspiracy theory in your eyes on a forum like this? What line has he or she crossed? What harm has he or she done anyway?

Looks to me some people really enjoy censorship.

any videos on youtube yet? I am a bit disappointed in both Joannie and Mao for not skating clean. I wanted to see if Joannie and Mao could come close to Yuna's score at skate america. At least Joannie skated clean at skate canada but Mao.. when was the last time she skated clean? I can't remember anymore.

As for Caroline... whatever happened to her? She was so consistant last season but the growth spurt must be throwing her off.

I think one's judgement can be clouded by more than just nationality....

For the record, I think that it must be noted that Rochette and Chan both have excellent skating skills which gives them the high PCS. Now maybe being Canadian is helping them a bit.. But I don't think it's to the extent that your suggesting.

ya know, the ice is slippery and each rink is different.

I kinda look at it as - I was born raised and still live in Alaska, I walk in the snow and on ice on a daily basis. Most days I keep my balance, then there are other times I slip and land on my keester. Same with driving on the stuff... can't imagine it's any different for a skater. I just don't have the whole experience of being nitpicked by judges or the media... much less fans.

Not a bad idea though.. " The Bashing thread" ... Good for a lot of posters here, bad for Carolina Kostner and Joannie Rochette I'd say...

The first video I found on youtube is Mao:
