Ladies Short

 I just realized that my cat is an Asada-fan. He keeps saying 'mao' all the time. My brother says he's communist, but now I know for certain that he's a figure skating fan

Mao is actaully the Chinese word for cat.. I actually would like to change my cat Pumpkin's name to Mao.. After the Chinese word for Cat and Mao Asada, but my roommate/nother gets all upset, you can't give him a Communist dictator's name. He's not Chinese he's an American cat.

Wow, big surprise. Sorry for the skaters who had more mistakes than expected. But for the audience, it is now interesting that we get to see a close competition between Rochette and Mao. It would be really an interesting big shake if Rochette wins.

That's why we can't understand each other sometimes! He speaks Chinese! Thanks, bekalc, that explained a lot! ;) I feel like I just had a revelation! That's why he is so upset! He just want to watch Mao, but I insist watching the men first. I think we'll have a much better communication from now on. I have to think of his feeling too. Tomorrow night, it's me and Leo watching the ladies final!

:agree:

I have a feeling Rochette is going to win this, but it will take mistakes from Mao. Which I don't want to happen seeing how upset Mao looked after the short...

While Mao's transitions are better than Yu-na's, I prefer Yu-na's program as a whole. The reason being that at first Mao's music seemed beautiful, but after awhile it really started to grate on me....Maybe it was the audio??? I like Yu-na's program as a concept better. Even though Mao is lovely to watch and her transitions rock.

lol. love your post!

any videos on youtube yet? I am a bit disappointed in both Joannie and Mao for not skating clean. I wanted to see if Joannie and Mao could come close to Yuna's score at skate america. At least Joannie skated clean at skate canada but Mao.. when was the last time she skated clean? I can't remember anymore.

As for Caroline... whatever happened to her? She was so consistant last season but the growth spurt must be throwing her off.

Don't worry about it too much. Both Mao and Joannie have history with some kind of mistake in the SP. Both of them are more of a LP skaters. It's strange, but don't ask me why. Mao did skate clean at last year 4CC, JPN National and World.

IMO Mao should don't even need to worry about the flutz deduction too much. She will only attempt one in the FS anyway and the 1.5-2.0 -GOE can be make up with other elements like spins, spiral, etc. Her clean LP even with the flutz is near the 130+ range and so far the only skater capable of reaching that landmark is Yuna. If the judges are going to nail skaters with Lip this season as much as the Flutz, both Mao and Yuna are neck to neck. No skater is perfect.

And everything else Mao did was light years ahead of Joannie.
Sorry, I don't see the light years there.

Exactly. The answer is no, IMO. Joannie is being overscored, there's no doubt in my mind. A fall and no combo is about equal with doubling of a triple and singling of a 2nd jump in a combo (which Mao did, by the way). And there's no way Joannie's +GOE on her spins and spirals should be higher than Mao's in those same areas. Also, I'm not sure Mao flutzed this time around.

It's nice that Joannie is being held up with those big fat PCS scores as well.
I find it ridiculous that you are calling Joannie overscored while finding nothing wrong with the scored received by the skater below her who made mistakes on TWO jumping passes.

And it's nice that Ando, Kim and Asada have all been held up in PCS forever.

Exactly... And psychologically she would have one element less to worry about since her old flutz was pretty consistent at least ( in contrast to her new flutz obviously  )

Wow. What is going on?? will yu-na be the only lady skating well? I thought mao would blow the everyone else away. She must be very dissipointed, dispite the fact that she will probably win the LP by 10 points. Joannie in 1st, with a fall!

what exactly happened with Emily and Caroline? Did Caroline fall on the 2 axel?

I disagree that everything Mao did was light years better than Rochette. Rochette's triple lutz was CERTAINLY better than Mao's double lutz.

Joannie and Mao have completely different styles.. It's like comparing Johnny Weir to Kurt Browning. How do you do that? In fact, while watching Joannie skate she was reminding me of Browning a bit.

Rochette has can I say it again excellent, excellent basic skating skills. She's not a ballerina but she's got good musicality and her expression is a lot better than Mao's expression....

Today, Mao sounded scratchy, which is weird because Asada never sounds scratchy... It was not Mao's best outing by any means... And let's point out that Rochette recovered from her fall to nail everything else, while Mao made another mistake and was behind her music...

I think both Rochette and Mao have their strengths and in the end I prefer Mao. But I'm sorry Rochette does not deserve to be lambested the way she's being lambested. She's a fantastic skater, with great technique.

Wahtching Mao's SP...

Musicality & Choreo:
Her movement & the music still goes separate.
But quite better movement of upper body than before.
Not impressive face expression but better use of her eyes than before.
She (or her body ) needs to understand the music more deeply.

Jump:
Maybe Not ready yet.
Should be better in the next.
Still fluts.

Skating:
Great transition as always.
Enhanced Spiral. Much enhanced.
Quite nice steps.
Interesting spin variation.

Thank you bek. Kim and Asada are excellent and in many ways very similar; Rochette is a completely different kind of skater, but has her own great qualities. I don't understand why just because some cannot see the excellene in certain skaters they need to force us all to turn blind too.

@yunaddiction,better use of her eyes?? Are you talking about furowed brows? I watched Mao's program on Daum and YouTube, but it's real hard to decipher her eye movements. I agree though, she still needs to work on facial expression-esp. when they did a close-up on her face during her spirals.
Anyways, Mao's got a great step sequence but her sp felt really draining to me. Maybe her jumping flubs effected the overall mood of the routine. I don't know, this sp is my least favorite of Mao's.
Joannie seemed less assertive compared to her previous competition. I don't think she was overscored though & I think she deserves to be in first. She's a solid skater and her positions have improved greatly.
I love Caroline but she probably has to just completely abandon her unorthodox jumping technique & just attack, attack, attack to garner speed for better entries in to her jumps.
Overall though, I was sort of disappointed w/the ladies' short.

Mao's lutz was marked "!". Avoiding "e" would be fine for today. In the FS, she plans one triple axel in a combo. One mistake won't matter anyway, Rochette can never skate clean.

Where did you get this information from? icenetwork hasn't posted the score sheets yet, right?

I don't like that kind of comment.

She can never skate clean?
Or you hope she cannot...

Mao deserved to win this SP.

The problem with the judging here was the massive negative GOE she got her for Triple Flip because of singling the second jump. Failing to do an element in the SP should result in a 1 point deduction, not negative GOE on the element.

Joannie also failed to do the minimum combination required (Triple-Double) but, because of the current rules, she didn't get any deduction. She already had -3 GOE on her Flip because she FELL on it.
