Ladies SP

I did not see all the skaters but I just loved Joannies SP!Such joy and she really reached out to the public.I have not had that feeling since Kwan's programs.
Her jumps looks good too, especially the 2A, what height!

Caroline looked nervous and slow but I am sure she will shake it off and actually "attack" her LP tomorrow.

I missed Fumies SP but it seems that she has found some new motivation, JP nationals are going to be exciting :)

I missed the first few skaters, but it seems to me that it wasn't the home ice advantage that helped Joannie so much as being the only skater who was relatively clean and actually interesting. Good for her. She should rethink the costume, though.

Fumie - nice to see her in good form, but the step sequence has got to go. It was three feet, stop, three feet, stop. Also, I understand you must have upper body movement but really it's getting to the point where it's coming at the expense of the steps. It should be a step sequence. Perhaps the ISU needs a reminder.

The two falls are very unfortunate. It looked almost as though she caught something.
Re Kostner: I thought so too. But I couldn't really see anything on the replay. Does a skater get the deduction for a fall if it's because of something on the ice? If so, I don't think it's fair. I don't expect Carolina to stay in 7th, of course.
Wow so far the women's programs seem to be very underwhelming. Very interesting!!
I can't remember the last time I watched a ladies' event that wasn't underwhelming. What on earth is going on? Is it CoP? Nerves? The talent is there, but it seems to me as though there just aren't enough good performances at many events.

Fumie's pcs is criminal. She shouldn't get any 5s.
2nd best Japanese lady's spot is wide open and so is world bronze.

you mean that Fumie will finish third at Worlds? This is like a dream for me. She's always been my girl

Caroline didn't flutz. She did a 3F.

Caroline looked out of it in the warm-up, too. She didn't look sharp, like she was affected by nerves/anxiety/lack of sleep (too young for that, isn't it?) . And she didn't attack the 3F in the SP. Actually, the landing looked okay (though might still be border-line downgradable), she just didn't look like she had the confidence or energy to pull it through.
The icenetwork video feed froze on me as Caroline started skating and I had close and relaunch it but by then I missed all of her jumps. The replays of her 3F and 3Lo appeared to have better height than last year. I didn't see her being close to under-rotated on the 3F, just that she missed the landing. The 3Lo looked solid. How was her 2A?

Once I got the video back, what remained was Caroline skating slowly. I'm surprised that she still lets technical problems affect her presentation. Well, I loved her costume like usual and her layback positions were perhaps even better than before though she didn't spin as fast.

It was smart to add the 2T to 3R (like Mirai last week at SA), since she'd already gotten -3 for the 3Z anyway (lack of footwork into it cannot affect GOE.
According to the reports, she wisely practiced that possible scenario. Perhaps she should have practiced recovering her presentation after a fall too.

I love Joannie, but her score was too high for that program. She was clearly the best today, but is too far ahead. I don't have an issue with Zhang's score (she did a flip, not a flutz btw....mentioned in a previous post).

Fumie's triple flutz appeared to be underrotated (would've been considered underrotated at Skate America). She doesn't seem to have quite the same spark as she used to, but she looked much better than last season. My only issue w/Suguri being ahead of Zhang is the combo. I would've downgraded it for sure.

I wonder why Zhang looked out of it. She practiced well yesterday and has experience. I bet she'll come back in the long; she is a fighter. The flip looked off. It looked completely rotated. I wonder if she was nervous on it because she didn't do her combo during her run-through yesterday, but did land several clean 3/3 combos. She does look to be skating a bit faster, but I still don't understand why she almost comes to a stop before her double axel. That is funky technique.

Wow. I thought it could happen after I watched Caro K's performances at Carl Shefer Memorial but 7th?? That is a real shocker.

I totally agree with the top three placement though I felt there might have been just a little bit of score inflation.
Anyway I was rooting for Joannie so I'm very happy for her! I wish she can do it again in her LP!
I also like Carol's step sequence especially that sit-spin like looking part.
And I'm quite impressed with Fumie!! I'm so happy she came back strong.:)
Am I the only one who thinks she looks great in her SP costume?

Joannie's SP was the best, but over-marked IMHO, considering that turn-out after her 3F.
The rule is:
Combo: 2 three turns inbetween (a touch down [with the free foot or not] without weight transfer possible) –2, –GOE
http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=934
We'll see if the judges scored that correctly. Joannie's jumps were big and/or some other things might have made up for the off combo.

We corrected that at the same time. Perhaps the poster was referring to her high leg kick.

Maybe Caroline got ahead of herself by thinking "I need to rip the 3T" when she should've been thinking "I need to land the 3F" first. Still a mistake regardless.

She's still coming to a stop? The only thing that comes to mind is that she is afraid of doing what Mao did at Worlds. I think that if she turns her (takeoff) foot in a little, then she doesn't need to worry about her foot sliding out from under her. Any ideas? Did she do a spread eagle into the 2A? She did her best 2A's after that last year.

Joannie getting decent plus overmarked score at Skate Canada. wonders.

who knew.
Canada complained the she didn't get into theGPF the last twoyears,
justlike the us complained about Kimmie, sothey somewhat overmarkedher so
she might win.toguarantee her spot in the final.

They slamed the pcs scores of the us tokeepthem down.
Why--they don't want Mirai,Kimmie andRachel to look bad.
They want them tolook unbeatable.

Mirai pcs was overmarkedin Skate America.
Caroline Zhangs abit undermarked.
They took the maximum off .
Seems like they overmarked Caroline Kostners pcs scores againand didn't takeoff enough (not the maxiumum on the technique.)
Want to bet they ratifiedJoannies triple/triple.

You forgot they ratifed Caroline Zhange triple/triple atlast years GPF.
Maybe the US skaters knewthey wasn't going to get the scores.
Becuase they stated the Cream of the Crop was at last weeks SkateAmerica and the rest of the skaters are junk.
In other words, they will forever hold up Kimmie,Mirai,Rachel at the EXPENSE of the other US Skaters.
I for one find that rude and uncalled for.Racist, discrimmatoryand elitist.

Make apredication Joannie canblow herprogramand stillwin.why they been doing it sincetheCOP started.
Also they didn't take enought off for Joannie mess up. They didn'twatchclosely.

Onlyon the us skaters.

They, they, they... please. Hold the conspiracy theories. As for racism, it doesn't even make sense. What could you possibly be talking about?

The 5's for Caroline Zhange uncalled for.

I can bythe 7's for Joannie provided i felt something.
Ididn't
I by high 6's and some 7's for Joannie but not all..

Caroline Kostners, mightbe a bit high. but ican buythat.
Fumieswas atad highalso. but otherwiseokay.

Congrats to Joannie, Fumie and Caroline. It seems like all of the US ladies had a fall. I am so happy for Fumie and Joannie. I cannot comment on the skating as I was at work and could not access icenetwork. to watch. What a score for Joannie huh, she has a nice cushion going into the LP. I can't wait to see the programs.

Zhang was sloooww as can be, and she was not exactly connected with her music. Zhang's basic skating skills are NOT top level and it was reflected in her PCS. Going after Joannie definetly didn't help things for her. Because the judges saw a GREAT basic skater and then saw a mediocre one.

I've only just seen a few programs on YouTube (the stupid live feed kept spazzing out on me).

Shame about the fall in Caroline's program. Aside from that error, it was easily the best SP for me. Some of the new moves she's incorporated are wicked. She's obviously taller and faster, too, I thought. I was afraid the music would be a drip, but it was just the opposite.

The other skater I liked was Nana Takeda, who I've never seen before this. Beautiful, clean jumps and just overall a very sound skater. I loved the beginning parts of her music, but the later sections were too frantic for me.

Loved Fumie's jumps but, overall, she was rather sloppy. There was one spin that really travelled, and her spiral was poor. Loved her music, though.

Alissa...sigh...what more needs to be said.

Off to try and dig up Joannie and Carolina's programs.

She's still coming to a stop before it. She didn't do a spread eagle, to my recollection. I do think it's funky technique, rather than being afraid of splatting, since she pretty much always comes to a stop before her 2A. Some skaters just have issues with that jump - Glebova for instance, has a horrid 2A despite having nice height on her other jumps; Kostner's worst jump is her 2A....

Me too. Here's a YouTube search using "Skate Canada 2008 SP". http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=skate+canada+2008+SP&search_type=&aq=f

Feraina was right again about Caroline's step sequence. Fantastick.

I was happy to see that she was faster in the first two-thirds of her program. The judges gave her too low PCS.

I want to review the other ladies now.

Perhaps you only saw the last third of Caroline's program like I did? She's at least a good basic skater.

In terms of basics, I think Caroline is mediocre to average, especially considering the level she's skating at. In this competition alone, Rochette, Kostner, Vähämaa and Takeda are just some of the skaters who have better skating skills that Caroline (not to say Caroline doesn't have her strengths, because she does). I think her lack of speed and ice coverage was also particularly noticeable because she skated after Joannie, who was very fast and had great ice coverage. Even though Caroline's spiral positions were fabulous and better than Joanie's, Rochette had a much ice coverage and speed during them.

Joannie: Rightfully in first place. Beautiful lutz and axel. This is the best program I've seen from her in awhile, but that being said, I still don't think her presentation is anything to crow about. Maybe I have a problem with the music, since I can't appreciate "Summertime" unless it's sung. :p Home advantage obviously contributed to her overscore - it seems iffy to me that her SP score isn't too far off from Yu-Na's at SA even considering that Joannie had a smaller error.

Carolina: Poor girl. Not the kind of performance you'd expect from the most recent silver medallist at Worlds. The 3T looked UR and those two falls just came from nowhere. Other than that I thought she looked sharp and crisp, and I much preferred her presentation to Joannie's. Her footwork was fab and I appreciated the unique spiral, even though she didn't perform it particularly well. Another random thing I noticed is that she looked so tall at this competition.

I also have to give a shout-out to dear Alissa, who did a spiral variation I've always dreamed of: standard split position into a forward Charlotte. She's lovely.
