Ladies' SP

Wowowowow Mirai! :D I was SO thrilled to see her make the final group by the skin of her teeth, and to skate last...that's such an impressive accomplishment for her, when you think of where she was just months ago. I don't know how she'll finish; I really doubt she'll medal. But I just hope she skates clean and makes the world fall in love with her, and sets her journey to Sochi off on the absoloute best foot possible. :D

I was in tears for Joannie; what a brave, brave woman. Everyone was predicting that she'd fall apart here, but somehow she dug deep inside herself and skated so beautifully. Her mother is so proud of her; I know it. Joannie deserved her scores and I hope that that moment she was able to have out there on the rink today brought her some happiness and comfort in her grief.

I really don't know how the long program will go as far as Joannie is concerned. She was able to do something amazing tonight, but I can only wonder what might happen two nights from now, when some of the emotional peak has worn off. I'm scared that she won't be able to match what she did tonight and will not be able to keep herself together for a much longer, much more demanding program. But hey. If anyone can do it, Joannie can. I'll be rooting for her. :)

Very nice job by the other top 6 skaters, with Miki being probably the least spectacular of them all. I was looking to her to be the dark horse for the OGM, but I'd say that's gone now. She'll be fighting for a bronze medal with Joannie unless she completely implodes.

The US girls did themselves proud today. I don't see either of them on the podium unless A) Miki and Joannie fall completely apart and B) They skate absolutely LIGHTS out with no downgrades; no errors. Of the two girls, I'd say Rachel has the best chance of pulling of an upset since she is very much a tremendous long program skater. Mirai probably won't be able to get through her program without at least one downgrade.

Anyway, Thursday night should be fun! :D

I am a Korean who lives in America and can speak fairly fluent Japanese, and it is very amusing to see TOTALLY different reactions to the scores from Korean and Japanese Internet boards. Basically, they are:

Korea - *** Mao was overscored! She is super slow and that program is totally empty, no choreography at all. Of course she has to be able to "interpret" the program, because she's been skating it two years in a row as a total recycle. 3A? Ha, that jump isn't worth as much as Yuna's 3-3, so of course she can't expect to beat Yuna with just that jump. The point difference should have been bigger than merely 5 points. All Mao did today was skate clean, nothing more than that.

Japan - *** *** *** *** *** (they are clearly more mad...) Granted that Yuna did well, but there shouldn't be 5 point difference between the two! Mao has 3A! That jump is difficult! Skaters should get credit for doing difficult elements!

Well, more than a few Japanese have more outrageous opinions that include Yuna buying off the entire judging panel with her sponsorship money, but I don't want to go there. I actually think both are correct, which is the most amusing part. (Now if only they will listen to each other... but of course this is Olympics and we are talking about Korea and Japan here.) Hearing opinions from both sides after actually watching the programs convinced me that judging, at least for these two skaters, was pretty fair! They are both mad, so something must have been done correctly. :)

The American ladies did better then I expected, I personally wish it would of been Sasha and Ashley here though. And my head would of exploded if Michelle had came back and her and Sasha were the team :)

Mine would, too. :D

I think the biggest thing is for Miari and Rachel get the international expercience so we can get back are three spots at worlds (if they do what they need to do at worlds)

From Protocols
Top Ten Ladies in GOE :

1 Kim 9.80
2 Rochette 7.80
3 Asada 7.10
4 Nagasu 5.20
5 Lepisto 4.78
6 Lee 2.82
7 Ando 2.70
8 Gedev. 2.70
9 Makarova 2.56
10 Flatt 2.50

Wow look at Cheltzei Lee. Great for her.. This is where they killed Ando, and Flatt too.

ITA about Cheltzie. Her jumps were fierce! She will be a force in the future... just turned 16!! She's one of the 'big' jumpers - they are so huge that they either work or they don't. So happy for her that they did tnoight.

I'm not loving Joannie's start order - right after Mao and right near the end. I hope her coach can help keep her calm and focused during the half hour between warm up and her skate. So proud of her.

I'm currently watching the coverage in Korea, and they're showing Yu-Na Kim's SP for the fourth time (one time was with the American commentary with Korean subtitles). And they showed Mao Asada's program three times. Anyhow, they both skated great, so kudos to them!... Okay, they're now showing Rochette's program for the second time now, too.

Oh, and about the whole "Queen Yu-Na" phenomenon thing, I've actually never heard her referred as that in Korea. Rather, I've heard "the country's little sister" and "the pride of Korea." And I'd agree that she's definitely the hottest celebrity in Korea now, and I see her in TV ads more than anybody else, but to add some perspective, people don't think of her as the Pope or a Nobel Prize winner or anything like that. A previous poster said that he/she found it puzzling that the most revered person in a country was an ice skater, so I wanted to clear that up. She's kind of like Lady Gaga in the U.S. X 10 (maybe 20).

You can see similar atmosphere at this forum as well, just the level of expression is different.. lol Btw I don't think Korean Skating Fed can afford to buy entire judging panel since they can't even build their own figure skating rink lol

You don't have to import those non-senses here and create another fuss.

If you just look at ISU sponsors, you can easily tell who is most likely to benefit from such a thing, if it really happens.

Not so much the point to win a medal as it is about her finishing well and as high as possible. Her pcs will get a boost by skating in last group, especially if she performs with a little more spark.

I agree. Finally they will realize what category Mirai really belongs to ;) but I just want her to skate well and have fun ... and not think about the scores if she possibly can. She's 16 and that the Olympics... She should just be reveling.

I don't love Rachael's skating and I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't like Alena's SP. But I have to admit they performed their butts off...

But kostner being so high on PCS...:disagree:

Since someone has posted something about hoping that Yuna bomb the LP, among others, and considering the fact that this thread has already gone to 83 pages, I think you are too late about not making fuss. I don't think anyone has the right to tell me what to post unless I insult someone, which I don't think I did. As someone already pointed out - there isn't one thing that I posted that hasn't been said on this board. I won't tell you what to post, so do me a favor and do likewise.

i'm torn about yuna. some things i love so much ( jumps, flow, 'it' quality, specialness)...but some things(spins) don't look so great. i'm confused. joannie was heartbreakingly beautiful tonight...hope she medals. mirai and rachel should be proud; but i don't get mirai's low pcs's.did they deduct for the nose bleed??

I am so happy for Mirai! I know she will get much better PCS in LP because she is in the final flight! I can't wait!! and Thanks Panasonic for sponsoring Mirai and her family! I will buy a Panasonic TV when I buy a new tv!!

I love Mirai and Joannie's program the best tonight. Especially Joannie!

Does anyone know how a skater's routine for the "unfactored score" for program components is determined?

Also, Asada got a +0.20 goe on her flip while Rochette got a +1.6 and Yu Na got a +1.2. Tell me the difference between the execution?

Transition wise between Mao and Yu Na. I didn't see transition in either combo, but they both had them for single 3 and double axle jumps.

I can certainly give Yu Na more credit for her 3/3 especially with the flow and equal height she appears to achieve on the 3t but +2.00 versus +0.60 on a 3a? I'm just not getting why the goe is so low on Asada's combo except for maybe slow flow after the ending of the comb.

It didn't seem to help Johnny much, but hopefully Mirai will fare better. She deserves a fair score for her effort, I don't care how old she is. Tara Lipinski was what, 15 or 16 when she won gold? So tired of hearing about our US ladies being "teenagers" on NBC, as if that makes them lesser competitors.

Looking at the list of skaters and scores, it seems Mirai got killed on PCS. Not getting it. She is very polished IMO, with some of the best spins out there. Fast, good positions. Hmmmmm.

I think she would have gotten higher PCS had she skated later. Alena got higher PCS with that sloppy skate. Had Mirai skated later they would have seen her quality vs the established skaters. I would expect them to rise in the FP (and Worlds).
