Let’s dance 80’s! New Rhythm Dance article

i think it is ice danceable since it would be paired with something else... but is completely uninteresting :) so i don't think anyone would use it

Oh I agree, I didn't say I liked the "tune". I said it was quintessential 80s. I would like to see someone try it, complete with Miami Vice outfits

If we are going for my favorite 80s TV theme music that I loved as music (and from a far better show, one I adored back in the day)

the actual intro from the pilot, including the theme song:

This year, when I've been around coaches and chorographers, most of whom are Gen X/Boomer, but some Gen Y as well, none have been outwardly in a crisis over this decade theme. And, the ones who are not English-first speakers, but other languages in Western countries (think Romance languages) - they are also having fun with the theme. Also, most major ice dancing music editors have quite a bit of knowledge about rules, picked up from working with coaches. I'm not worried about many deductions happening.
All of the above!

Figuring out music that represents the 80s, come on, it's not that hard. ;)

THIS is the quintessential 80s. Is it even ice danceable? I don't know. But any team that tries it will have my undying loyalty.

I'll raise you one from the soundtrack theme to songs from the soundtrack/show that are 80's.

You Belong to the City-Glenn Frey (Huge shame if a team doesn't use this ;) )
In the Air Tonight-Phil Collins

It's your youth showing :console:. It did show in Canada, and I loved it, and the theme music. I bought the complete set on DVD so I could watch it again occasionally.
I will take it :)

btw... i just noticed that your username could be an alternate spelling for
Deanna and Deschamps :) is that a coincidence ?

I think the best bet would be music that not only was released in the 1980s, but that people danced to in the 1980s.

This is the Rhythm Dance, so it needs to have strong rhythm. Preferably dance rhythm evocative of the era that the theme is meant to portray.

I will take it :)

:rofl:I'd noticed the Deanna/Diana pair-skater coincidence, but hadn't done the translation to get Deschamps=Delafield until now. :D No, this name was around a lot longer than they. I guess it's time I confessed that The Real Diana Delafield is my sister-in-law, or at least, it was her name before she married my oldest brother, and that was over 60 years ago. She always wanted to skate but never had the chance to learn. I tried persuading her to learn as an adult, but couldn't coax her onto the ice, although she's a big fan. So when I joined GS and needed a user name, I decided to give her a chance to become part of the skating community, in a manner of speaking. However, quite a few people by now have addressed me by her name and I was feeling a bit of a fraud.:slink: (Not enough to step into a phone booth, if there were still any, and emerge as myself, but enough to feel guilty.)

OT, sorry, but thanks for the opening to confess. Sort of.

So darn it, now I am going down the rabbit hole of 80's TV theme songs.

One of my favorites as a theme, although the show was pretty silly (well, it was a comedy), but very 80s

The Greatest American Hero

A show that started in the 80s, so barely makes it. ;) People made fun of it at the time, but I have rewatched in the past five years, and it was a fine show, with great acting. It also doesn't hurt that I also was thirtysomething when it was airing. ;)

thirtysomething

Not that anyone is ever going to skate to these....

Have to admit, apart from "Miami Vice", I haven't heard tell of any of the TV shows whose theme tunes have been suggested overnight. (They mustn't have made it across the Atlantic).

I'm really annoyed that "Dallas" started in 1978. Because it's theme tune would make an epic programme!

For the past couple of months, I've been watching "Highway To Heaven". To be honest, I think it would make a boring skating programme. But, I thought I would throw it in. Here is the full-length version of the tune:

Daniel Caine - "Highway To Heaven"

The other 80's series that I am watching at the moment (well, I was until the channel changed it's schedules at the start of this month, dropping it mid-series!) has a great theme, but I'm not sure it would translate into an Ice Dance programme:

Mark Snow - "Crazy Like A Fox"

Before them, I was watching this. Loved the programme (and the music!), even though I don't really like David Hasselhoff. There are so many full-length versions on YouTube that just don't quite sound right that I have decided to just link to the opening titles:

Stuart Phillips - "Knight Rider"

From cars to helicoptors. This is what was on Legend TV before they started showing "Knight Rider". I loved this series, but they destroyed it when they changed the cast and, well, everything else for Series 4. This is another tune that has lots of full-length versions on YouTube that don't quite sound right so, again, I am just linking to the opening titles (This wasn't the version of the titles that I wanted, but at least it is from Series 1. Most of the videos of the titles on YouTube are from Series 2 or 3):

Sylvester Levay - "Airwolf"

Nah, I don't think either of these would make good skating programmes. Apart from anything else, how do you interpret a car or a helicoptor?!

I really didn't intend this to be so weighted towards American programmes. But, I haven't actually watched much British TV from the 80's.

One British series that started in the 80's that I did watch (albeit not from the start) was "The Bill". But, I don't really like the original version of the theme tune (Charlie Morgan and Andy Pask - "Overkill") used from 1983 to 1987. My favourite was the version used from 1988 to 1997. But, it would be more associated with the 90's than the 80's.

Because I haven't watched it, I am not sure when exactly it is set. But, I have to include "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet". The closing theme is one of those songs that has become iconic. Honestly, I don't think it would be suitable for an Ice Dance programme. But I do think the opening theme would:

Joe Fagin - "Breakin' Away" (Opening Theme)
Joe Fagin - "That's Living Alright" (Closing Theme)

Another series I haven't watched, but which has an iconic theme tune, is BBC soap "EastEnders":

Simon May - "EastEnders"

And if you don't want an instrumental, here is a version with vocals provided by one of the original cast members:

Anita Dobson - "Anyone Can Fall In Love"

Sorry, Anita, but I prefer the instrumental version. (It would probably have made all the difference if she had been accompanied by her now husband, Brian May...) Although, I'm not sure either would be great for skating to.

I have to end with a local programme. And it has to be the music that was used as the theme for Ulster TV's iconic Friday night chat show, "Kelly", which started in September 1989. I can't find a video on YouTube which includes the theme, so here it is at the start of one of the early episodes on the NI Screen Digital Film Archive:

https://digitalfilmarchive.net/media/kelly-alex-higgins-leo-sayer-su-3057

But, somehow, I have a feeling that the music is a wee bit older than the 1980's... :p

OK, I think that's enough for now.

It was a bit of a waste of time making this post out, because I have linked to lots of tunes but, out of all of them, I only think one would be suitable for skating to! :drama:

Ach, for goodness sake! How could I forget about "V"?! Especially since I can actually imagine the music being skated to! :drama:

The music used in the opening titles of the long series would make a great programme:

Dennis McCarthy - "Main Title" (from "V: The Series")

In addition, there are playlists of music from all three 80's series on their repective composers' YouTube topic channels:

Joe Harnell - "V (Music from the Television Miniseries Mini-Series)"

Dennis McCarthy - "V: The Final Battle (Music From the Television Mini-Series)"

Dennis McCarthy - "V: The Series (Music From The Television Series)"

So, if anybody wants to make a "V" medley, there are lots of pieces to choose from!

The show Cops with its theme "Bad Boys" started In March 1989! You could pair that with Miami Vice. :dance3:

I never saw one episode of Cops and even I know "Whatcha gonna do when they come for you"

Paired with Jan Hammer electric drums: now someone needs to do this.

Never heard of the show "Cops" before, but I have known that song for as long as I can remember!

Inner Circle - "Bad Boys"

Oh, I would love to see how it would be interpreted!

Just had a thought. Was "V" set in the present (i.e. the 1980's), or was it set some time in the future? Because if it was the future, it may not meet the requirements of the rules.

The places on Earth didn't look in any way futuristic to me. Which makes me think it was set in the present. But, it could have been set in the near future, say 10 or 20 years. So, it could be an iffy enough choice.

mustache are mandatory for this theme  and hawaiian shirts of course

Believe it or not, this was an advert for a real event! But, it was back in November 2014. So, we've missed it. 😞

The other advert I saw for it has more details. And it mentions 26 inch pizzas. I wonder if they have 🍍 pineapple on it... 🤔
