Let’s dance 80’s! New Rhythm Dance article

how do we feel about Grace Jones? if anyone picks her music i hope they also remember she had a very specific aesthetic

Love her! She is opening for Duran Duran in NYC in September. I have never seen her live before. A Grace Jones program would be amazing.

I also saw The Cure this past week, great concert. I just can't see anyone skating to them. Maybe ShaeLynn could come up with a medley like she did with Depeche Mode for Nic Nadeau.

The Glastonbury Festival was on the TV while I was eating my tea, and for most of it Blondie were on. And, although I have to admit that I couldn't actually hear Debbie's vocals over the music, it started me thinking "Oh, I would love to see some Blondie programmes this season".

But, I got a shock there now when I looked up their discography, and found that they released hardly any singles during the 80's. They are one of the bands I always associated with the 80's. But all their big hits were released before 1981. And they then didn't release anything new between 1982 and 1999. Mind you, some of their big hits were re-released during that hiatus. So, that may be what was confusing me.

There were only a couple of songs that they played that I didn't know. And one of them was one of the songs that was released in 1981. So, I just listened to the original recording of it, and it might work:

Blondie - "Rapture"

Personally, it wouldn't be my choice. I much prefer their earlier material.

However, I just thought to look up Debbie herself, and it turns out that she was releasing lots of solo singles for the rest of the 80's, and into the 90's. I have to admit, apart from one, I don't recognise the titles, and I don't have time to listen to them all now.

So, here is the song that I do recognise:

Debbie Harry - "French Kissing In The USA"

Don't worry, I realise that the lyrics mean that it wouldn't be appropriate.

Either side of Blondie, the BBC showed Cat Stevens. Now, he was actually one of the first artists whose discography I looked up when I found out about the 80's theme. Because my head was already going through songs of his that I thought would be good for Ice Dancing. But, unfortunately, all of the songs I was thinking of were from earlier. He didn't actually release anything during the 80's, or the 90's for that matter.

Typical! :rolleye:

But, although Angelina and Ilia can't do it as their Short this season, I would love to see them or one of their Singles team-mates do a Cat Stevens programme at some stage. It would be a really nice touch, given that his Dad was Cypriot.

Incidentally, Cat Stevens' Mum was Swedish, so what I just said goes for the Swedish skaters as well.

Please, please, PLEASE not the Hill Street Blues theme. I am forever scarred by the use of it in my youth by a young lad whose skating skills were as lumpy as his interpretation. And I heard it sooooooooooo many times.
But for me it brings back so many good skating memories. While that show was running, my pairs partner and I used the theme for cool-down music. Big lazy swing rolls around the rink, a few chasses here and there. My mind's eye sees the rink we used that decade. Icy nostalgia!

I have a terrible memory, but have fond memories of skating at a now defunct rink in the burbs to Mr. L's stroking class, with Billy Ocean playing (Caribbean Queen). So an appropriate memory for this thread.

the original insted of creepy covers please

Hey, the original was creepy too! Sting has talked about its popularity for weddings and how... odd that is.

(Can I just say that this thread made me go into my 80's playlists, and I have now had that damned Mexican Radio going round and round and round and round in my head for days...)

"I wish I was in....Tiajuana eating bbq'd igauna......"🎵

seems like some are nostalgic of their 80s tv shows...
I've been trying to think of 1980s film scores that could be used, but am not coming up with much besides Flashdance and Footloose. I didn't get to see too many films in those years, so there may be some whose titles I recognize but whose scores I don't know. Beaches had songs that would suit ice dancers, but most were covers of much older songs, some going back to the 40s.

My partner and I once used a section from the score of The Killing Fields that was great for pairs if you wanted to be dramatic, but wouldn't do at all for dance. No rhythm. And definitely not evocative of parties or clubs from that decade!

Edit: Tried to add the URL for a condensed medley from The Killing Fields, tested it, and something came up in German saying "that video is not available anymore". Which was odd considering I'd just played it two minutes before.

Purple Rain is an 80s film and essentially one long soundtrack and score ;) although I am hearing now that Prince is not original enough.

The theme to Beverly Hills Cop is (ice) danceable, as it is rhythmic and has a definite beat, but personally it makes my ears bleed. :)

You – members of Golden Skate Forum are a great example of how much creative and original brainstorming exercise can be. Thank you for that!

What worries me is that somebody is going to get caught out, using a song that they do not realise is a cover. (Hey, there are plenty of songs that I didn't realise were covers until somebody pointed it ot on here). Imagine the drama if another skater's team put in a protest, and got them disqualified because of the music.

Just to clarify, you get a deduction for music (similar to violating rhythm requirements for PD in the old days), not disqualification. Even in old days especially at lower levels judges disagreed what was a blues and not for example.

In both 2007/2008 and 2009/2010 season Original Dance was on theme Folk / Country dance.

Meryl Davis & Charlie White’s Original Dance in 2009/10 season had Indian theme, but music was taken from Bollywood movies – it had modern arrangement. Nobody minded that music was not typical Indian folk music.

Christina & William Beier’s Original Dance in 2007/08 season was called Martial Arts Combat, using music from Japanese musician Kitaro and others. One song looked like Kodo Drums. Martial arts are not folk dance at all…and martial arts choreography is no way folk choreography.

…As to martial arts and dance combination – there is Capoeira in Brazil, but I don’t believe it is possible to compose an ice dance program from that dance style (if the choreography should really be realistic).

As I know nobody got deduction.

Hi, this year to my knowledge they will strictly require music to depict the 80s. I'm sure they will publish examples. If the film was released in 80s, but set in a different year then it wouldn't be depicting the 80s, and hence subject to potential music violation. Already there have been some disagreements over what "depicts" the 80s, so I assume it won't be slam dunk in some cases - for example, where 80s style and genre music was used in a film that might be set in a different era (I think dirty dancing for example would be up for debate)

Also, why are The Cure not skateable? The Lovecats totally is.
