Mai Mihara

btw, after looking at pictures, i really love the details on her dress and the back of it, i think its better than the one she wore during ice show  #1 , #2, why ponytail though :palmf:
The dress looks good on her! And I don't even mind the ponytail. I thought it was actually a better choice than the standard Neat Little Ice Princess Bun you often see and it didn't look like the Perky Junior Ponytail she had last season. I think it was the dress colour that made it work (for me): the dress made her hair look extra black. I approve!

Well done and congrats to Mai for her silver :luv17:

I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the program. For me, the music doesn't seem to have the potential to create an 'Olympic moment', and the chorus-y bit during the step sequence is a bit jarring. I wish they'd gone for something with a stronger climax. IMO the ponytail has to go. It's okay for the short but makes her look younger than her age here. I'm also not a huge fan of the dress - I think I prefer long sleeves for her because they lengthen her arms? I guess I'm being nitpicky because the fight for an Olympic spot is going to be brutal :(

I do like the first half and how it highlights her seemingly effortless flow and speed on the ice, though  She should be so proud of how well she skated and how much she's improved her expression in such a short period of time.

Edited: to add pics of Mai at the medal ceremony.

I like more her short program. Today I felt she was tired, so I guess the LP will grow a lot...
However I want to see the protocols because IMO she was underscored, maybe the judges gave her another edge call :palmf:

i actually quite like the music during stsq, she can be more free and expressive, but it is a good vehicle, also i like her costume too  but i agree about ponytail, i wonder why she is so insistent about it  still waiting for protocols, with the mistakes Kaetlyn made i wonder how thegap is so wide, egde call and probably ur on 3T at her 2nd 3-3, and curious about her PCS

I don't understand the wide point gap either... but judges seem to love Kaetlyn. It bothers me, but I think Mai's marks will improve.

I want that hair done differently too... and i wish the neckline was slightly different rather than plain scoop like that. I think this program will really grow. Some moves could be more finished off, held, but I still like it very much. Her jumps, flow... just lovely. Easily my favourite.

Excellent recovery, too, as her layout is usually 3Lz+3T, 2A+3T, and 3Lz+2T+2Lo but she had to change it to 2 3Lz+3T and 2A+2T+2Lo. Not anyone can spontaneously recover a popped 3T and add it back at the end of a 3Lz. This program is so calming and serene, great contrast to her fiery SP. Her smoothness on the ice is so amazing!

If the judges consistently call her flip edge this season while not even bothering to give out !s to the suspicious lutzes of our top ladies I'm gonna be mad.

so this is the 1st competition she ever got e on her flip, twice  she got few e for her lutz when she was junior but never for her flip, got some ! though, last time being at Nebelhorn Trophy last season, and her 3-3 in 2nd half was called clean with higher GOE than 1st half one, so well done i guess :agree::laugh:
fun fact, no e or ! calls were given on lutz for ladies  also she has good GOEs on her non-jump elements and also got higher PCS than she got at Worlds which is a plus

edit: some pictured from Elizabet's instagram, they are so cute!!
#1 , #2

I liked Mai's performances a lot. She has more flow and grace in her skating than last year and I can feel she has more connection in expressing the music. I like the way her long pony tail flows with her fluid motions as she skates. I learned a long time ago that there is a lot of injustice in scoring in figure skating just as there was here, in edge calls and PCS for example. I also realize that the qualities I want to see are often not rewarded by judges. if Mai had lost by a few points it would have been more believable and more defensible, though I along with many others honestly thought she was the best, but "losing" by almost 20 points when she skated cleaner is too absurd to believe and causes the scoring to lose all legitimacy in my opinion.

I thought Kaetlyn easily deserved her win overall cause her SP is the bomb dot com but yeah her winning the FS with that kind of margin over Mai had shades of Chan vs Takahashi at 2012 worlds...

is Mai really getting wrong edge in her 3F now? isn't her lutz is still not true lutz? i mean in the Worlds 2017 her lutz still ! even though it didn't get called. her flip in SP that she performed in DOI 2017 still inside edge... i remember her getting ! on 3F in gensan summer cup though... if her 3F is really 3Fe it will hurt her score by quite a lot tbh, usual 3F from her could get almost 7 points if in bonus mark, while 3Fe she'll only get 3-4 points :(

Mai's run through of her LP, many thanks to kiches!! :thank:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x61ybns

judging by this video, seems like her layout is 3Lz3T 2A / 3F 2A3T 3Lo 3Lz 3S2T2Lo, so this means she changed it during competition quite a bit, interesting to see 3 jump combo as the last one since it would be safer to add it to 3Lz (maybe she actually planned it this way but another skater was on her way during run through so she added it to 3S, video didnt capture it)

I just came here to say that the calls of her flips are BS to me. Also really like her free i think it suits her very well and it is very nicely choreographed and packaged.
The SP is a bit of a problem imo because her moves are just not sharp enough for that music and she doesn't really have the "bravado" that it requires. Obviously she still has time to improve but i am a bit worried it wasn't the best suit for her at this point.

Her flip is ok. Lutz technique is a little weird, but I'd give it a ! at best. Her wrong edge calls at Canadian Nationals was a clear injustice (and Osmond's flutz wasn't even called).

I would love it if Mai competed at Canadian Nationals!!!!!

.... I"m just kidding you, I know you meant ACI, but I couldn't resist.

After some difficulties with dailymotion flagging my videos for copyright (I'm guess both Mai's SP and FS have since all my videos of her were flagged), here are some fancam videos I took of Mai at Autumn Classic last weekend.

20170921 ACI Mai Mihara Warm-Up
20170921 ACI Mai Mihara SP Run-Through
20170922 ACI Mai Mihara FS Run-Through
20170923 ACI Mai Mihara FS Run-Through

My general thoughts on Mai is that she has much better programs this season, but she still needs time to grow into them. I think once she's a bit more comfortable we'll see better commitment to the music and movement of the choreography, particularly in the SP (love the long sleeved dress, but I think the ponytail has got to go in both programs). Her free skate music is a nice compliment to her effortless speed and flow across the ice, her dress is very pretty as well. Overall I'm looking forward to her progress this season!

thank you so much for sharing the videos and your experience about seeing her live kiches!! :thank: i really appreciate when skaters do full run-through, cause i feel like it prepares them better for actual performance (i dont remember seeing her out of breath, same goes for Satoko as well), i might be totally wrong though

Mai Mihara came back to Japan on October 28, she was working on LP with David Wilson in Toronto after ACI. Wilson said to her, "You have to have hands that can tell a story.", "You have to express by only your hands that can tell a story". She said the result of other skaters in Challenger Series were stimulating, and that she couldn't imagine easily herself to be in Olympic team with the result of ACI. But if she practices everyday the refined choreography she had brushed up in Toronto, she thinks that the result will follow.

Good luck, Mai!!

thank you yude!!:luv17:
i hope she wont feel disappointed and use this as motivation, you can do it Mai :yahoo:
