Major TV Networks will not renew their contracts

CTV and TSN will not renew their international skating contract. I assume 'international skating' means all skating events sanctioned by the ISU. They have decided to let the current contract expire but buy a new one focusing on 'Canadian' events. The reason is poor rating.

Here is the article,

waymoresports.thestar.com...ureSkating

What a HUGE blow to Skate Canada. No skating on t.v means no sponsors and so on...

TV Networks not to renew contracts

The ISU needs money...lots of it. They will look to another network(s) to air figure skating. The other networks are in an excellent position to insist that an ethics clause be included in their contract with the ISU the way John Hancock Financial Services did with the USOC. As everyone knows, John Hancock got results! The other networks in Canada (I am an American so I do not know what other networks exist in Canada), if there are any, will no doubt be approached by the ISU as the ISU desperately needs the money that North American TV broadcasting brings to them. This is the time to write to the other networks and urge them to include that ethics clause in any contract they enter into with the ISU. If ALL the networks are insisting on ethics clauses, the ISU will have no place to go and will have to accept the ethics clause in their contract in order to get any money. Think about it...the networks could help to solve this big problem.

Re: TV Networks not to renew contracts

I think CBC will jump on this and try to get the contact

Re: TV Networks not to renew contracts

we will find out eventually who will pick up these 'international skating' events. The only problem with CBC is that we have to share airtime with hockey.

At least I hope that CTV keeps nationals.

Re: TV Networks not to renew contracts

I'm willing to bet CTV will air the 2004 Canadian nationals.
I hope CTV/TSN decide to renew their contract with the ISU, because I hate listening to the commentators at CBC, let's just say that I would rather listen to Dick and Peggy talk about how perfect Sarah's lutz is, than listen to folks at CBC.

This is where we need a skating channel...........42

worlds

Since I can get CBC and not CTV on my cable package in northwest Ohio, I really hope CBC gets the worlds and other international rights back. I like Underhill and Martini as commentators (they aren't usually downright mean like Dick and Peggy unless its Surya (whose skating I enjoy a lot ) skating.

TV

The ABC contract comes up for renewal next year.

It is not coincidental that the WSF was started this year, and that Dick Button is one of the principals. Perhaps Uncle Dickie will be able to do for skating juding what the booing at Cinquanta did not accomplish.

I hope so.
