Mao Asada plans comeback

Whoa if true!

Next season should be interesting,. It may work out to become a competition of PCS vs TES that hopefully bring up some improvements to how PCS are scored. Go veterans!
It will also be interesting to see whether the ascension of Hanyu factor representing the same country may have any impact on their scores.

let mao decide whatever she wants and people should respect it..

i for one looking forward to see her. just because i want some elegant skating and not some jumping contest..

I really don't get the whole "let the new generation have their turn" and "these older skaters are being selfish for coming back" idea. If these new skaters really want to reach the highest level in the sport, then they should see the comebacks of these past champions as an opportunity for motivation and inspiration. Unlike some , I was so glad that Ashley Wagner decided to continue and put up a fight because this will just make both Gracie and Polina try to be better. If Gracie or Polina can't even handle a rivalry with Ashley, how much more with far superior skaters?

If Mao comes back and in competitive form, this could pressure Liza, for one, to work on her skating skills and not just rely on her jumps. Just having a Mao, a Patrick Chan, or Plushenko in the mix is going to keep everyone else on their toes. For me, that is a good thing for both the sport and its fans.

I see no evidence of that. Her 3Flip+3Loop has constantly been downgraded but the one season she actually did 3Flip+3Toe with correct technique, 2007-2008, it was ratified at almost every competition. For some unknown reason she simply never did 3Flip+3Toe again after that season.
Her 3F-3Lo was ratified pretty often prior to the 2008-09 season, it was only later that the judges started downgrading everything (and I'm pretty sure you disagreed with plenty of their calls). Her 3F-3T was ratified with +GOE only once, at Worlds - the GPF one wasn't very good and could easily have been called short. The 4CC combo was downgraded and I don't remember how it looked at Nationals but it wasn't great. This was the same season where she landed a good, rotated 3F-3Lo at least 6 times. Things might have changed since then but I always assumed that for her, 3F-3Lo is better. Though maybe 3Loop-3Loop would be a good alternative as she's practiced it before.

I agree with this. I don't understand the whole "let new skatera have their turn". Skating is a sport, and in a competition the best should representing at competitions. If the best are the seasoned skaters, they should go, if the best are newer competitors, then they should go. It's not about some vague "fairness", it's about who is the best and if a skater wants to keep pushing to be the best then that is a good thing for the sport. Additionally, it does serve as motivation for the younger skaters to be well rounded competitors and not just rely on jumping skills.

Personally, I would much rather watch a skater like Mao than some variation of a teenage "sensation" Tara/Kimmie/Sarah/Polina. That isn't to say these aren't or were not great skaters. But I think there is a quality and maturity in a seasoned skater that can't be easily duplicated in a 15 year old.

Either way, I hope whatever Mao decides she does what she really wants to do.

While I get that you guys are excited, she could well just announced that she is retiring. So lets hold of our horses... should we? :)

:agree:

Should we also speculate on the possible impact of the success of the Russian ladies on the scores of the comebacking Evgeny Plushenko? Personally, even at the risk of being called naive, I hope all will be judged based on what they actually put out there on the ice.

It is not negative. It would be awesome to see these other skaters comeback I do admit I like to see fairness and Mao has a lot of uber fans on this website but I did not see the same excitement for Korpi or Chan and they deserve the same welcome greetings too. It is just Miyara and co were developing. and it is the truth that skating is a selfish sport as many things are.

Well you know it wasn´t like we didn´t have a long discussion on Patrick and if he was going to be competitive or not. And then we discussed a lot about his very "un polite" comments about his competition...and then the conversion went ugly.

Korpi, even when she is a beautiful skater, doesn´t have the same winning record as Mao, so is normal that she didn´t got the same attention.

If Mao starts throwing shade at current skaters in her comeback press conference I would think there would be a lot of side eye-ing and snark going her way too from this forum. But I just can't imagine her doing that. The reason why Mao is so beloved and appreciated is that she has remained gracious in both wins and losses.

The amount of people who are excited about a specific skaters "comeback" is in direct correlation with how popular the skater is. It is what it is, you can't force people to like other skaters. :confused2:

That would be so great if it really happened.

I love Mao! So excited to hear this. Very interested to see what will happen if she does compete on the GP with Liza, Elena, Satoko, Ashley, and Gracie. All 5 girls had an incredible season- so it will be interesting to see what goes down!
And don't forget that Lipnitskaya may come back stronger next season, Sotnikova is returning too, and Medvedeva is going senior. On the other hand, Radionova could start having some problems because of growth.

The best new that I can hear!!!! :cheer: Wish so much to see her live in GPF!!!:drama:

I completely agree!!!
Haha! Or, if she wants to go "safer" to avoid calls, she could try 3axel, 2axel/3toe, 3flip (21.2 points), as her 2axel/3toe was quite solid in the Sochi season. I just don't see her adding 3toe to her triples.

3axel, 3loop/3loop, 3flip: 24 points
3axel, 2axel/3toe, 3flip: 21.2 points
2 axel, 3flip/2loop, 3 loop: 15.5 points ---- Most realistic and as long as I can see her skate in top form I'll be thrilled!!
*Not taking into account the bonus points

Tuktamysheva's 3axel, 3lutz, 3toe/3toe gives her 22 points. But her non axel jumps will likely receive higher GOEs (and rightly so), although the battle of 3axel GOE will be so exciting!!!

Sorry clearly I'm bored in the southern hemisphere winter here and got carried away.

I would love to see her compete next season. Competitive figure skating is simply better with her.
But I don't think she'll have a reliable 3-3, but she won't need it if she maxes out her PCS. We shouldn't forget that she's still got the SP world record without a 3-3.

I am SOOOO happy that I got an all-event ticket for the next Worlds! I may be able to see one of my fave girl live! (So sad I won't get to see Yuna competing again *tears tears tears*)

I am still making a list of skaters I want to buy and throw gifts to - now I need to add one more entry into my shopping list but I'm happy with it!
