Maria Sotskova

Congratulations to Maria for making it to GPF!! Judges rewarded her consistency with the PCS increase. It's not so easy to perform at this level among such skaters. I hope she will never lose her nerves of steel!

It seems many people watched her for the first time this season and she got many positive comments on this forum! It's amazing to see that. And this is just the beginning of her senior career. Hope she will improve more with each experience.

Yea, especially since Buyanova's skaters aren't really known for their consistency. But her skating skills and spins have improved this season, and she didn't lose her jumps!
She has been one of my favourite skaters since 2013-14 JGPF. Many of her past programs - Pina, Winter, Black Magic Woman were so distinctive. She's very different from the "typical" Russian skater, from her height to her costumes.
I do wish she had better programs this season for her senior debut. Something like Black Magic Woman SP and either Schnittke program for FS. It might lessen the complaints that she is boring.

She grew up by 10-12 centimeters. And how she handle with her new body - it's amazing.

I think she said she didn't grow that much this summer (but rather last summer?) It's still very impressive that she kept her jumps.
It might be a stamina issue? Most of her URs come in the second half. That first 3Lz is never a problem but the second 3Lz always is.

Personally, I don't think the 3F< call is very fair considering the calls for other skaters.

Press from yesterday:

Maria Sotskova "upset by low scores, but does not intend to lose heart"

Russian figure skater Maria Sotskova commented on his performance in the short program at the Grand Prix finals (6th place).

"I am pleased with your rental, and the coaches noted that today I skated with good speed, and the program looked decent. I give a low score, of course, upset, but does not intend to lose heart - tomorrow hire any program.

I do not care what it is final - the junior or an adult. My task is to enjoy skiing, and give it to the audience. With this attitude I came here and went - not to worry, skate clean, to fight for each element while riding nicely "- Sotskova said.

I thought she skated with good speed yesterday as well so glad to hear it from her coaches :hap85: And her PCS is still going up so the judges believe in her. Now the flip call is a little  but whatever. I hope she slays today and get a SB :hap10:

It could very well be stamina. I think nerves can do it too. Her jumps look better outside of competition and she said at NHK that she doesn't under-rotate in her run through but sometimes in competition. Hopefully she focus on rotating today, the 3rd Russian spot is still very much open. Then they can go home and figure out the under-rotations because it needs to be addressed especially Lutz #2 (it always get hit with a <).

A new SB :yahoo: What a fighter!

GPF LP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Pg7mHIA31A

ETA: only 2 under-rotations (3f<+1lo+3s<). No < on the 2nd lutz :yes2:

Congratulations to Maria for posting a new SB score! Her skating looks faster and stronger comparing to the beginning of the season. Her artistry is well recieved by the audience and judges. So happy for the second triple lutz finally worked! All she needs to do now is being sure that those jumps are rotated. But I have to add that I watched her SP again and that flip looked perfectly rotated to me.

Anyway, it was a very nice start to the season for Maria! She did achieve more than enough to make me happy. I hope she will be skating like this consistently. I would be very happy if she makes it to the Russian team for Euros.

I wonder what could have happened if Maria moved to Seniors last season with Evgenia. She was so consistent, and she was pretty much losing only to Tsurskaya. (And with Tsurskaya's insane jump quality - Evgenia would probably lose as well)

I think she would have had a better chance of establishing herself as a top senior together with Evgenia then. They both started their senior debut season at Nepala, with similar PCS scores. Yes Evgenia backloads and tanos, but Maria can do a proper Lz and F. This year with Russia #1 and #2 firmly established, and Evgenia's scores climbing higher with each competition, it's more difficult to breakthrough.

Nevertheless, she's making a good case for Russia #3

Nope. In the last season she was superb and amazing only at Russian Nationals. That's all. Then at Junior Nationals, YOG and JW she was in a bad shape and I still don't get why. In compare with her incredible skating at Nationals, at other competitions she was very slow and her jumps were very shaky.

I'll have to rewatch some of those competitions. I thought she skated pretty darn well in JGP/JGPF, and were her jumps worse than this year? She didn't get many UR calls iirc.
Her speed, edge work, and spins have definitely improved this year though.

But I mean in terms of building momentum, it could have been helpful. Rus Fed held her back (and Sakhanovich) because the next batch of juniors weren't as strong, excluding Tsurskaya (and Fedichkina was a nice surprise)

I understand you. :) In the begining of the last season at JGP - yes. But judges always gave her very small PCS. And I'm sure she could have bronze medal at Euro. But I don't know what happend after new year. Mistakes at Juniors Nationals, and at YOG and JW she almost walked at rink, not skated. At senior level it could be much harder for her. So all is well that ends well. :)

Ah ok, I get what you mean. Well, I'm glad switching coaches helped her with speed (and politically?). Though on a superficial level, can she please get her old fashion sense/dress designer back?

I rewatched all her skates from last year and senior nationals was definitely her best in terms of jumping and selling the programs. Her jumps were tight at times last year so yeah I think she has actually performed them better this year even with the under-rotation calls. And yes, her and Med had similar PCS when they debuted at Ondrej Nepela but Maria has a new coach and a new team behind her to work on her SS, spins and speed she wouldn't have had that last year if she had moved to Seniors. But with the coach switch she can continue to work on her SS/speed and now she just needs to work harder on getting those jumps around. But I'm sure her and her team will figure it out.

Her dress designer was and still is her mom. They like it. I'm cool with them as long as she doesn't come out wearing anything that Sotnikova used to wear. At least once I had to ask where her parents were

All good points! Just pure speculation on my part - we'll never know.

I do hope her team figure things out because she has so many good qualities. Hopefully she's building momentum for next season now.
She certainly can/does jump high enough - she just needs to clean up her landings. Or perhaps consider moving the 3F-1Lo-3S earlier? I don't know how comfortable she is with that 3Lz-3T but switching the two combinations might work. (more speculation haha)

Oh yea, I remember the interview where she said her mum helps with the dress and she loves the pink one. But IMO, it makes her look junior-ish, is somewhat generic, and the mesh doesn't match her skin tone.
Haha please just learn Sotnikova's SS and performance ability...and ignore the rest

Nothing wrong with speculation. I too speculate on if she moves this jump here maybe she can rotate it better. Mainly the 2nd lutz but she did better with it today!

Today she was breathtaking. I almost cried but I had to wait to see how her TES would turn out. So happy about the SB. And boy if she can get those jumps rotated, watch out. The potential is definitely there. With her consistency she could be challenging the top tier (i.e. the top 4 at GPF and Ashley).

 OMG yes. Can we also give her Adelina's double axel too

But considering she has an Instagram dedicated to everything pink, that pink dress isn't going ANYWHERE

Same! I was so nervous about how much the TES would drop after yesterday.
Yea...4 competitions and she made a major mistake once and that was the least important competition.

There's something so...sincere (?) about her skating that makes her a joy to watch.
