I still have high hopes that these people will test negative in time to join the bubble... I know of plenty of people who got covid while traveling and had to delay their flight a week or so, until their test came back negative to fly back to Canada... so sometimes, it's a question of a few days... there is still time... hoping the same for the Slovenian athlete.
Russian media is reporting some false positives in Beijing.

Caveat: I don't read Russian, so this is from Google Translate, and that can be unreliable.

Is this only in figure skating or the Team Canada for all sports going to Beijing? Either way, very stressful. I hope there isn´t any figure skaters involved :(
I'm pretty sure KMT mentioned in an interview that she was leaving for Beijing on Jan 29th (although I don't know if the whole figure skating team is traveling together).

all sports and members of the delegation that have arrived (246 so far) ... it could be officials, coaches etc...athletes of course, as mentioned, details will not be revealed until the covid status is confirmed... and then, only those who consent will have their names publicized.

Ok, we are going to figure out eventually if there is any figure skaters involved if they have to WD :/

If I understand this correctly, they tested positive after they arrived in Beijing? I suppose they did test themselves before departing, and only got negative results. Perhaps it got detected because of the higher threshold, or it´s incubation time. I really hope they had the mask on the whole flight, but I guess they are allowed to remove it when eating and drinking on the plane. It worries me that it´s detected after they arrive, because it could have been circulating in the air the whole flight :/ Was the flight long?

It all depends on CT values, which can naturally fluctuate within a range of people who have had COVID in recent months (not to mention variables in the tests themselves and the samples). The test they took before takeoff might have even been a lower threshold (Olympics use 35 CT, many tests are only for 30 CT, the higher the CT value the LESS contagious they are). It's hard to say.

A trans-continental flight with hundreds of people seems like a recipe for disaster if anyone highly contagious is on it... but the thinking is as long as no one is worse than 30 they figure they should be ok.

I guess we'll find out. The Canadian contingent had 5 out of 246 that had landed, which is higher than you'd like but doesn't really surprise me. We know we've had a number of outbreaks in multiple sports in the last two months, so there are certainly dozens that have CT values in the risk area.

Thank you, that is very clarifying. They did test themselves twice 96 hours before departure...

To be more precise, they had to have two PCR tests within the 96 hours before departure. Those are not the do-it-yourself rapid tests as China will not recognize those. PCR samples are gathered by a professional and processed in a lab. According to the playbook, at least one of those testing centers/labs (doing the 96-hour window testing) must be accredited by the local Chinese Embassy, the other can be a testing center/lab of one's choice. The two tests must be at least 24 hours apart.

PCR tests are pretty accurate, they are less subject to false results than the rapid tests. So if somebody had two negative tests before departing for Beijing, then showed up positive in the test done at Beijing arrival, either it's truly a false positive OR the person got infected within a short period of time before stepping on the plane, either after the original two PCR tests were done, or around the same time, before the tests could pick up the minute initial particles of virus.

I think this might also happen with some people months after recovery ('persistent shedders') due to fluctuating trace levels of residual RNA (not indicative of infectious particles though).

The Japanese skaters fly out in a little over 24 hours, and the rest of Team USA should be coming along shortly, so we're currently stuck in an agonising waiting game... I'm glad that the first round of USA flights appear to have went off without a hitch, although I do feel bad for Team Canada and Norway. I really hope that J or R aren't one of the five with the positive tests, since Feijoa pointed out how recovery can skew tests and they had COVID about a month ago. There's probably time to get the alternates out to China though. We'll see what will happen with the next few days, but hopefully the number of positive tests stays low and there are none in the bubble.

EDIT: Thank you for the document Andrea! It looks like most of the positive tests have come from stakeholders, and the athletes and team officials have a very low positive test rate. Hopefully this trend will continue.

The numbers of tests and positive cases are updated on Beijing 2022 website. Currently last update is midnight of 27th January.

I think first skaters arrived at the Olympic Village are the Czech team. Well, apart from the Chinese skaters.

That is a great resource, thank you for posting that!

Interesting that the "other stakeholders" are testing positive at a 10x higher rate than the "athletes and officials"... pretty easy to see who is following the guidelines and who is not

@norwegianfairytale
very bad news for Norway...

I know.... and they are not even in Beijing yet. The ones who still is negative plans to go on Monday - and if they get there, there is still the arrival tests to pass. I´ll give the ones who are able to start at medal at this rate.

I have to admit, I care more about the figure skaters than the ski team. Rather them than my favorite skaters :slink: All though it is sad, at least Heidi Weng and Simen Krüger have been to the Olympics before.
