Wishing her the best at Skate Canada!!
Updated the first post with Mirai's videos and result from Skate Canada. Obviously not her best outing by a mile and her lowest overall score in 3 years. I honestly think it was all mental, maybe she put pressure on herself to repeat her great result at ACI. She looked great in warm-ups, so she wasn't sick or injured.
I'm sure Mirai will learn from this and she will work on improving for NHK. Go Mirai!
I think I agree that Skate Canada just completely overwhelmed Mirai. Maybe it was that beautiful new dress or just all the hype she was given with doing so well in the Lombardia Trophy. I'm really hoping Mirai can just accept this as a minor set back but further inspire her to continue to remain fit and trained. I don't know what better psychological boost you can have than to be as physically prepared as possible.
I hope she can just put this behind her and move on. I'm sure she was terribly disappointed. I'm hoping it was just an off day for her. She just didn't seem to have the usual spring to her jumps and her normal vitality. I was there at the arena, and she just didn't seem to be her usual self to me. Her new costume was beautiful, as always.

If Goldie doesn't make strong comeback in nationals, I hope Mirai make to the worlds team!
The way this fall has been looking for most of the U.S. ladies, I have no clue what will happen for any of the medal spots at U.S. Nationals. It will be insane to watch!

Just wanted to throw some love to this page since Mirai skated at NHK! While I will admit there was a part of me that hoped she would medal, help Ashley make the GPF then get that assignment to Golden Spin that would have opened up so she'd get at tune up there still was a nice milestone for her here.
These were the highest numbers she ever posted in the short program and the long program at the grand prix. Not by a country mile, but still a great thing to note after her 9th (!!) season on the grand prix and I certainly think a sign that she's on track to be where she'll need to be come January.
I thought her long program especially showed some significant growth from Skate Canada. Glad to see David Wilson found a way to get that moment where she ackowledges the judges back in. It actually made my heart skip a beat. I see her breathing and feeling the music and delivering the kind of skating that is vintage Mirai and only she can deliver. She is really starting to perform both programs in ways I feel we don't typically see from Mirai in the fall. Also she got full credit for a correct edge lutz! The free skate is really starting to drop in I can't wait to see where both programs are in January!!
And even more importantly she seemed really pleased and happy after the long and I liked the discourse between Tom and her after both skates. That's what I love about our girl. She's always in process. Always growing. Always learning how to be better than yesterday.
I'm sure we'll get to Nationals and we'll see the judges make their plays so things won't be QUITE as wide open as it feels right now, but unless Gracie and or Ashley make some major moves at Golden Spin it really does feel like an open field.
I'm disappointed with the call on her flip/toe in the long though. I watched the jump in super slo-mo in HD and I thought the flip edge looked good and I think she should have gotten credit on both jumps. Anyone else agree?
Anyway super proud of her for the way she rebounded here after a particularly rough Skate Canada. If she's able to make that sort of improvement in four weeks I think we should be able to see great things from her come January!
I wondered, too, why Mirai lost points on her jumps and a level on her spins. Someone said that she had new boots and perhaps those were causing her to have difficulty with her edges. Tom Z is a master technician with those type of problems and hopefully he can help her fix them. Judges do seem to be overly harsh with her compared to others who seem to be given a "close enough" on their edges much easier than Mirai. I do wish she could emote some expression on her face. Her arms and body lines are wonderful. The face just seems so stoic and expressionless. I know that both pieces of music are not light and zippy but honestly maybe some acting classes would help!
