This is how it all started... Katherine Healy performing at age 9-10.
Some people are born with special talent and this shows...
How can it get any better than this for 4-5th graders?

Then, I found 13-years-old Fedor Andreev skating to Scriabin's Etude Op.8-12 in 1996 at the Celebration Of a Life commemorating Sergei Grinkov.

I was shocked.

Are/Were there anymore prodigies and budding talents besides what I have seen here?

I'm confused by your post. Are you asking to see footage of current prodigies/budding talents (i.e., people who would not yet be all that famous), or footage of current stars which may have shown their prodigy status?

If you are looking for the latter, then one of my favs is the Russian folk dance FD V/M performed in 2003-2004 (the year they won Canadian Junior Nationals). I think they were only 14 and 16 at the time. I can't link to youtube at the moment, but I know it's on their website: http://www.virtue-moir.com/videos.htm

And of course, early G&G footage is always fun to watch. I think their "Zorba the Greek" (was it in 1984?) is one of the cutest things ever. It was their first ever Junior Worlds appearance, and I think they were ranked 5th at the end.

all that

BOTH
1> footage of current prodigies/budding talents (i.e., people who would not yet be all that famous)
2> footage of current stars which may have shown their prodigy status

And more...

When it comes to 'prodigies,' there are two possibilities: either the person kept skating to be known to the mass audience or the opposite: Mao Asada, Michelle Kwan, Gordeeva/Grinkov are the former; Ms. Healy and Fedor are the latter. Both cases are interesting to me.

- Fedor's case was interesting, maybe because I haven't seen many artistic intelligence in the field of men's figure skating at such a young age.
-The footage of Ms. Healy was a prime example of a child prodigy: the equilibrium of raw talent, good teaching and discipline... (a side note: her face as a child remind me of violinist, Hilary Hahn... don't ask me why...)

Fedor competed again at this year's Canadian Nationals -- and his musicality was very evident. He is extremely talented, and if he continues to compete, should make the men's field very interesting!!

I saw this young ice dance team on Icenetwork's U. S. Junior Nationals coverage. Joylyn Yang and Jean-Luc Baker- they were the Intermediate Ice Dance Champions.

They have a stand up and notice me quality that is incredible at any age. Here's a youtube clip of their skating from the year before. It's not as polished as this year but still......

Though, it's always hard to predict future champions because anything can happen, especially with ice dance couples. Growth, injury, outside interests, etc.... It's much easier to see them when they are already champions and work backwards.

well of course that was that appearance by a 6 year old emily huhges with Nicole Bobek in the NBC morning news. She skated with Nicole at the Rockerfeller Center rink. this was before her big sis was even anybody!

BTW, Joylyn Yang and Jean-Luc Baker were really impressive. They look very young but skate like adults. I was very impressed.

Speaking of Fedor, does anyone know if he will get gp assignment? I really hope he does:love:

Fedor

I doubt he will get a GP assignment except for Skate Canada International. Skate Canada will probably make a decision on who gets a host pick based on the results on Nebelhorn Trophy 2008.

Skate Canada may send any of the following guys to Nebelhorn before finalizing its host picks:

- Ken Rose
- Fedor Andreev
- Joey Russell
- Jeremy Ten

Personally, I would prefer Kenny Rose or Joey Russell get their chance over Fedor. From outsider's perspective, Rose and Russell appear more committed to skating than Fedor is. At 2008 Nationals, it was Rose who stole the show, not Andreev.

I remember ABC showing Surya Bonaly's 1st appearance. She looked like a knobby-kneed baby pony, but they featured her for her jumping prowess at such a young age.

Michelle Kwan was also considered a prodigy and featured on ABC.

Mao Asada, Caroline Zhang and Mirai Nagasu also started receiving well-deserved attention before their 1st sr events.

I think this boy has an enormous talent... classical clean line, incredible spins, nice flow, etc. His costume and choreography is interesting but not over the top. Can anybody tell us more about him?

Yuzuru Hanyu (12-yr) "Fire Bird"

p.s.
Skating to the "Fire Bird" at 12... I can't believe how mature these kids are!

Really? I don't even remember Ken Rose, but I certainly remember Fedor.

Ken's LP was placed 4th at Nationals. Fedor's LP was about 8th after popping 2 jumping passes. I will give him a credit for his beautiful clean SP, though. Everyone remembers Fedor, because he has a semi-celebrity status and he was hyped going into Nationals.

Why did she switch to ice dance after being a pairs skater for a long period of time,

I think she got too tall for most potential pair partners.

and also did her brother quit skating completely?

He certainly quit skating competitively. I don't know whether he ever gets on the ice.

I do believe Tiffany Stiegler grew too tall for pairs. Johnny Stiegler, in my opinion, was the weaker skater of the two. His decision to quit was a good one. Tiffany, however, was/is, a very beautiful and talented skater.
