Nathan Chen

I wonder if he'll do the USA group number. He didn't practice it at least. But I'd guess so?

And those encores. :ohwell: Let Nathan (and Rika) rest.

I just watched the whole victory ceremony, after having only seen snippets before. Wow, Nathan looked even worse than I thought.
Eyes glazed over, trouble swallowing, obviously congested breathing through his mouth, struggling to stay present and keep his eyes open... I almost felt cold symptoms myself just from watching him. :drama:

What's interesting, when filming the US team, the cameraman/editor chose to show several close-up shots of Nathan's face of all people, and only him, when he was the one looking the least happy and clearly suffering. Weird choice. :scratch2:

Practices and skating those two programs at WTT really were the final straw it seems. The way I understand it, being an elite athlete is already hard on your immune system, but if you then don't even get enough recovery... as I've said before, it's amazing how he did this season, managing a double workload, but I don't think it's sustainable for a longer period of time.
I wish he'd follow Raf's wish and did no more than one more semester at Yale.
Then again, everyone I know has dealt with several bouts of colds this winter season, so who knows, maybe it's not unusual and he would have gotten sick this much anyway, Yale or not. :confused2:

Do you have the link to the ceremony? I haven’t got chance to watch it. It is painful even just to read the posts. I wish he could fly home/Yale today.

Now I feel really bad for wishing him to participate WTT. He had been suffering cold and infection since the Nationals, he probably never got recovered completely before he got another one right before the worlds, and his schedule was so crazy after the worlds:(:(

:pray::pray: Nathan feel better today.

Love Nathan Chen, you guys are great, thanks for all the content and info.

Quick heads up in Victoria Sinitsina's instagram stories (last story, she has a bunch of posts there) you can see Nathan skating in front of her at Gala rehearsals in his Nike black and white sweater as they circle center ice.

I just can't imagine him performing next to me under current condition. And SOI tour shortly after?:noshake:

Can someone please explain again why Nathan had to compete at WTT? Also, doesn’t he have classes right now? Maybe he was able to negotiate some extension/alternative exam schedule with Yale but I find it a bit strange that he seemingly couldn’t miss any class last semester but is able to take so much liberty right now.

Probably for the same reason that he's doing all those SOI shows during the semester? It's lucrative and gives him exposure I guess? And his agent might feel that it's wise to do these gigs (not to mention the money she's earning thanks to it)?
Spending time in Japan and competing in front of a japanese crowd are also pluses I would think, so maybe he didn't wanna pass on this opportunity? And he genuinely seems to enjoy competing.

ETA: And he obviously didn't anticipate how tough it would be on him. Maybe he contracted the cold on the plane, what with all those people travelling and the bad air, who knows. And then the physical exertion made his body vulnerable to any germs that he had already caught.

But at the expense of his health and demands of school, just for a semi serious team competition? It’s quite mind boggling.

I don't think it's about money because Nathan should have plenty of income nowadays. He probably has good memories from the last WTT, and I imagine he likely wanted to help the team win.

He's obviously a super Type-A personality but he needs to go on a long vacation somewhere with Romain and Mariah. Somewhere RELAXING, not a 25 mile hiking trip.

He probably didn’t expect himself to be this sick. He is a very ambitious overachiever afterall. Plus he mentioned that school makes him enjoy/treasure skating even more, something like there are only six competitions a year. I guess if he is thinking about retirement after 2022, there aren’t that many competitions left.

And as 1111bm said, he really loves Japanese audiences, who adore him wholeheartedly. So does the Japanese media. The cameramen love him so much that he had to direct the camera somewhere else.

He probably would reflect on this experience and hopefully learn a lesson not to overtaxing his body too much.

He did take several days off for JO and GPF last semester. He has been balancing school and skating pretty well this semester so far except getting sick a lot.

He also got sick quite a bit last year - before Nationals and then after the Olympics - so this seems to be a trend. But certainly his new schedule/that quick turnaround after Worlds/those SOI shows and then returning to Japan for WTT didn't help matters. I was also really surprised he did WTT - but I think the prize money is pretty substantial and performing in Japan is always a good time.

And I agree sheetz - he needs a good RELAXING vacation!!!!

Nathan, please don’t jump too much!!

He also got cold mid September which turned into infection. He was spotted coughing quite a bit in aboutNathan’s videos. He was still coughing in Liza’s interview which was around late November.

The thing is, he will probably get through the exhibition (he might have even felt slightly better this morning), but at what cost? He will only relapse again, maybe even harder this time. That is like a classic mistake people make when they're sick, overtaxing their bodies again too early. Look how much worse he got the day after skating his FS. And then throughout the day, after spending part of it at the rink, cheering his team-mates on.

I think there is more than he loves to compete or he loves the Japanese audiences. He obviously loves Yale too but chose to do all these at the cost of his health and missing school. Whatever it is I hope he can make his health higher priority moving forward.

I don't understand it either, but I'd guess he didn't want to miss another competition after having to pass up on 4CC on top of wanting to help the US win.

It's just something he'll have to decide because this really can't go on. Doing SOI after worlds, flying back to US and then flying back to Japan is a little unreasonable. Oh and stop in SLC on top of it all. And SOI next week. :noshake:
