Nathan Chen

Definitely surprised at the back-to-back selection but I am a lot more anxious about the new program releases this week than the GP assignment:coffee:

The back to back assignment choice is smart on Nathan's part. He stays in N America and gets his assignments over early. It gives him time to prep for final, Nationals and Olympics with run throughs, program changes, etc...

You and others have provided good reasons for these choices, but what if Skate Canada gets canceled? Canada already declined the JGP, so it had to be moved to France. Is the ISU going to leave everybody assigned to Skate Canada stranded if this happens? The ladies event in particular features some favorites to make the GP Final.

Will Nathan have any senior B or other competitions to use in the place of a second GP just to get familiar with competing his programs? Boston Cranberry Open and TBA location US Classic both occur before the GP season.

The event getting cancelled at this point is doubtful. Most Canadians are going to be vaccinated by say August (so a month from now) and SKCan is almost 3 mos after that.

I've skated in events such as these, and Nathan will be fine and again, it's smart what he is doing. We have a bigger chance of Russia, China or France GP getting cancelled (due to pandemic) than Canada. If it would it would be a shocker.

this is quite interesting. doesn't yuzuru typically pick Skate Canada? perhaps first place in the world gets top picks.
Yuzuru chose Skate Canada when he was training in Toronto area. He's been training in Japan since the whole pandemic thing, and IIRC he's still there.

Yes, World Champ usually gets their choice of assignments within reason. But in this case Hanyu is no longer training in Canada so it doesn't follow that he would automatically choose it.

I respect your knowledge and experience, but my read is Canada is significantly more likely to err on the side of safety than Russia and China would have been. If 2020 Worlds had been in Russia or China, there is a possibility it would have gone ahead, even without any spectators.

I can see the upside of Nathan's choices and hope it will all work out for the best for him.

If Skate Canada is cancelled, Skate America would have to be before it, it's not going to just be something random. Canada has NHL hockey playoffs happening and have been hosting many a sport with audiences. It should be fine. The rest of the world would have shut down before Canada and US again if from Delta variant.

I suspect ISU may have a plan B if SC must be canceled. I checked the event schedule at the Orleans hotel. They don’t seem to have anything going on after SA till Christmas (https://www.orleanscasino.com/experience/entertainment-calendar). Maybe ISU/USFS could use the Orleans as a SC replacement.

Article about Sun Valley on Ice mentions Stephanie Grosscup's relationship to Nathan. Funny how it sounds like she coached him to two national titles.
She was also July 3 headliner Nathan Chen’s first skating coach, teaching him for two years when he was the reigning U.S. men’s singles champion.

Flashback to when Nathan and Karen taught a workshop in Oregon.

I assume Nathan will be heading to Sun Valley today. Anyone know when he'll be practicing tomorrow? Unfortunately I'll be going out of town this weekend so don't know if I'll be able to watch them live. Hopefully somebody will record and upload them later.

Sister Janice was featured in Technology Review, and in her profile there was a small reference to Nathan:
Chen grew up in Salt Lake City. Her parents were immigrants from China. Her brother is a world champion and Olympic medalist in figure skating. When she was growing up, she says, her parents urged her and her siblings to “find your passion and do your best to move it forward in a significant way.”
