Nathan Chen

I really enjoy hearing what Kurt has to say about Nathan's skating. He actually focuses on the performance aspect too and the mood it creates, not just on the amazing jumps. And, yeah, I guess the Russian girls pretty much all really admire Nathan. I hope Maiia K. gets a chance to meet him and to become friends with him too before he steps away. Maybe at the GPF?

In a Japanese TV interview Shoma talks about trying to be more like Nathan
世界で見るとネイサン・チェンが一歩ぬけて1人だけ1つ高いレベルの構成をやっていて。しかも誰よりも安定している。僕もその域に少しでも足を踏み入れられる選手になれるよう練習していきたい。
When you look at the World Nathan Chen is a step ahead, and he alone does the most difficult layouts. Yet he's more stable than anyone else. I want to practice so that I can be an athlete who can step into that domain even if just a little bit.

Raf's Russian interview. As expected, he attributes Nathan's poor SA performance mostly to an overly ambitious layout combined with a lack of prior competitions.

so...is Nathan actually doing any competitions before GPF?

I don't believe so. Not according to Raf in the Russian article Sheetz posted above.

"Does Chen plan to take part in the Four Continents Championship, which will take place in mid-January in Tallinn?"
- Most likely, we will not go there. We plan to take part in three tournaments: the Grand Prix Final, the US Championship and the Olympics. I would not want Chen to reach the peak of his form ahead of time. This is also one of the reasons that he did not perform well at Skate America.

So it sounds like the plan from now until the Olympics is just the GPF, US Nationals, and then the Olympics. In the Ice Skating Podcast, Nathan was most likely just talking about a possible competition in the case that he didn't make the GPF.

In the interview Raf said they were planning on GPF, Nats, and Olympics.

New update from Instagram:

It's a little confusingly worded, is he just being cautious about making the GPF final or is he withdrawing?
My first take was that he would be withdrawing from GPF but since he has not officially qualified so he can't announce his withdrawal. But I am often wrong with what he intended to say on his IG posts so please prove me wrong this time too.

I really hope that isn't the case. His instagram post sounded way too positive to me to be hinting at a withdrawal. With having started off his post with the phrase "Super late to the chase...", I hope he was just talking about having completed his GP assignments as Ella mentioned above. Not really sure. But if he does end up withdrawing then I might become quite concerned about that hip issue of his.

Agreed with your interpretation about the beginning of the post. I just could not understand why he thought GP season was over while he would 100% qualify for the GPF. Anyway I hope everything is ok with him.
