Nathan Chen

Despite the couple of flaws, what makes me so happy about this performance is that he looks so at ease, relaxed and even self-deprecating at the end. He just seemed to be enjoying himself. Other than the one 4F, the jumps looked better with more flow today - at least to me.

Congrats Nathan! I was holding my breath. Shame about the flip fall and the fluke fall at the end - he was just too excited! I agree that it's better to happen here than at the Olympics - I'd be worried if he was perfect here that wouldn't be next time around. I too am worried about his hip/groin issue but he has some time to rest it, of course I am also worried about COVID so hoping he can avoid it. He really is amazing though and I will be pretty devastated if he doesn't walk away with Olympic gold. Now to the really important stuff: the new shirt! Well, it's better than the yellow Charlie Brown one - my main complaint with the new shirt is the little green spot/planet thing. I kinda like the orange/red parts, but I find that one green spot distracting!

Six consecutive national championships! What a great accomplishment. It was an incredible weekend for Team Raf with the ladies gold medalist and both gold and silver for the men.

I was thinking earlier today how nice it’ll be that Nathan gets to go to this Olympics with his best skating friends Mariah, Kaitlin and Jean-Luc!

I was thinking about that too. I think this will only help Nathan, especially since family can't come - he will have his skating fam with him. :love2:

Nathan being so appreciative of the team around him and crediting everyone is so admirable. I can tell Raf is really invested in him and that Nathan sees him more than just a coach. I mean, it's been about ten years. I remember Raf saying in a Russian interview more recently that he hopes Nathan has had no regrets in choosing him to be his coach. Brings a tear to my eyes.

Anyway, got a chance to rewatch that 2nd silly fall, and I laughed. Really proud of Nathan for his accomplishments. I hope he can walk away with the gold in Beijing because he really is that impressive and deserving. It would be such a travesty if he didn't. He's had an amazing skating career and I hope he'll continue to skate another cycle, but if he doesn't then I truly hope he has his perfect ending with that Olympic gold around his neck. He really stands out in that shirt, btw. Again, some really hate it, but I'm happy to see him being true to himself. Looking at what he wears, one can tell that he's not your typical, traditional skater. I've always loved that about him.

Apparently, Nathan didn’t skate in the Gala. Assuming he’s being super cautious with the injury he has and/or because of Covid?
Interesting. How do we keep him safe now until the end of the season? How would that even be possible with training rinks? Don't those get used by the public too even while Olympians are training?

also - he should keep his curly hair the way it is - the last time he cut it in a major competition was this

let them curls free - Nathan - it's all good! we love it

I was most proud of Nathan nailing the 4S and 4Lz after the unexpected 4F fall. The Sal and Lutz seemed to give him the most trouble. It's not easy to land them right after the fall.

The magma costume actually has details and meaning. There're stars, sky, rocket blasting that fits the Rocketman. The red and yellow in general may be a tribute to his Chinese blood and culture, just like his black and white Mao's last dance costume to the Korean people and culture.

ETA: Just realize 2022 is Chinese Year of the Tiger. Anyone see a fearless tiger in the supernova Rocketman costume?

I kinda like the costume while he's skating. Those are fire colors and he looks like a flame while he's spinning.

I still hope he wears the shirt his mom made him to the Olympics.

He did not skate but was Manning the t-shirt cannon and did something with a guitar. I didn’t watch, only heard about it.
