). Anyway, here are some of my thoughts this off-season.He did his cleanest and most technically-difficult LP EVER at 2016 4CC, but it wasn’t the highlight of his year. That is so telling to me about Patrick's perspective on things now.“That was the highlight of my year,” the 25-year-old skater says with a broad grin as he sits at ice level at Scotiabank Centre watching the Stars On Ice cast rehearse on Wednesday.
“I was waiting the whole year to get to nationals just because it’s a comfort zone for me. It’s the closest event to bridging being a show skater to a competitive skater. In my approach to nationals I’m less high strung, I put less pressure on myself.
“Nationals was a great confidence booster and I was so glad to regain my title and to go for 10. That’s my ultimate goal, beyond even an Olympic medal, reaching 10 national titles. I want to come back to Canada, to come home. And that would be icing on the cake for me, beyond my results internationally. I’d be setting a new Canadian record with the most titles and that would prove everything I wanted to do for Canadian skating.”

The snippets we got from next season’s LP almost made me cry. I had a similar reaction to them as I did the first time I saw his Chopin, in that I was completely exhilarated. SO GORGEOUS!!!!! I don’t know if it will top Chopin, but it seems like it very well might. And besides, it’s meaningful to him and he loves it, so that should help him feel comfortable on the ice, as Chopin did. Fans are sometimes critical of skaters’ music/program choices, but really what matters most is what the skater connects to and wants to portray on the ice. What each skater wants to do won’t appeal to everyone (sometimes not to most people), but that’s fine. The skaters are the ones who have to hear their music/do their programs far more times than fans will see them during the season. We can certainly be disappointed with their choices, but there’s no point in whining and complaining about it too much (minor tangent, I know). How does Patrick do this to me? Just a few seconds of a program and I’m already in raptures about it!
I’m so amazed by every tiny movement or pause he does and it seems to always fit the music so well, imo. What an unexpected treat we got from PJ Kwong, and if I didn’t love the program for the skating, I would love it just because of the interview. To hear Patrick talk about his friendship with Eric simply warmed my heart! The Canadian skaters all seem to have such a great bond with each other. When I see things like that (if you want more examples, go to the “Figure Skating Friendships” thread), it reminds me that figure skating really is about more than medals. Thanks for posting this, noskates! Patrick really does seem like a friendly, great person. Your last sentence isPatrick skated in the US SOI in 2015. My friend and I always buy the brunch and the meet & greet and we never know who the skater is going to be. In 2014 it was Ashley and Gracie and I have to say that all the crap that people say about both ladies is total garbage. Neither could have been nicer, took many pictures, were very patient, and were lovely ladies. In 2015 Patrick and Polina were our skaters. Polina only lives a few miles from the SAP Center in San Jose where SOI was. There weren't as many people as usual and Patrick just kept talking to us. At that point he hadn't announced a decision to return to competitive skating but when directly asked he had that little bit of a smile. We left knowing he would compete again.
Another thing that happened.....there was a table in the dining area with about 6 young people that were clearly disabled in some way. Patrick kept looking over there and without anyone asking him he went over to the table, shook everyone's hands, took pictures, etc. They were thrilled.
We then went into the rink to watch warm-ups (part of our package) and there was a local synchronized team sitting in chairs lining one end of the rink. After Patrick went through his routine he went over, went down the line and shook hands with each one of those young skaters. I thought it was a class act and I bet those skaters (from ages very young to teenage) will never forget that.
I came away thinking Patrick was the ultimate professional, compassionate, and worthy of his titles not just because of skating.
What I love most about being a Patrick fan is every time he does a new program!!! I always think, “How will he wow me next!” This program has such great audience engagement and expression. The gestures, the smile, the jumps, everything. Patrick really comes out of his shell in this program, moreso than maybe ever before.
It is not the competitions/accomplishments I’ll remember most from Patrick; it is the actual programs themselves. Thanks for another gem, Patrick!!! The better quality video makes it seem even more amazing!!!

Hello again, my Patrick fan friends! I haven’t posted in this thread in over a month, but I’ve been lurking and following things casually. And I may not post at all while the Summer Olympics are on. (You know how you have to pick and choose your leisure activities in order to still fulfill your real-life commitments). Anyway, here are some of my thoughts this off-season.

Oh, and any news about the SP? I doubt “Sunday Morning” will become an SP.
Hi vivley! It's impossible for me to guess which choreographer did what -- kudos to those who try to do that. Carmerlengo may bring a slightly different flavor to Patrick's skating than Buttle or Wilson and it will be interesting to see what the program is like. At one time I thought Carmerlengo did Esqualo, but then I found out that actually Wilson did it. The Olympic Geopolitical Advantage Calculator is fun, especially if you know more of the answers. I found myself marking "I don't know" on several of them. It's harmless fun for fans to do and I like it.Hi Skatingfan4ever! It's always good to see you on here! Yes, it's great to see athletes become friends that support one another. :agree:
No news on the SP yet - all we know is what Krunchii found out when she asked him - that Camerlengo is choreographing it. As for "Sunday Morning", one of the fans on Twitter guessed that Jeffrey Buttle choreographed it, even though we don't have any official confirmation yet.
BTW, since you will be watching the Olympics, would you mind taking a look at my Olympic Geopolitical Advantage Calculator and letting me know what you think of it? Thank you!
About Rio, 4everchan, you are too funny!skatingfan4ever thank you for such a nice post. It's always nice to read your perspectives. I have to say that during Rio, I may be even more often here as I will have the computer next to the TV... watching the games and checking real life scoring (and lurking on the forum)... that will be bad for me... HAHAHA...
One of the comments from your post that I totally agree with.... YUP Patrick seems to always find a way to create something special with every new program... it's even more true since he's been back to competition. I would also be surprised if Sunday morning became a new SP... it is a bit too much oriented as a crowd pleasing program rather than able to easily be turned into an SP.... Esqualo though, could do so... but at this point, I am thinking that Patrick will bring a completely new SP.... I cannot wait to find out...
Thanks for bringing the collage to our attention.. the journey is not over though and there will be many more pictures to add, I am sure![]()
Yes, Patrick's programs have been even more memorable since his comeback (well, the MTK SP was less memorable, but you all already know how I feel about it). It's like Patrick is getting more out of himself and out of skating these days, so he feels more free to open up to the audience on the ice. You're right -- the journey is still happening and I'm sure there will be more photos to add to that collage.
