Patrick Chan

Dropping by to say Congratulations to Patrick on his win! I'm such a fan of Eric's piece, and I think Patrick does it justice even when the jumps aren't perfect. And congrats on the rotated 4S and getting 2 3As landed!

watched a video without commentary and the full KnC.. i am pleasantly surprised by what I am seeing in there. I think Marina is starting to learn who she is dealing with :) Patrick is capable of the ultimate best as we have seen many times, he is also at times losing focus or his legs in an event... like today... but the interaction with Marina seemed very positive, as if they are both learning and thinking about what they can do to fix things. A lot of this has to do with preparation of course, training and health are essential, but of course a performer needs to hit the zone and STAY in there... and that will be Marina's challenge. I have the feeling she knows that part of the game very well and could be helpful.

From looking again, without overstating what I already said in my previous post, Patrick was in the zone at the beginning, and simply lost it when he fell on the 4S. However, I am glad he went for it as that was helpful. I prefer that he pops the 4t afterwards (but what a gorgeous 3T LOL) but at least get a good try at the quad.

Considering the minus GOE and fall deduction, he still scored 5.5 on that quad attempt... food for thought very soon when it gets more stable... as it could replace his 3Lz in the short program sooner than we think.... in any case, I long to see a clean Patrick for the Journey.. It's a program that deserves it. He has a good amount of time until COC to get things slightly better and way less pressure there.

I am going to Nationals this year. It will be an exciting year with quad king Kevin and new quad prince Patrick ;)

Watch Patrick do his 4S here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55chXIJpj6M&feature=youtu.be&t=69

His hair (on the back of his head even flies up as he lands!

It'd weird because in the warm up he messed up the set up for the 4S and nearly fell because his toe pick was caught and during the program he dug in the toepick again which is what I think messed him up. Here however it's smooth and he doesn't dig in.

After he was sitting in the Kiss&Cry and Oleg and Marina were speaking very seriously to Patrick, like it wasn't exactly a happy talk. Oleg was very animated and had a lot to say while standing in front of him. I wonder what they were talking about. This was during Mura's program where they weren't on camera.

Teaching opportunity.

Very interesting tidbits about the kiss&cry moments. I hope his back is okay - where did he say that? BTW, I love reading all the comments here!

Took me all night to round up everything I could, and even then I know there will be more. Some interesting videos were captured and posted on Instagram, such as Patrick chatting with Yuzu and Kevin as they waited to go up to the podium.

I loved seeing the congratulations from his training buddies Alex and Nathan afterwards - so awesome to have that support!

Thank you for letting me know. I'll try to find those interviews.

In the meantime, here's Icenetwork's article on how the 4S cost Patrick energy. Good that Marina limits his quad practices!

Quad drama: Chan hangs on for win over Hanyu

"Good opening, strong opening, I felt light and confident," Chan said. "My goal was to at least rotate the quad sal, no matter how I felt going into it. Maybe I didn't plan to be as tired, that's one challenge when you add an another quad, experiencing the extra fatigue. So I started dying a little bit, the legs started getting heavier at the end of the program."

Chan estimated his success on the jump as seven out of ten on a good day, and said his coach, Marina Zoueva, was careful to limit the number of quads he tried in his practices.

On a lighter note, this sleeping cat got up to watch Patrick skate - so cute! :)

I have mixed feelings, I'm happy for his victory but sad because he fell into the 4S.
Not by the fall itself, but because I think he needs confidence to strengthen their jump. And I hope that soon he put both programs ...

I am glad for him for the learning experience. He did the 4S as planned and didn't back away from it and it was rotated and credited even with a fall. He now knows how it feels to do a 4S in a competition and how a program with 3 quads feels. He can now prepare himself for better execution and program management in later competitions. It's a step by step process. Nobody can feel for him what it's like, and every quadster feels differently with their different bodies, techniques and mindsets.

Winning the Gold Medal is a great bonus. :) :yes2:

I get what you're saying - I also have some mixed feelings because I think he may have held himself back a bit. But as VB said, it's a learning experience, and the biggest thing I want for him is to find that joy and confidence, and put his heart and soul completely into his performances.

Here's my summary recap post, where I will be adding any EX gala info that comes through:

This has been a marathon weekend, but I've enjoyed it. Now I need to go spend time with family members who missed me all weekend. ;)

Eric Radford: As excited as I am to perform my own long program, I think I'm just as excited to watch @pchan31 perform his long program tonight. Wishing my friend all the best out on the ice at #skatecanadainternational and I hope my music and his skating creates a special moment for all of you! #sci16 #skatecanada #figureskating #journey #synergy #Chanford #gocanadago #enjoythemoment

Yes they did Eric.

ahah, and why not T-shirt? 0_o I like it)) And I don't know what he need wear for this music))

And Patrick was trip over( Hey, somebody knows what the problems he has with his lower back? Does it something seriously?

He has worn a white T-shirt for a few ex programs. So what would you have expected for this gala when he had not even gotten around to have a new costume for his LP? :con3:

I think the lower back problem is minor and will go away quickly. But it was very untimely to have it at a competition. Take care, Patrick. You've had smart coaches who put your health first and you're smart enough to understand and follow the advice. :agree:

Okay, finally done with my Skate Canada blog posts for now.

Watched the EX, and it was strange to see him trip and fall after such a nice gesture to the audience. That will be the third time he's fallen during a step sequence that I've seen on video. Once at Finlandia and twice here at SC. Hopefully, these are just flukes...

Does anyone care to discuss the advice Elvis Stojko gave Patrick in this CBC article?

Elvis seems to be pushing for very aggressive strategies and tactics for Patrick to try. He also compares FS to football and hockey and thinks that without the quads, FS will be perfect but boring. Hmmm... if I recall, before the quads skaters still weren't perfect, and there were falls, injuries, etc. FS will never be perfect.

I like what Patrick said in the second to last paragraph of the article - I hope he keeps that perspective.
