I'm pretty sure Patrick spoke French for a while without knowing English, his French has always been great, I'll always remember that moment when he was to step in during a press conference at Worlds to translate a question for Brian Joubert, what a sweet little potato he is
I look forward to him skating with less pressure on his shoulders now, I hope there's more news about his ice wine coming to stores, it better come on time for the GPs *shakes fist*
Just thought I'd put my first post on this thread now I'm branching out into the Fanfest threads. Patrick's return to competition was a major factor in my decision to take the plunge and go to a World Championship so I'm more excited than usual about the upcoming season. For such an amazing skater, I'm mystified by the amount of flak he seems to have to take so hopefully he can deliver this season and silence some of those haters!

nope… Patrick went to French Immersion school in Ontario. I am assuming he speaks Cantonese but I don't know for sure… French Immersion means that the "mother tongue" is English but students will learn a lot of French… I have met a lot of people going through this system and very speak French as well as Patrick… so that's why i find it amazing, especially since it keeps improving.
Born in Ottawa and lived in Montreal for a while, he went to French Immersion school after he moved to Toronto and they pretty much take all their classes in French so from what I know of him his French was better than English but now he uses English more. My friend's sister went to French Immersion for a while and it's actually quite good, you're completely immersed in the language so speaking it daily makes you learn quickly. He said in a while ago that his Cantonese is very broken so I'm assuming he understands the language and doesn't speak that well. In a radio interview someone had to teach him to say his own name I think
all i can tell you is that his french is not his mother tongue... french immersion is still for anglophones wishing to learn french as a second language and they vary across the country... in BC they are not great maybe in Toronto, the schools are better... as a native french speaker, i can tell you he has a lot to improve in french to be truly bilingual but that is what is so amazing as he keeps getting better and better every year... first time i heard him in french was when he was 17 and he was looking for words and asking help from the interviewer... not this time.. he was much stronger. in any case, let's agree that we love patrick![]()
that's why i find it amazing for him to have retained AND improved his french.
Well he is Chinese-Canadian like myself, his first language was probably Cantonese and then deteriorated over the years learning French and English, I know someone who skated with him before he got any international fame and she told me his French at the time was better than his English, he was popular at the rink with the little girls because he was a good skater, very shy and just modestly told all the girls thank you, his mom is a helicopter mom, my friend's mom avoided her because she found her scary
is helicopter mom like tiger mom?
patrick is so sweet... no wonder why he was popular with little girls![]()
i lived in vancouver for a long time and met many chinese canadians whose parents spoke very little english... so the kids spoke cantonese or mandarin with their parents... or grandparents.... and of course, couldn't write it... couldn't speak it at an advanced level... because they spoke english at school... i think what your friend may have noticed is that patrick being in french immersion seemed more fluent in french than in english (it's a question of perception too... was your friend perfectly fluent in both languages??? if she spoke english as a first language and little french, patrick's command of french would looked much stronger than his english.... ) ... but we can easily agree that french is not his first language.
Patrick's first language is definitely English, French second and Cantonese probably a far third... most people I know who took french immersion forgot all of it after high school...that's why i find it amazing for him to have retained AND improved his french.
much cheaper
Nah she was in normal public school with me and we just have French class once a day, she said she didn't hear him talk much in English and she heard him speak French mostly to others, she was one of the ones who didn't really approach him. e just thank you but I'm not that great at skating
Helicopter mom as in she hoovered around him a lot and was quite aggressive, Patrick when he was young shared the same costume maker as my friend, his mom insisted that his costume be a bigger size so he can grow into it. Not that I blame her, the costumes were $1000+ and for a boy who's still growing it's a big amount to drop at once but apparently she was really aggressive about these kind of things. She speaks English ok from what I know, came to Canada in her early 20s
yup.. that makes lot of sense... gosh figure skating is so expensive... no wonder why my parents told me it was too costly and I should choose another sport...i went into swimming... speedos are 40- 50 dollarsmuch cheaper
