Very, very proud of Patrick, and grateful that he decided to come back this season so I could become his fan. It's been a joy watching him skate and learning so much about him and all the struggles and triumphs he's endured this season. I have learned some life lessons even for myself!

Tonight, I'm sorry that he was not able to show us his great artistry and skating due to his issues with the ice. But I would rather that he simplify his jumps and avoid injury, than fall and injure himself trying to get a medal. I think it was a wise move on his part.

In time he'll need to work out these technical issues and have a strategy in case these challenging ice conditions present themselves again in competition. (I wonder if all the difficult jumping moves the men are doing degrade the ice much faster?) Besides talking to the ISU about smoothing the ice before the final group skates, he may need to learn some new techniques of skating.

Regardless, he has won my approval and I would be proud to tell anyone who would listen about him! :thumbsup:

What I felt bad about was that Patrick didn't get to present a beautiful performance. However, as 4verchan pointed out, he already accomplished that, at 4CC, when he gifted us a flawless exquisite masterpiece. I choose to be grateful and happy for him.

It was actually uncharacteristic for him to make so many errors in one program and the only other time he did was at the Olympics. I don't know the cause of this and will wait to hear from him. I'd like to know what he finds inside himself and any new insight he may have gained from the experience.

What ever happened, it's not him, just as all the glories, regrets, titles, so called successes and failures, situations, etc., are not him. There is a real person inside to be accepted and loved unconditionally, by himself, and by those of us who try.

Let's not make pain and sorrows. Accept everything and everybody. Observe and learn, not judge, i.e. labeling good, bad, etc. If you cannot not judge or label, then, make it "for better or for worse, 4verchan".

Love and bliss to Patrick and all his fans.

Thank you for putting everything in perspective. Patrick will be back and he will have a brand new weapon - a quad salchow.
And I will never, ever forget his magical skate at 4CC. I would have preferred a better ending to this season but I can say will the utmost sincerity that the 2015-2016 season is when I fell in love with Patrick Chan's skating all over again. I will sleep well tonight.

“After two groups of men, all long programs and two six-minute warmups, there was a lot of rust (in the ice) and I couldn’t be confident,” a disappointed Chan said, half apologetically. “The minute I stepped on (I knew). I was very distracted by the look of it.

“I felt like I was fighting my skates or my feet all the time.”

“It’s very personal to me,” said the 25-year-old Toronto skater. “I like to use the flex of the ice. It almost rebounds me and gives me speed into my jumps. It’s just hard when your blade just want to go down because it’s skipping and hopping over jumps.

“I know my ice very well. I just knew from the beginning (that there could be trouble.)”

He may encounter this situation a few more times before the Olympics. I believe this is a challenge that he can overcome if he wants to.

:luv17:thank you for this... we are a special group here... i won't name anyone by fear of forgetting someone... but i think that it is the most beautiful thing when we can rejoice when our patrick does well and can also be compassionate when something doesn't go as well as we wished for...

when i saw him on cbc, i saw a human being... a real one... a deep artist... we are so privileged that patrick opens up to us... not every skater is willing to do so.


it's been a rough night.... and after the free dance yesterday, this hurts even more LOL... but it doesn't matter... in 20 years, there will be a completely different crop of skaters... but i will still be watching Patrick's 4cc chopin... 4everchan TEB 2013 inspired my username...now you know where it comes from... I'm so proud of him! And I don't think he was using the ice as an excuse, it seemed like frustration that he couldn't deliver his finest in those conditions. Such a letdown for him, but overall an amazing season for him too!
People complaining have to realize he is a different type of skater and I loved reading in the other thread how even with the jump mistakes that they still see him as superior in skating to most others. He is special!
Can't wait to see him and the crew at Stars on Ice in May!!!!!

I was absolutely gutted for Sochi and cried for him and I was so shocked how much it affected me.
But for this, I am fine. He had a season of ups and downs with more ups than I thought he would with 4CC being the icing on the cake (again I cried, but for a different reason haha).
I'm excited for him and for next year and I think he will be back in fine form with a positive mindset.
Thank you for coming back Patrick, I genuinely hope you stick it out!
And I know I'm not on here as much, but thanks to everyone for all of the updates and kind words about our guy!

I was telling my racing fan friend that what happened last night was like telling a bunch of race car drivers to compete on a track that was strewn with debris from previous accidents that were never cleaned off. Patrick is like the driver who says, "I drive best on a clean track, and with the debris out there, I couldn't drive well and it was a big distraction." So he slowed down to avoid accident or injury. Most reasonable people would understand this situation and not ask, "but why was the winner able to win on that track?" Well, maybe the winner had more offroading experience, who knows?

Having said that, I think the bad ice could present a learning opportunity for Patrick. I saw this awesome photo that Carolina Kostner had posted on Twitter over the holidays, where she was skating on a pond with the forest in the background. I may be wrong, but I don't think Patrick's ever done that. It would be cool for him to try it (with an old pair of skates) and get used to skating on different ice conditions. Maybe he could study how hockey players skate so fast on the colder, harder ice. Being such a methodical and "scientific" skater, this would be something to preoccupy his mind instead of dwelling on his disappointing performance last night.

I went on Wikipedia and counted - between him, Yuzu, and Javi, they have each won three championships this season, with Javi clenching his 4th last night. It's actually a pretty even distribution. As Patrick said, he has nothing to be upset about when he looks at the entire season. He has exceeded all expectations during the past 6 months after being away for 18 months. Well done, Patrick!

Well,now we can say that the ice conditions determined the result unevitably, and we can be quite relieved about that;a bronze medal here would not have changed anything in his career; the only regret is that he would have liked a bit better performance to close the season.

Okay, so after some debate with myself, I bit the bullet and watched the program. Here are my thoughts/questions (in a rather unorganized, rambling way):

• This performance/placement surely adds more fuel to the haters’ and doubters’ fires. Likely thread title: “Should Patrick Chan hang up his skates?” Incidentally, W&P and Patrick got the same final placement. Fortunately, that thread hasn't appeared yet and I won't read it if it does.
  
  
• The skate wasn’t nearly as awful as I thought it would be from the score. He left plenty of points on the table but didn’t fall. He fought through it. The most difficult part was seeing his reaction of disappointment and frustration afterward on the ice and in the K&C. It brought back memories of his expression after the Sochi FS.
  
  
• The audience was eerily quiet for most of the skate. Granted, Patrick didn’t give them much to cheer about, but still it almost felt like a practice runthrough to me. It was very strange. The mood sort of fit with the melancholy of the music. I felt like I was attending a funeral (maybe because it was this program’s funeral).
  
  
• The ice conditions thing is fascinating to me and I have so many questions. I thought it would only be an issue in Taipei, but I guess it can be a problem at any competition? How does it happen? Is it because the Zamboni person makes a mistake of some kind? How come it hasn’t seemed like an issue for Patrick until, literally, the last two competitions he’s skated in? He’s always skated in a similar way, so has it really never been an issue he’s faced before now? Or is it that he’s finally being candid about it? Patrick is a skater in the truest, purest sense in that he relies on the ice so much to do what he does and expresses such an intimate relationship with it.
  
  
• Might this test Patrick’s resolve of wanting to compete “for himself/for his own goals” as opposed to “future results?” Didn’t he consider stopping his comeback after placing 4th at the GPF? Worlds would seem like a harder pill to swallow because the FS has been his bread and butter all season and yet last night it is what kept him out of the medals. It seems like he’ll weather this and come back stronger from it. The tone of the latest quotes from Patrick and Kathy is “we have a plan for 2018 now.”
  
  
• There is no WTT this year because of TCC, correct? Patrick isn’t doing TCC. I wish there was WTT, as it would give Patrick and us one more chance with this LP. I’m sad to see it go out like this. Maybe he’ll bring it back for JO one year in the future. We have three gems to look back on from this season, though, so I’ll take that.
  
  
• On a positive note, 5th is still “in the mix” and he was 3rd after the SP with a fall. So he must know he still has the goods to get on the podium. It’s a matter of getting a comfortable SP and staying mentally tough and a 4S will be a nice addition (hopefully anyway). In post-FS interviews, he sounds as positive as possible given the situation, not angry, which is a good sign.
  
  
• I am nowhere near as sad about this as I was about Sochi. As VB knows, I wrote long posts in this thread for several days in a row trying to process all the thoughts and emotions I had. I don’t need to do that this time. This post should be enough venting about Worlds.

And here’s something to brighten things up here. Patrick Commentates Skating commentating Patrick’s 4CC FS. He doesn’t like the costume or the music cuts but LOVES everything else. At the end of the video, he says, “Honestly, Patrick Chan skating clean is the peak of what the sport is at this point, so I will take it whenever I can get it.” The whole thing is a lot of fun.
