Patrick Chan

I know Worlds just ended, but I started wondering about which GPs Patrick is likely to get next year. :o: The announcement from the ISU (last season's because next season's isn't out yet), says assignments are made "by draw." But don't the top 3 skaters from Worlds get to choose their assignments themselves? Patrick was 5th at Worlds, so he's still a "seeded skater," but maybe he won't necessarily get SC and TEB as he prefers? How does the assignment process actually work? I'm sure he'll do SC, but will he get TEB or something else?

I LOVE the picture of Patrick smiling!!!!! It is tempting me to change my avatar again. :laugh2: Stay tuned. I also love the one of him flying above the ice.

Skatingfan4ever I'm glad to see that you are back to your regular positive self. I was quite worried about you as you seemed to take Patrick's result at the WC quite hard.

I'm quite sure that Patrick (if he wants it) will be at SC because of the host's pick rule. As for the rest, I never paid attention to details because there was always some kind, knowledgeable poster that explained it when the question came up. :)

Before the start of WC I really thought there was a strong chance Patrick could win the worlds but the final results did not disappoint me. (I really believed the ice conditions played a HUGE factor.) Like Vivley pointed out, his cautiousness with the jumps may have prevented a fall and potential injury. I'm disappointed (but not surprised) by the criticism of his bashers on how Patrick handled the situation. There's a quote by Paulo Coelho "Don't waste your time with explanations, people only hear what they want to hear."

Patrick has given us much to appreciate this year (Skate Canda, GPF, Four Continents). Like you, I just selfishly wanted Patrick to deliver Chopin one more time. :luv17:

I'm looking forward to the next few months as info about new programs starts to leak out. It'll be fun to figure out where Patrick's artistic vision will take him. Right now I can't think that anything can top Chopin but we Chan fans BELIEVE!

my prediction : choreo will be simpler next year.... to allow for the jumping pass... I think that's what Patrick was mentioning about P/C's FD... tricky elements weaved smoothly.... so I think we may be surprised once again and I think that there will be a new balance in his skating... I am tempted to think that he didn't plan to add so much tech content this year, so in mid year he was a bit stuck with programs that were almost too intricate...and difficult to perform in the toughest conditions...

4CC can be seen as even more of an achievement under the circumstances.... It's Patrick at his utmost!!!!! Such virtuosity...

So yeah, I am thinking he will bring us a slower piece..... lots of glide, a 4S 2 4Ts and I would think 1 3A ...

here could be his layout

4S
4T-3T
3A
4T
3Lz-1/2-3S
3F
3L
3Lz-2T

if he is really insanely going after BV

then it would be

4S
4T-3T
3A
4T
3A-2t
3Lz -1/2L-3S
3F
3L

any thoughts ?

I predict the same thing. I love the FS of Lubov/Dylan. I woke up this morning with the music in my head. I guess it's symphony no 2 by Rachmaninoff. It's so majestic and builds and builds. It would allow long edges showcasing Patrick's GLIDE. As our resident musician, is there something similar that Patrick can use?

you are correct Rach 2... great piece... something like that for Patrick would be great of course....

worlds will be in Finland so first thought is : Sibelius Valse Triste but it's been used a lot already R/K and V/M and of course I bet many competitors will use it next year... but Patrick would rock it ...

Give me a couple minutes and I come back for more ;)

an excerpt of this could work Tchaikovsky symphony 5, Andante Cantabile (I am guessing they would go to the point as it has a slow start but it's extremely lyrical) you will notice that after the main lyrical theme there is a waltz pattern which would be great... then there's the beautiful theme again lots of possibilities in the 12 minutes including very dramatic and intense moments...

Still in the tchaikovsky realm the Serenade for strings would be stellar if you have 30 minutes go ahead and listen... but i like the idea of even just the first theme here.... when I hear the strings with sustained notes like that, I just see his skates glide on the ice....

I post these now... and think about a couple more examples....for the FP... I think SP needs to be more uplifting...

PS brahms sextet op 18, mvt 2

this is fun since it has variations and the cuts would be easy to do

which reminded me of this by marin marais : folies d'Espagne because it is the same principle with variations

Now it is true that i come back later ;)

So I just listened to this and I liked it a lot. It was great that you linked the waltz and theme part again to emphasize. I thought balletic as I listened to this piece. You really know your music because when I finished this the next up on the youtube playlist was Rach 2 so you did give me something similar as I requested!
I'll listen to the brahms next and leave the serenade for strings for tomorrow.
Thanks. :)

glad you enjoyed it :)

Any predictions for Patrick's Olympics program types?

What were his most popular and successful programs and should he try pieces similiar to those?

I understand and agree that he must cut down the crazy footwork he always puts into his programs but hope he will concentrate the best for stsq at the climax, preferably at the end.:agree:

My own take is sexy/dangerous SP (Mission Impossible, etc.) and Classical (but upbeat) LP, taking a page from Yuna, what do fans think?

He is one of the more matured male skaters, so I really hope he will capitalize on that!

4everchan, do you know any Classical pieces that are at the level of Tchaikovsky's Concerto 1 in terms of emotional stirring? Kovtun used it in Sochi, so not good to reuse.
