I also don't think that. E.g. the Free Skate at Skate America was way more boring than the one at Skate America - despite the fact that Skate Canada lost both its seeded skaters over the off-season, the second-tiers and young ones stepped up at Skate Canada.

Borudulin is an exciting new Russian macho skater, Abbott can be thrilling if he doesn't make too many mistakes (please land the Quad and don't pop more than one Axel!), Verner can be excellent...

Can anybody explain to me why Dom/Sha got the last start in the CD? Thought it have to be Belbin/Agosto according to the new rule...

It goes in reverse order of World Standings. B&A are currently #3 with 3315 points, whereas Dom&Sh are #2 with 3500. Here's why:

Dom&Sh get 840 pts for winning Euros in '08.
B&A get 875 for 4th place Worlds finish in '08.

Dom&Sh get 551 for 5th place at '07 Worlds (787 x 70%).
B&A get 680 for 3d place Worlds in '07 (972 x 70%).

Dom&Sh get 800 for winning GPF and 400 for winning Cup of Russia in '08
B&A get 720 for GPF silver and 400 for Cup of China gold in '08

Dom&Sh - 454 for '07 GPF bronze (648x70%) and 280 for winning Cup of China (400x70%)
B&A - 280 for Cup of China win and 252 for Cup of Russia silver in '07

In addition, Dom&Sh get 175 for winning Karl Schäfer memorial in 06-07 season (280x70%).

And for this season B&A have added 360 for their SA silver. Which still leaves them in third behind Dom&Sh.

I vaguely recall something about IceNetwork rankings. The truth is that the ISU rankings are not about who's the best skater, but about who's most beneficial for the ISU. That's why the system is so skewed to those who do well in the GP. Almost any other system would be better at identifying who the the best skaters are

I remember two seasons ago, Daisuke Takahashi finished 1st ahead of Brian Joubert despite the latter having won every event he'd entered; this was because Dai had won the Winter Universiade, for which many skaters aren't even eligible (only university students, as I understand it). Also rather mysteriously, 15th-at-Worlds Tomas Verner is currently second, which, much as I like him, is just strange. He didn't even do that well in the GP last season, though of course he won Europeans.

I'm not familiar with Ice Network's formula but I've noticed the rankings are not the same. I guess it's like college football, except there is a playoff-equivalent.

That actually makes sense. The standings are updated after every competition, and Tomas has already raked up some standing points this season - 203 for Karl Shafer bronze and 182 for Nebelhorn 4th. Without those, he had 2889 points, making him #8 (or thereabouts).

I was completely wrong about Kristoffer and Stephen, but I did get Jeremy's win and Vaughn's placement right, and I at least guessed correctly that Tomas would medal. Not bad at all!

Only Carriere for me then. Not a number right Koffe was mostly wishful thinking, I really really hoped for him... I underestimated Jeremy, a lot!
