Yesterday's multi-coloured pinata cake turned out to be a great success (though I disclaimed any and all sugar highs at work as a result). To the point where one of my workmates spent the (quiet) afternoon trying to persuade me to set up a side-hustle baking children's birthday cakes.

:points:, congrats karne:), I often joke while bringing some pies to work that they will eat everything and asking for more, just because someone else did it by hand and because it looks good:laugh:

^ Can I PM you my address. I WANT SOME!

My toddler is 2.5 years today! And she sang jingle bells yesterday. As much as I despise some aspects of Toddlerhood, I have to admit that was pretty adorable.

If there was a possibility, I'd send You a piece of all, believe me, there is no way 3 ppl will consume it all... My mom as usual went overboard, b/c she was angry about prices of bakery pies from where we usually ordered 2-3 kinds of cakes/pies for holidays, so she declared baking all by ourselves:). And I have to keep myself in check to not waddle into work on Wednesday... :slink:

Now, we are about to start pierogi marathon, aka dumplings , we're making them with cabbage and mushrooms and with potatoes with roasted onion:)

And :hb:for Your daughter!

today, I ordered books for learning Italian language and made a weekly plan of self-learning

I decided to go to Milan Worlds to make one of my biggest dreams come true no matter what, even if this will be only for Ice Dance event. I've started to gather as many flags I can, I want to make it happen. And this time I decided that wanting will become happening. Wish me luck, patience in learning and strong will! :)

How fun! Good luck learning a new language!

Generally speaking, I love flags. I love looking at flags; I love finding out the story behind their designs; I love finding out the history of flags...

Unfortunately, flags are a highly contentious issue here in Northern Ireland. So, I tend to completely avoid anything to do with flags in these islands. My love of flags is focussed on foreign flags.

I own a few 3x5 foot flags. The first one I bought was 10 years ago when I was in Scotland for the Edinburgh Tattoo. No, it wasn't a Scottish flag - it was the Flag of British Hong Kong (I have some very good friends who come from Hong Kong). And since then, I have added the following to the collection:

  • Flag of the Kingdom of Prussia (just love the design. So beautiful!)
  • Czech Flag (been there, and tended to support the Czechs in a lot of sports over the years. Particularly a Czech couple who race motorbikes here in Ireland)
  • German State Flag (tended to support the Germans in a lot of sports over the years)
  • Italian Civil Ensign (tended to support the Italians in a lot of sports over the years. And you can see Giorgia Isabella Secchi holding my Italian flag here)

As you may be starting to work out, I prefer the versions of flags which show the coat of arms.

There are other flags which I would love to add to my collection. Here are some of them:

There are probably others that I can't think of off hand.

The problem is that I have got very fussy when buying flags, because the quality of the material varies greatly. You need to physically see them and feel them to know if what you are buying is good quality. You can't know from reading a page online. And you certainly can't tell by the price. As I have found from personal experience. The cheapest flag I bought was the worst quality (the Czech flag), but the next cheapest was actually the best quality (the German flag)! And the most expensive flag I bought didn't have anywhere near the quality I expected for the price (the Prussian flag).

All of which is why I haven't bought any flags for years.

Yes, I have been in tourist shops on holidays which sell flags, but the quality of them wasn't great. The last time I was in a proper flag shop that sold good quality flags was that time in Edinburgh.

Hopefully I will find somewhere that sells good quality flags soon, as I really want to add to my collection. And this being an Olympic season would be an appropriate time to do so.

What flags do you want to take to Milan?

If I were going, I would bring the flags I already have (USA, Canada, Israel, Great Britain, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway Spain, Japan, China), and wave them for the figure skaters of each country. I would need a German flag (for Aliona & Bruno  ) & the Russian flag (especially for Kolyada, I'm hoping that Sergei Voronov gets to go to Worlds, not to mention the Olympics). All of my flags are relatively small. Some day I should invest in banner size ones!

That's the problem with the big flags - they are fine for taking to motorbike races where you are outdoors and have room to either put them on the ground or hold them up. But, they are a nuisance at indoor events, where you have somebody sitting beside you. And I am the sort of person that would be worrying about blocking the view of the people behind me if I had a big flag.

No, small flags are the way to go at indoor events.

I do have a couple of small flags. There is a 12 inch German flag which is designed to be attached to a car window. But, the problem with this is that it came free with a magazine, and has the magazine's logo in the corner! And I have a 6 inch Canadian flag. But, it is made of paper, and got a bit mouldy over the years.

So, if I was ever to get to a skating competition, I think I would need to invest in a whole lot of small flags. Because, like you, the skaters I like are from so many different countries!

And, like you, I also hope Voronov gets selected. Apart from the fact I like the guy, he deserves it. Especially after how he has been overlooked so many times by his Fed. Let's face it, not selecting him a few years back when he was last in form is the whole reason Russia didn't get their extra Men's international slots back straight away.

CaroLiza_fan, thank You a lot for sharing your passion for flags!

Well, I definitely will bring Polish one to cheer on Natalia and Maks in Ice Dance - I'm a bit disappointed by their programs this season, but they are proudly representing my country and I always support that. Next, Italian flag to cheer loudly for Regina Carolina and Anna/Luca foremost - I do hope they will be there to say goodbye in competition. Then, definitely US, Canadian ones to cheer and support so many skaters I like from there: all ID teams, Alexa/Chris, Jason (hopefully!), Adam, Kaetlyn, Patrick (again, hopefully!), Ashley, Mirai, Gabrielle and many others... Biggest dream would be to have Canadian flag signed by Tessa and Scott. Then, Japanese, Chinese, Kazakh flags for sure, also Russian, GB (if Penny and Nick would be there), French (mainly for Vanessa and Morgan!) and German (for Queen Aljona and Bruno), Georgia flag to cheer Moris, Spain one to cheer on Javier, Olivia/Adria, South Korea one, Hungarian (to cheer on Ivett) and probably few others...

The flags sure won't be the biggest and most effective ones due to plane luggage restrictions, but I'll try to do my best to have them and get them signed by as many skaters as possible:)

I am a fan of ski jumping. But, ski jumping isn't a big sport in the British Isles. And that is because the people in these islands only tend to be interested in sports where there is local success.

There haven't been many British ski jumpers, for the simple reason that there aren't any ski jumping hills in these islands. So, any that do have to train overseas, which makes it very expensive.

Then there is the legacy of Eddie the Eagle. Although Michael Edwards made ski jumping famous in the 80's, his reputation has cast a shadow over the few jumpers that have come along after him. Because Edwards was so far off the rest of the field at the Calgary Olympics, British jumpers aren't taken seriously.

But a few weeks ago, a young English ski jumper made his World Cup debut. And he was actually pretty good. And given that he is only 17, he looks very promising for the future.

This guy is exactly what ski jumping needs to become popular in these islands. And it is just perfect that he has arrived on the big stage during an Olympic season, when more people are paying attention.

There's just one problem... he's jumping for France!

But, I don't blame him. Jonathan Learoyd was actually born in France (his parents are English), and the French team is a much better set-up than anything he would have if he was competing for GB. It is because the French system is so good that he has made it to the World Cup at such a young age.

Put simply, if he had come up through the British system, he wouldn't even be anywhere near Continental Cup yet. It would be a much slower journey, because a British ski jumping programme wouldn't have got any funding. You only get funding if the powers that be think you will win a gold medal. Like, even athletes that have finished on the podium, but not won, have had their funding cut. So, somebody looking funding for a sport that Britain is famous for not being good at would be laughed out of the room.

So, there only ever was one option.

I'm still gutted that we have missed out on the chance of having Learoyd raise the profile of the sport in these islands. Because, as a fan of the sport, I want it to be more popular.

But, as you know, unlike most people in these islands, I don't care about what flag somebody competes under. If I like them, I'll support them. And Jonathan certainly has my support.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST JONATHAN!!! :cheer:

I can’t park.

I can relate to this, too. A few days after I passed the drivers' test (for PA), I took one extra lesson in parking. I needed it! To this day, I will park a little further away where there is a shopping center parking lot, just to avoid tight spaces where a car has a good chance of getting nicked.

My mom had a great idea once I passed my driving test. She made a simple cardboard sign which we displayed in the rear window of the first car my dad passed on to me; "New Driver: Please be patient!" To this day, I believe that the sign really helped. Most people respected it (exception - one "joker" who recognized me/knew me, who kept honking @ me on purpose on a relatively quiet street (no hard feelings towards this guy - he was always a practical joker). Just the other day I saw a professionally made bumper sticker on someone's car @ our nearest shopping center. it said, "New driver, please be patient."

I spent the entire Christmas holiday eating cookies (my mom makes the best ones) and now that I am back home I feel like death thanks to the sugar withdrawal.
