Random Confessions

last night, it was Roanic playing... but like for skating, I cheer for many tennis players ;) Stan, Feddy, Nadal was my favourite for many many years... and I ADORE KEI :) I haven't seen Thiem play much yet.... but he is doing well so sooner or later, I will watch him... there are only a few players I really dislike ;)

I like Kei for all the shallow reasons! :drama:

Although, as someone who has spent a fair amount of time in the Western half of my great Commonwealth, with family there now, the actual spelling of "yinz" is "you'uns". And the vowels sounds hover between "I" and "U".

As in "Do you'uns want some pop before I red up the house?" A sentence that makes perfect sense to Pittsburghers but not Philadelphians.

Go Steelers:hap10:

I haven't been around in a long time (not sure why) but was drawn back by US Nationals and also b/c of seeking an escape from actual US news. So glad to see so many familiar names and hope everyone is doing well! :yay:

As to "yinz," I actually grew up in Pittsburgh; haven't lived there for many years but still go back to visit family. As such, felt compelled to weigh in:

1. never knew that it could mean "you" singular as well as "you all" plural. Then again, in the South, y'all can also be singular. And now, my Inner Grammar Nerd is going cross-eyed.
2. can confirm that vowel sounds differ; in my family we lean toward the "I" but either way works. It may vary according to the part of Pittsburgh you're in.

New Pittsburgh confession: y'know those stretchy things that you wrap around bunches of things to hold them together? I grew up calling them "gumbands," which made a bunch of NYC'ers  the first time they heard me say it. *hides face*

Other confessions: I also love "Legally Blonde," "Sister Act" and "The Devil Wears Prada." "LB" is my #1, though. Maybe it's Bruiser the chihuahua. And the bulldog...and the bend & snap...and, oh, just about everything in it.

I'm also a Screaming Maniac Grammar Nerd but only for native English speakers. English is the only language I'm really fluent in so am not about to start criticizing those who learned it as a 2nd or 3rd.

As for cheesy pop songs, I can't help it: still love "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go."

And...20 years later, am still ticked about Tara L winning the OGM! (even though I finally accepted that on the night she did give the better performance.)

Ready to scream b/c the Steelers are screwing up AGAIN. :drama:

I feel your pain about the Steelers.:dev2:

But confession: I am a fair weather Steelers fan. When the Eagles predicatably fail to make the playoffs, I root for the Burgh. Not before.

After the second quarter, I decided it would be much less painful to just watch the US Nats Gala than put myself through the suffering of watching the Steelers messing up like they did :sad21:

i am hungry but don't want to cook nor clean dishes.... but i am willing to get out of the house, go to a restaurant and get take out.... my laziness will cost me more money and actually will represent more time than just cooking and cleaning.... sigh.. what's wrong with me???? Patrick Chan withdrawals???

Boy, it's convenient to come here regularly but the Catholic church may want to get this thread shut down and out of business.

Let me tell you a story for my latest confession.

A bit of background first.

Last season, there was a competition where 2 skaters from the same country were competing against each other for the first time.

The older skater had been competing at this level for a good few years, and in that time had never had any opposition at home.

For the younger skater, this was only her second competition at this level, and her first competing against the older skater. But the difference was that, when coming through the younger age groups, she had always had opposition at home.

Much to everybody's surprise, the younger skater beat the older skater at the first attempt.

When discussing it here on GS, another member asked me for my thoughts. And I said that whilst I was expecting the younger skater to start beating the older skater in the next year or two, I wasn't expecting it to happen straight away.

And this member asked why I thought this, and I gave a frank and honest assessment:

The younger skater had been on an upward curve the past few years. The older skater, on the other hand, had been on a plateau for the past few years. Her scores hadn't improved. And I was putting it purely down to her having no opposition at home to drive her to improve. I also added that having this other skater at the same level will help them both, as they will be driving each other onwards.

And I got a snarky remark back about that just being my opinion.

That was alright, because it was my opinion.

About 6 months later, I was talking to somebody else. And they informed me that the member I was talking to that time was actually the older skater's mother!

I near died of embarassment, and of shame! :o: :drama:

So the moral of the story is to be diplomatic in what you write. Because you never know who you might be talking to.

Put it like this: I know that one of the skaters that has been competing at Europeans this week is a member of this forum. Although they do not post, they do actually read the comments.

And some of the comments about them on here have not been very nice.

In light of this, we should all bear in mind these wise words that a father gave to his son:

If someone will not post, then the reason for their registration as a member will be................ to report offensive posts! :dev2:

And I always thought the question "Are you so and so's mother?" was just someone being snarky. :dumb:

The thing is, this skater is being seen in a bad light because they fell out with another skater. And that other skater has taken it badly, and so started spreading rumours about the first skater to get back at them. (No prizes for working out that this second skater is a teenage girl).

But, because the first skater does not want to say anything bad about the second skater, we are only hearing the latter skater's side of the story.

So, given that they are being so honourable about this other skater, I don't think they are the sort of person to report posts behind a veil.

So did I! But, it seems there are quite a few parents of skaters on here. Some make themselves known, others do not.

And I should add - although I refer to the skaters that I run Fan Fests for as "my children", I don't have any children in real life.

I was just being evil without regarding your case. People often make a big deal out of or speculate and project wildly form snippets of facts/rumours. I tend to conserve my energy by not taking things personally or speculating with little info yet limitless possibilities. Futility is draining.

I don't see your interchange with the other poster as being something to be embarrassed about. You just gave your opinion based on your observations rather than biases, judgements or ill intention as far as I can tell from the details given.

A good way of looking at things! :agree:

Thank you. It is good to hear somebody say that, because I was trying to be constructive when I had that conversation.

I like both the skaters involved, and I want to see then both doing well. I had been finding it disappointing to see the way that the older skater's results had plateaued, so I really want to see her take advantage of now having somebody to measure herself against, and use it to progress her skating.

But, unfortunately, her mother thought I was just being critical of her little girl :disapp: (I have a feeling this impression arose because English is not their first language).

So, I try to be even more careful now with the way I word things.

GO ROGER :)

Me too. So Rafa will win. Because that's my luck this week. But I think getting to Final in that age, playing two weeks against younger players, it's already huge achievement of Roger. Whatever result, he's one of the greatest. Rafa of course too.

I'm a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest. Been to 4 live finals ( Oslo-2010, Malmø-2013, Copenhagen-2014, and Stockholm - 2016). I've also been to many national selection finals and semi-finals in Denmark and Sweden. Sweden's Melodifestivalen is the best of all the national song selections contests for Eurovision. We'll be going to Denmark's final 25/2 and Sweden's final 11/3. Eurovision has it all: glitz and glamour, cheesiness to class! My favorite guilty pleasure! And Australia is coming back this year! Favorite countries over time are Finland, Austria and Belgium. They always come from left field and are very special. Speaking of Austria, I am a big fan of Conchita Wurst! New album soon!
