Retirements Going Into 2015-16 Season

Best of luck to Simon in the future. I wonder what's next for DeeDee - I really feel for her. It seems like she has a lot of potential but never found a stable partnership.

Didn't see the end coming for Simon and DeeDee. I wish him well, and I hope she has a full recovery. Concussions can be a tough thing to get past, I hope hers was minor.

This doesn’t seem to have been publicised at all, so I think we can be forgiven for missing it.

Ten days ago (21st July 2015), the FFSG put up a story that Daria Popova had decided to retire, and that the guy who was supposed to be her new partner, Andrei Novoselov, would now be partnered by Lola Esbrat.

Here is the link, although I should warn you that the story isn't coming up in full:

https://ffsg.org/daria-popova-couple-artistique-fin-de-carriere/

There is absolutely no mention of this development on Daria's Facebook or vKontakte profiles. Or on the FFSG's Facebook page.

So, when you put this all together, I wonder if the FFSG accidentally put the story up early, and are now trying to cover it up until it is meant to be released.

(I wouldn't put anything past the FFSG!)

Anyway, thank you to AllieLex at the IceSkating&Ritmica Forum for letting us know about it.

MODS: Feel free to delete this comment if you think we should wait until something definite is announced to discuss this. I only put it up here because the Italian forum is duscussing it, and is posting about it on Facebook.

Who is going to replace Anna and Eveline as ladies skaters from Switzerland?

I have a question that I think is appropriate for this thread: Would a Junior Skater who makes TES mins in both the SP and LP programs and achieves World Senior MIN TES while skating as a junior qualify for Worlds. Another words does the MIN values count even if you aren't skating as a senior? I know that a senior can't qualify for the Junior Mins, but does it work the other way around?

Reading some of the names on this thread makes me realise how much coverage I'm missing being a fan of a sport that is firmly a minority sport in my country. In Ireland, we basically rely on Eurosport for all of the coverage and great though it is (they now also show the Grand Prix series), we don't see a lot, including the first few groups in each discipline at major championships, most junior coverage (they showed the world championships one year), various countries' nationals etc. And then there was the major disaster of losing Eurosport from my cable provider for four or five years at the being of the 2000s and of course they didn't have Olympic coverage before now. :disagree:

That's why it's great to see names and links on threads like this that I can use to educate myself about the skaters I rarely if ever see.

So, thanks for that guys, hopefully I will get to see more of these skaters before the retirements are being announced!

Yes. This is the only reason why Polina Edmunds was able to compete at the Olympics, which was only her second ever senior event (U.S. Nationals having been the first).

Just curious: What major scholarships are you referring to?
Has Christina discussed them openly on social media and/or when interviewed? Or are you a friend of hers who is privy to inside information??

(I am a Christina fan who agrees that she has a brilliant future outside of skating.)

I had heard that in passing on the US broadcasts years ago. No I'm not a friend of hers. :P

I wonder if they had overstated it in the past? Maybe we can search Harvard's scholarship recipient database? I believe those are public, yes?

[madly Googling]

I think Harvard has a need blind admissions policy, so anyone who is accepted will get enough financial aid to attend. The exact amount depends on some complicated formula taking I to account parental income, assets etc. I beleive it is also zero loans, so all the financial aid willbe in the form of grants (or scholarships). Maybe that is what they meant.

None of which is evidence of how much or how little aid Christina Gao is receiving.

Many Harvard students receive aid.

Some do not, because they do not want or need it.

eta: BTW, student loans often were part of the Harvard aid packages in the past. I don't know whether Harvard's policy has changed.

Christina Gao was always an amazing skater. But she chose to leave Orser as a coach because she was going to Harvard. Maybe you should look at it as a fan as a moving on process. She is moving with her life plan. She didn't get to go to the Olympics but Harvard isn't that bad either. She balanced choices and both were great.

I have never questioned Gao's choices, so I trust that your post is not directed at me.

Kiira Korpi will retire, at least a Finnish magazine writes so today. Press conference is probably tomorrow.

Well we know nothing for sure yet, but if this is true I wouldn't be surprised. She was a great skater with, always very elegant and pleasant to watch. Last season when I saw her SP at the Europans I thought that it is exactly what is missing a little bit in women's skating. Classic elegant skating of a women, maybe with not so difficult jumps however with a lovely skating and presentation. But she had very hard times because of the serious injuries and maybe she is injured again(concerning she WD from her GP). So if she is going to retire I understand it, because the past few years was for sure very difficult for Kiira.

 I know this is not a surprise but it feels so bad. She was and is my favourite skater ever. This is end of an era - Susanna, Jenni, Laura and now Kiira. The new generation is coming but is there any really promising skater? We'll see.

Yep definitely end of an era. I remember 9 years ago when Kiira was selected to Olympic team, I didn't even follow skating or watch the Olympics but I remember seeing her picture on front cover of some paper and thought wow she's so beautiful and her eyes were full of fire...also as I am a big "what iffer", I feel that had she done some different moves during her career she might be a World or Olympic Medalist: maybe changing coaches/coreographers/training place earlier, not be so perfectionist with school and everything else outside skating; she definitely had the talent of being on the World Podium. But she was very successful and popular nonetheless. Wonder how long we have to wait to see another Finn at the top again.

Kiira is not injured but she lost her motivation to compete. She will definitely continue skating like shows. She will be at Finlandia Trophy.
At least she will make it easier for one of Finnish young skaters to get to Europeans and Worlds as only one can get this season.
