Rosters are up

I think Joannie tends to be marked higher on Canadian soil. The 103.75 score she got for her trainwreck of a FS at Calgary was a major, major gift. IMO, she was overmarked a bit at SC too, but not quite so blatantly.

Torino? Did Joannie medal at Torino? I believe she placed 5th. The SP and FS scores she earned there would have placed her 5th at Calgary also.

Joannie was a very good fifth in Torino, behind Slutskaya (not competing), Cohen (not competing), Arakawa (not competing) and Suguri. Her freeskate score, I believe was the second best of the competition behind only Arakawa.

Overmarking, of course, is subjective, but I actually don't find her overmarked a great deal.

Another poster has stated that at her best she cannot stack up against Miki and Kimmie's difficulty...not at all true. Joannie has proven in past performances that she can do the triple/triples as well. I adore Yu Na Kim, but I also love Joannie's flamenco - I think it's a great style for her.

That's not to say I think she's the favourite here, as I don't. I think Miki and Kimmie are more likely to end up on the podium. I just don't think you can count her out.

Joannie finished 5th in the Torino FS with a score of 111.42, behind Arakawa, Cohen, Slutskaya and Suguri. But she was 9th in the SP. That is one problem with Joannie. She rarely seems to be able to put two clean programs together.

She doesn't get overmarked frequently, but she does get a little extra help when she skates in Canada.

The one 3/3 Joannie has done in the past is the 3T3T. That just does not compare in difficulty to Kimmie's 3Z3T and 3F3T, and Miki's 3Z3L.

You are entitled to your personal preferences. I much preferred Kim's program and skating to Joannie's. There is a lightness and ease of motion with Kim, while Joannie powers through her program with noticeable effort. With Kim, you can say "she makes it look so easy", while you could never say that about one of Joannie's performances.

I just don't think you can count her out.

I agree with that. I never count out any of the top 4 or 5 in a competition, especially after Sarah Hughes at SLC

I have to admit I was not that impressed with Joannie's flamenco program. I still see the same 'rote movements' of hands and arms I've seen from her in every program, and to me, that is not interpretation but simply dutifully doing the movements the choreographer gave her. She powers through the program and makes the inevitable mistake halfway through, another common happening. She is good, but far more athletic than aesthetic, and I prefer athleticism to be less obvious. Watching Joannie, I feel exhausted at the end of her program instead of uplifted.

And I do not like her costume. It is much too busy and ornate, and frankly, it overwhelms her. A simpler costume in a bright color would have been far more effective.

plus JR's spins and spirals are UGLY, even worse than Miki (at least in terms of spins).

HUH? Her spins may not be amazingly fast, but they are far from ugly. And her spirals are the most certainly NOT ugly. They don't have a perfect split, but they have great extension, toe point, a great back position (ie. unlike Ando or Kim), and good edging. I don't know what you are seeing.

I think Joannie should go for broke at TEB. IMO it's time she pulled that 3F/3T out of her arsenal and kick butts! :D I can't wait to see this new LP skated up to its potential. This might be my favourite program from Joannie since 2003.

Her spins and spirals are horrible. Slow, heavy, sloppy and ugly. I can't believe those sorts of spins got level 4 at Skate Canada. She's way overmarked there.

Just read from their blog that Zhang/Zhang will NOT attend the TEB event! Some pairs will feel really happy about this!

Count me in as another who think Rochette is overrated and at times, overmarked. Even with some errors, I greatly preferred Kim's LP at Skate Canada to Rochette's. But skating style preference is of course, subjective. I don't know so much about what constitutes certain levels, but I didn't care for her spins either.

She may not have the fastest spins, but her spirals are not at all slow. She doesn't have the best split position — in terms of position I think the best in the world these days is Alissa Czisny, but speed and quality of edging are very good on this element.

Personally, I find almost all of the spins in every discipline quite ugly these days, and didn't find Joannie's any more so than most. Someone I'd like to see improve here would be Yu-Na Kim who almost has a fantastic layback - extremely flexible back position, but a bad leg position that detracts from the overall effect.

as a realistic choice of course the bulgarians for 1st ...right?!
but they "innovation" in the theme of the bulgarians FD to me doesnt work as well...
on the other hand... the french(DEL/SCH) might have a chance having inconsistancy.....eh....but best wishes to them!

Put me as another one not so impressed with Rochette, she deserved to win Skate Canada. Her jumps are nice when landed, but I don't see how she'd get GOE on anything else. Her spins and positions are mediocre at best. Her spiral is not bad though. I like her split jump.

Thats what I said, there are no start orders or NOTHING up and competition supposedly begins today. Strange!

I know what you mean. I like her , but there seems to be something missing from her skating. Her jumps are great, but sometimes she looks a little stiff and a little hard to me. Maybe she is Tanya Hardings daughter. They are very similiar to me. She is not as bad as some though, and I am sure the Canadians are glad to have her.

Fans of Virtue/Moir may be dismayed to find that Igor Zavozin (father of Max Zavozin of Matthews/Zavozin) is judging the ice dance competition.
Are Virtue and Moir regarded as the big threats to the rise of Matthews and Zavosin? More so than, say, Faiella and Scali? At least Matthews and Zavosin are not in this competition.

This is where the secret judging does us a disservice. Suppose that one judge's marks come out consistently low for a particular team that is in competition with M&Z. We will never know if there is anything fishy going on or not.
