Russian Team Event 2021 - Thoughts on the format

I would not be happy about this ahead of time. Considering the clear favoritism of 1TV towards the TT team, and the tendency of their coverage of the recent Russian championship. I would very much like to make a mistake and Let this event become a real celebration of sports for skaters and all fans. :hap10:
I meant more that at least the team captains aren't literally Eteri and Plushenko, but I absolutely agree that I hope it's a fun event that's more focused on pure love of skating than petty media-manufactered rivalries. And with no one skating while sick, PLEASE.

Quite apart from the Team captains, this format reminded me of the WTT which is also a fun competition (I think someone else mentioned it as well in this thread). I hope Channel one will broadcast it worldwide as with the Russian Nats. I'll skip the jump competition though.

Genuinely curious here: if it were a spin competition, would you skip that too? And just in general, would you mind sharing your reasons for skipping the jump competition? Is it that you think of a program as the "proper unit" for appreciating figure skating? Do you like the way all the elements and the music come together in a whole in a program? Or you don't like the competitive aspect of a jump competition? No pressure to respond! I just find this very interesting.

That's quite all right Tonight's the Night. I've seen jump competitions before, and - dare I say it - they bore me. I actually like the idea of it, just as I like the idea of a spin competition. I would take a look at that, just to find out for myself whether that would bore me too (or maybe not). It probably will depend on what they are going to be: who has the best Bielman (boring), Camel, etc., or whether it would be more in the sense of finding new positions and still remaining fast and centered. The last way of doing a spinning contest would probably be fun. The competitive aspect is fine.

And, yes, I love how the elements and the music come together as a whole in the programme, especially when skaters show off good skating skills into the bargain. It's why I was so enjoying the men's programmes at the Skate Canada Challenge - oh boy the skating skills and so many men with - yes - good spins. I didn't really mind there being less quads on the whole, and even just double axels in the lower ranks. Don't get me wrong, I like some good jumping too - within a programme! Fascinating how some skaters can include difficult jumps, and still show a beautiful programme with all that takes.

Incredibly clever of the channel to come up with this idea.

Alina and Zhenya are stars. There was nothing quite like the drama of their Olympic story and if they're getting paid big bucks and getting huge exposure for this, I'm all for it!!! Terrific way for them to raise their profile, make money and delight fans as far as I'm concerned.

The whole idea is just genius I can't get over it! They've managed to incorporate Zhenya and Alina historical drama in with the current crop of stars like Anna, Kamila, Sasha, Alena etc. Pure genius!!!!!!

I am so here for this!!!!!!

Just saw an article that quoted a prize fund so the athletes will also have a bit of financial support. It also said they will have audience, which is a bit less of welcome news. They also mentioned the separate trophy for the viewer’s favourite determined by voting during the direct translation (immediately saying it will be Zagitova).

Reply to several: of course there is that "elements" component in some competitions, which is conceptually not too far away from a jump competition, and which I assume many Golden Skate members could talk about with expertise. And such a thing is going in Russia right now, in this Moscow tournament. There's a GS thread on it here: https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/t...-to-russian-novice-nationals-jan-19-22.87638/ And the results are here: http://ffkm.ru/images/files/online/PM2021ml/ Three rows of results for each age/gender category instead of two. And I like Ladyjane's idea of a more "creative" spin or jump competition. Maybe alligators on either side of a very narrow patch of ice.

I'm totally excited for this!!! :hap10:I already want Team Zhenya to win. Since I love them all, especially the pairs, I don't care who is in it! :biggrin:Russians are the best when it comes to put a competition in place. Can't wait!

Bought tickets on the short programs. The prises are very good on this event. The most expensive ticket is about 50$. I was on GP Rostelecom several times and this year also. The organization was not bad. The seats are sell in the checkerboard order, the stewards are looking if all are wearing masks. I believe that this time the organization will also be on desent level.

I don't want to sound combative [translation: I do want to sound combative] but why is it a jump competition instead of a spin competition?

Ah, Russian figure skating, you rarely disappoint me, but when you do it is all the more painful.
I think since this is the first time they’re organizing something like this, they just went with the most important element - jumps.

The question for me is how it would be judged. I would really love if they measured height, length, speed and determined a winner on those kinds of criteria, not just GOE.

also would be interesting to see the same thing implemented for spins in the future, measuring the speed of the spin, perhaps taking into account the complexity of the position, and so on and so forth.

These sections, if they will introduce these kinds of criteria, actually become something entirely different to what we’ve previously seen in figure skating.

I really like the jumping competition 🤣. I may be one of the only ones but I don’t like this whole team Zhenya/Alina thing. I find it is firing up people with hate online (on insta/twitter etc..) which is sad - cheer for who you want and may the best team/skaters win. I hope everyone has fun and we are in for a treat w an extra skating comp.. (I also don’t like this whole covid doesn’t matter w a team comp but it’s Russia and we know they will keep going :))
