So, last night I was watching the Ladies Grand Prix Final SP on Universal HD with Mr. luna. Ryan Bradley was a commentator. During the warmup, he said Kaetlyn Osmond may be the best skater in the world at this time. We rewound it to make sure we heard correctly. As he didn't say "female skater," I assume he's including men in the comparison, too.

Thoughts?

Ryan, in speaking "the best" was referring to the ladies which he and Tanith were analyzing. He also went on to describe her improvement this year, her speed on the ice and powerhouse jumps, perhaps even outdoing some men. That was my take away.

IMHO, he's right regarding how she has shown improvement and should this continue, a 6/7 triple Osmond, is likely on the podium at worlds.

BTW, no disrespect but I think this topic has been talked ad nauseum, the past few days. There is a K.O. thread in FanFest should anyone like to contribute. :)

She has a lot of sass and flirt in her skating. Great SS, lots of speed and transitions in her skating. She is just a little "wild", she is literally flying everywhere. I think she has lots of potential if she can land a 7 triple program and get more unique programs.

Kaetlyn and pre-2014 Gracie remind me a little of each other. Lots of good basics, big jumps and loves to barrel across the ice.

Lots of critical opinions may end up not appropriate for a Fan Fest. You would probably mind if someone (me, for example) went there and listed all the reasons why she's far, far from being the best in the world.

One day when Osmond performs a clean FS with 7 triples then we can start talking about this sort of statement, otherwise, it does not have enough of the actual basis

One reason I thought it was notable is because there seems to be a lot of disagreement about Osmond on this board, and Ryan's statement was pretty dramatic. I recall commentators saying it about Yuna and Kurt Browning said it about Mao the year she did so well but couldn't go to the Olympics because she was too young. Both of them had accomplished far more than Osmond at the time of the statements.

I did like Osmond's SP at the finals, though.

Yes Lipea...the same was said last year regarding her hitting the 200 mark...now that ceiling's been smashed, it's all about her not being perfect... Kaetlyn's a bona fide threat and some here are just a bit ...nervous, shall we say. No surprise where this thread is going. :rolleye:

As we all know, nothing unites people more in their fear, than hate, so bash away, bash away, bash away all!

Later.

What I have noticed is that, like Gracie, Kaetlyn's skating has never been fully liked by everyone.
The main criticisms of Kaetlyn this season can easily be seen on the comments section of Youtube videos of her. They include:

-Judges reward her generously for the seemingly lack of program content (which I disagree with)
-Some comment that she just 'ticks the boxes' and doesn't emote.
-Her lack of jump technique or control over her jumps

You can read them here

I also remember when she was from 2011-14, people would comment at how "ugly" or "not pretty" she was and people made unreasonable comparisons between her and Kostner/Yuna/Mao etc..
You know, usual crap.

Thanks. "Ugly" and "Not pretty"? That's rough.

She's completely different from the rest of the field, and that's why I have grown to love her skating this year. Different is bound to be ruthlessly criticized.

You can tell that Katelyn is advancing to one of the top skaters when she has her own thread on this site "Kaetlyn Osmond?".
Is she ugly and not pretty because she has dark brown hair and not a blonde. Accept the fact that she is here to stay and the judges are accepting her as a first class skater..

I'd be more of a believer when she gets 200+ outside of Canada when the Tech Spec is NOT Canadian.

She scored 187.27 at Finlandia and 196 at CoC.

I've never seen a clean short and a clean long at the same event from her: here at GPF she did probably her best outing and still the FS only had 5 triples. (I could stop here)

Even with two clean skates, she can't backload the lutz in the short or the 2a-3t in the long so she has to rely on the judges, hoping for a GOE fest and the uncalled edge on the lutz (or several mistakes from the others) to stay relevant.

Yes she is a great skater, she has a great charisma, the skating skills are there, but she is not trained to be even a world medalist: she could be medalist but only under certain circumstances. That's not top skater level to me.

One day when Osmond performs a clean FS with 7 triples then we can start talking about this sort of statement, otherwise, it does not have enough of the actual basis

since when is a 7 triples FS a requirement for being a great skater?
Yuna, Caro, Mao for example

Accept the fact that she is here to stay and the judges are accepting her as a first class skater..

That does not equal she is currently the best skater out of all women and men. Not even remotely so.

But that's not even what the OP said. The question was "Kaetlyn Osmond may be the best skater in the world at this time" and asking for thoughts. Between men and women. So yeah, you better believe you need to be extraordinary in order to be considered the best skater across categories.

Interested to hear the debate...

And for those outside Canada that don't have the history....

- She broke through the Canadian "wait your turn" ceiling that seemed to be crowning national women's champions that were not doing well elsewhere, opening the door for true competition and competitiveness

- She trains at a club that uses a very public rink in one of the largest shopping malls in the world, and loves to be in the limelight.

- She's fought back from a near-career ending leg break due to a novice skater colliding with her while she had the music and was doing a run through.

Kaetlyn's shown Canadians that she's a fierce competitor. It certain that she doesn't think that she's at the limit of her potential.
