Sergei Voronov

Yeah, the Nationals should be very interesting. I hope with all my heart Sergei can keep the momentum going. I wish him to go to the Europeans (let alone Olympics), especially since I'll be there to cheer him on. :hap57:

I was looking at the protocols again and he left some points on the table with only 1 Level 4 in his FS and the 2ft on the 2nd quad. So I don't think he's maxed out yet (not sure if he can upgrade the jumps at this point...I think for him, he'd rather be confident that he can skate a program clean than take any chances). I know he's never got PCS like that before and some will say it's too high, but they can't blame it on homecooking here and he had no major errors in either program, so I don't find it outrageous. It's really good to see him getting some respect after all this time.

I just had time to watch Sergei'NHK programs. And, waooh... they are really great ! :luv17:
Congratulations ! :hap10:

Concerning the scores : of course, Silverfoxes, they could be higher.
But, you know what ;) :
* for the SP : the scores are really close to Sergei's personal bests, that he had at the 2014 Rostelecom Cup, and his 2017 NHK PCS are even better
* for the LP : he had his personal bests last week end ! :hap10:
So... :yahoo:

lmao why did I check the CBC vid
obv they said that he was nothing special:laugh:
so predictable

glad that the Japanese crowd & the judges know better :love:

Oh yeah, he beat his overall PB by 19+ points, that's amazing on its own. I just want to see him go even higher :) It's tough with only one stable quad...but I think his team is really smart, and being able to skate clean with what he has may be his best weapon.

Ugh, CBC. NA commentators in general are dreadfully biased and awful (except for Ted Barton!)

Hey all! A bit late, but anyway: a few words from Yulia after Sergey's SP - maybe someone will be interested. Yulia praised him much (she didn't like his costume though), told that when they were training together under Eteri's guidance, she was surprised that for the first time after he came he almost didn't jump quads during training. Later he changed his approach to trainings. While she was speaking, Sergey started to send regards: "hi everyone who comments, Eurosport guys, I know that you are watching, Yulja, Adyan, hi everybody". Yulia interrupted herself in the middle of a phrase and asked Denis (co-commentator) surprisingly "What? What did he say?". Denis replied that he said hello to everybody. Yulia objected that Sergey called somebody by names, but she didn't hear that properly.
Maybe someone has the video itself? Yulia spoke longer, but I can't recall the rest of her speech :(

An interview with Sergey after NHK: odd questions, good answers. Any correction of translation is appreciated :)

-Tell me, what does a person think when he wins his first GP at 30?
-Surely, I am happy. Telling about the age... Your mind is completely different at 30. That's an advantage, I think. You interpret ups and downs completely different. As an adult.
-What do you mean under "as an adult"?
-You know, when you win at 17, 15, your emotions are completely different comparing with when you skate on the top level for years.
-And when do you treasure medals more - at the age of 30 or 17?
-That's not quite a proper question. Both are valuable, but all in good time.
-Did the fact that Yuzuru Hanyu withdrew before SP have an influence on you?
-No. I saw how he got injured. Such a pity! You know, injury is the worst thing that can occur with an athlete.
-How have you seen Hanyu's injury? Have you been training with him on ice?
-No, we were in different groups. I returned back to the arena to make some flexibility exercises, and he has just started his training. So everything has happened about my ears.
-Was it unpleasant?
-Surely! Hanyu's leg was bent so hard, that I thought: I wish he could stand after that. It was clear that it has been really hurtful for him. Furthermore, in the beginning of the Olympic season - absolutely out of season. You only can sympathise.
------
-You performed both programms in Osaka without evident mistakes, including 3 quads. Were you pleasantly surprised or was it supposed to be that way?
-Why do I have to be surprised? I do them in such way on trainings, so no surprises.
-You received 15 points and pretty good chances to reach Grand Prix Final. But you have the second Grand Prix event, in the USA. What do you think about the event standing?
-There are no weak athletes at Grand Prix. That's not just words, but my opinion. The fact that the event is the latest in the series doesn't matter - I used to skate at the latest events quite often. I have never been to Lake-Placid before. But I know that the place is beautiful, emblematic. I haven't asked myself about standing, still "recover" myself from Japan. Furthermore, there is almost no time till Lake-Placid. You just need to prepare, to go out and to do what you have to do.
-Do you count on fighting for the place in the Olympic team seriously? ( :palmf: ) Or you haven't asked yourself this question yet as well?
-What do you mean under "seriously"? Is there other ways? Not seriously? At the age of 30?
-I agree. But your calender is quite busy: Lake-Placid in 2 weeks, then, if you succeed, in 2 more weeks, Grand Prix Final, and almost right afterwards - National championship, which will influence much on choosing the members of the Olympic team. What is your main goal right now? To qualify to Pyonchang?
-The main goal... Well, surely, I am not going to disregard Olympics. Qualifying to the national team, not only to Pyonchang, but always, is a hard deal. There will be a fight. There is no question of lack of seriousness.
-----
-Nathan Chen won at Rostelecom cup, where he bet Hanyu, who withdrew from NHK. Is this young guy already capable to win everybody?
-First of all, Hanyu needs to cure his injury. I wish him to do this as soon as it's possible. Nathan has a great coach, clever, reasonable - Rafael Arutunian. I also used to skate under his guidance. Chen's progress is not accidental. There are not many fortuities in sport. Yuzuru's injury is a fortuity, but Nathan's progress is not. For the second season he jumps the most difficult quads: flip, lutz, loop. That's not a fortuity.
-Mikhail Kolyada interchanges brilliant performances with failures. A great SP in China was preceded with falls in Moscow.
-Misha is our national team leader. Everybody says about it. It brings extra responsibility. I guess he feels it. Furthermore, quad lutz. In China it was amazing! And then he fell. It's easy to criticise someone, especially sitting on the couch.
-But I don't criticise, I just try to understand.
-I didn't mean you. There are so many critics after each failure. Misha has worked a lot, it will lead to stability for sure. There will be a good result of this work. It should be.
-The list of men-skaters at Skate America is pretty tough: Chen, Rippon, Jin, Kovtun. Chen is favourite here, obviously, but all the rest of the skaters are approximately on the same level this season. Who is the most "dangerous" among them?
-Each of them can show a good performance with several quads. It depends on who will have enough strength and nerves, as well as who worked much. As usual in sport.
-----
-Just in two weeks you "jump" from Japan to the USA - and performing again. Won't acclimatization be a problem for you? Or have you already learnt how to cope with it?
-I feel normal about it. USA - ok, USA. Japan - ok, Japan. On the contrary, you should feel joy of it.
-Are you jested about your age? Say, does anybody call you "granddad"?
-"Granddad"? No, not this way. Sometimes they call me veteran, but you are the first one to call me granddad.
-But I didn't call you that way. I just asked whether you are called such way.
-Yes, you are right (Sergey laughs). You know, it's funny for me when they call me veteran. I am not a veteran. War veterans are highly respected people. I am not one of them. Fortunately, unfortunately, I don't know. But at 30 life just begins, believe me.
-3 years ago you were a participant of Grand Prix Final and became a bronze medalist there. What is it, Grand Prix Final?
-It is a cool event. Extremely interesting. You never can imagine the final standings. But it's early for me to talk about Final. I still have Skate America ahead.
-What do you think about the latest doping stories with Russian athletes? It can be such way - you are qualified to the Olympic team and then lose the opportunity to perform in Pyonchang.
-That's a difficult question. Yes, there is no place for doping in sport, as well as in politics. Try to understand me, athletes work hard for Olympics, 4, 8 years, but because of politics they are thrown away. Absurd, I think.

@Jenek thank you so much for the translation. Great interview. Sergey comes across as straightforward and honest in his answers. He has no problem
saying what he feels and not sugar coating anything. I particularly liked his comments about being called granddad and veteran.
He also seems to have a great sense of humor.

Fingers crossed for him at SA that he does well and makes GPF. GO Sergey!

He always seems to be that down-to-earth no nonsense guy. What you see is what you get. I couldn't think of a better personality trait. Good for him.
I'll keep shouting all the way through the SA comp and wish him all the best of luck. Wouldn't it be wonderful, if he'd make it to Nagoya? :cheer:

Такого никому не пожелаешь, даже врагам.
His idiomatic speech will cause him problems.
(We have recently discussed his another phrase from an interview, supposedly mistranslated.)

dante, I decided to skip this phrase – mistranslation in this case can be serious  But agree about his idiomatic speech!

I think keeping it real when faced with so many utterly stupid questions, is quite an achievement. I think he wouldn't mince his words for anyone. That's what the fed can't stand. Someone who does his own thing :cool2:

Tara & Johnny are nice too.
sometimes they are yep
helps that Johnny is a rusophile  in an ocean of russophobes he shines like a light!

great interview!!
Wish him LOTS of luck!
He so deserves to have an excellent seasoN!!:clapper:

Another good interview with Goncharenko. Most of it is about Sergei. She really polished him into a diamond :) She says he has a pretty good 4Lo, but they don't want to overload him by trying to add it to the program, as I understand it. I am very glad that they aren't taking unnecessary risks, but I would love to see that 4Lo someday.

So happy for Sergey! He hasn't shown and said evetything yet. He'll amaze us in the future many times.
Congratulations for your bronze medal and a ticket to the Final! :gclap: :gclap: :gclap:

Yeah, I'm totally over the moon that he's in the final. Very few deserve it as much as he does. Good on ya, Sergei! :yes2:

Congrats to Sergei for winning the Bronze Medal and making the GPF. His reaction in the K&C when his score came up was fabulous!
He has a lot of fight in him. Fingers crossed that he has success for the rest of the season!
