Sergei Voronov

Fun quote from Voronov in the Feb. issue of International Figure Skating Magazine regarding his work with Raf. "I was working with Rafael Arutunyan when he was still living in Moscow. I was 10 years old. He taught me to do the 2A and to do it in a way that I would be able to do the 3A later on. Looking at Nathan and Adam, I am a little bit envious in a good sense that they are working with Rafael. And when I see him it is a kind of nostalgic feeling."

I don't think I knew that he had worked with Raf. Learning something new every day!!!

Inna Gontcharenko left ZSKA and might decide to coach abroad (she already has offers):

She refuses to give reasons in detail, but she says she thinks it’s impossible to continue working with lack of support by the club and the figure skating federation.

I wonder what this will mean for Sergei? First, how can he continue training? Ice time at ZSKA is related to the coach, so if Gontcharenko left, where can he train now? And will he move with her or look for another coach (with chances of any top coach agreeing to coach him being very slim considering his age and lack of support by his own fed)?

I by the way wonder if Gontcharenko’s decision has been also partly connected with the treatment of Sergei by his fed this season. :bang:

I could imagine her going to the US, taking Sergei with her. Maybe Rafa has some capacity for them? Just thinking... It wouldn't be the worst case scenario :)

I guess she'll go to China... Chinese Federation has always wanted to have a Russian Coach...

Where are her skaters practicing now? Are they no longer allowed to train at CSKA since she left? So many questions...

I know Max ended his season already, but Sergei could still go to the Cup of Russia final and possibly Worlds (I know they would prefer not to send him, but we don't know what condition the other top 3 will be in by then, he could have a chance).

I'm so glad to hear he won't retire yet! He made great strides this season - it was so special to have him podium on the Grand Prix and make the Final, I was so thrilled at Skate America. He's so competitive still, and such a pleasure to watch, always. I love his exhibitions/show skating, too, so I won't be terribly hurt when he does make the decision to retire, and I support him, but I'm so glad to get another season of good competition out of him!

Apart from continuing competing the other great news is that Sergei will stay at CSKA. On Russian boards there were rumors that he might train with Buyova, which I consider at least not unlikely. If he was allowed to continue training at CSKA after Gontcharenko left – that would have been decided by Buyanova. I’m very happy Sergei stays at CSKA. They usually create opportunities for their skaters once their eligible career is over. I would love to see Sergei working as a coach at CSKA one day. I hope the next one or two seasons (next OG are probably not in reach) will be at least as successful as this one. :)

Maybe we will hear something official after Worlds. I can't say I am a Buyanova fan, but he is a grown man who probably doesn't need a lot of guidance at this point, so if he can stay at CSKA and enjoy the perks of being in her team, it's of course much better than being coachless or drifting around in some uncertain situation. I hope he will have Misha Ge choreograph for him again. Really a pity that we can't see him again this season. Dima and Sergei would have been a dream team for Worlds.

I still think it's wrong not to include Sergei in Worlds, especially given that Olys weren't exactly that successful....

I love the idea of him staying with CSKA, but sometimes I find myself secretly hoping he somehow trains with Smirnov (he already helped him out once). Yeah, he's a grown up, long enough in the business to know what and who's best for him. Whatever he decides, I'm happy to back it up.

That was great news indeed. I'm not so sure whether Buyanova is the right person for him, but I'm super glad he found a coach and can stay at CSKA. He knows what he's doing, he's a fighter and I'm with him all the way.

Here is a lovely Russian interview with Sergei by Tatiana Flade:
www.fsrussia.ru/intervyu/3732-serge...-zhelanie-prodolzhat-i-eto-samoe-glavnoe.html

The headline is: I have the strength, the health and the desire to continue and that's the most important thing.

In a nutshell he tells that he helps to train little kids in his leisure time, it’s interesting to stand on the other side of the board. He had much time to make his decision, listened to himself and not to others and he is happy that he had the possibility to make this decision on his own. He is thankful to Buyanova that she took him in her team and together with her group he will go to the training camp in Italy. He will have two new programs but they are not ready yet, though the music has already been chosen. He got satisfaction from his work late, later than others, but he wants to work. If one loves his work, he does it with pleasure. He wants to skate at as many competitions at possible as this way it’s easier, e.g. to get comfortable with new programs.

Sergei is just such a nice genuine guy, even if I would not like his skating (at the end it's also always a matter of taste), I would still root for him.

Thank you for the translation @ewdokia. Sergei has always been a sentimental favorite of mine. I was so happy for
his success last season and wished he had made the Olympic team. His programs are always different and a little
quirky in a good way.

2 GP allotments for next season : Skate America & NHK Trophy. Great ! :hap10:
