You asked me whether I’m a kind coach, I am kind because I’m understanding, but I’m not kind in the sense that you can do whatever you want.

I really want a Day in Life at Champery type of documentary. A lot of people say Stepen is just a feel-good coach, not strict enough... blah blah blah. As mentioned in the interview, he spends time on things (figures, edges, long lines) that everybody now tries to skip.

Pretty sure the reason those things are skipped cause they just aren't worth enough points.

In the rules they're worth a good deal of points. Practically those points are most awarded depending on a skater's status (politicking). If the skater is an anointed one they get the points, if they're not they don't get the points. So, none of them have an advantage in working hard for nib.
Lately (2021 GP series) I read the detailed comparison between the StSq of two Women representing the same country, one correct with two minor errors which should have got her StSq3 3.0 (rare occurrence of only one possible score because of a cap on an otherwise very good element) and she got less, the other one with many major errors and a deep lack of edgework etc which was worth StSq1 0-1.0 and she got StSq4 4+.
I have hopes that all this poor scoring will come to an end and then Stepen's work will give its rewards in scoring. I believe Shoma is already getting some rewards in expression means for instance.

That performance is a jewel, isn't it?! I remember several of Shoma's comments -- he said he really, really didn't want to fall during their skate. He talked about how Stephane is so good at everything he does! Someone joked and said they are so in sync with each other that maybe they ought to think about skating pairs together! :laugh2:
Oh, you knew it! He really must not have wanted to fall! haha.. If I were a man skater, definitely I would not want to do with Stephane such serious one-on-one collaboration! Definitely, you are compared with Stephane, it's tough! Shoma's presence on the ice was not overtaken by Stephane, it was amazing! Their sync was really superb! The finish is out of this world. Last night, I watched the video again and again :drama:

Majority of the us (myself included) have no idea what constitute a level 4 step sequence, and thus there was never any outcry over incorrect levels/scoring (your example of the 2 women) compared to the constant complains about unfair UR's or edge calls. Btw, can you tell us why Shoma only received level 3 Stsq in both programs?

I love listen to Kurt Browning commentary on CBC, as he often fawns over the nuances and details, and describing how certain steps are very difficult even though X-skater makes it look easy. Kurt must be a fan of Stepen's work. 👍

We know for sure he is a fan of Shoma's work. A direct quote from Kurt:

"Look at those skating skills. Look at that core -- so solid. Even with the quad flip, it's still the skating skills and musicality that catch your attention the most...He is like a nuclear blast -- small but powerful. With his ability to take his body off axis left and right, he is a bit of a magician...That young lad just speaks skating. And his intricacies with the blade and the manipulation of how he turns left and right and changes directions. His concentration going down through the leg into the blade is kinda like Scott Hamilton -- he's never not talking to the blade."

A step sequence level is determined on a number of listed elements and features, such as one-footed skating, mohawks, choctaws, brackets, twizzles, turns in both directions, etc. Typically, the tech panel will look for those elements, and if you don't do them for long enough or they're not fully executed you can lose a level. It's similar to a spin with a certain number of features earns you more levels. You can read the whole thing here (step sequences start on page 3)

I would be myself quite unable to pick the errors. An excellent skater deep in interpretation is prone to a little hop here or there and then comes the Level 3 (unless TP don't see it or choose not to see it), because missing one step makes that the required number of different difficult steps is not reached. Of course Shoma, with his heartfelt musicality, is prone to such little errors.
Figureskatingandrainbows sent the ISU reference link.

Which event was this quote from? I need to watch it.

Also, your avatar!!

May I ask? I have been away from FS world, so I don't know the change of rule.
The starting order of free skating is according to short program order? There is no lottery between free and short as before?

It's a covid safety thing (one less draw), but people are thinking it might stay on past this season because it's logical
