Thanks. Such a shame about those medals. Just one problem out of many at Ghetto Prix Final 2016 :disapp: But I am in the business of thinking of solutions. At the very least the back of the medal is blank. And while this is a source for additional ridicule, they can actually go crazy there. I suggest finding a coaster and gluing it on.

the TV commentator there said the same thing.

I wanted to add to the accolades of Shoma's FS at gpf, and his skating in general! Very few skaters could pull off a program to that music like he does. Brilliant. I hope he's not pushing himself to the point of serious injury, though. I got concerned when the B.esp commentator, Chris Howarth, who coaches at the Chicago rink that Shoma trains at in the US, mentioned that he has constant injuries in his back, knees, etc, but just continues to push on. The technical demands really take a toll on these young skaters' bodies.

I felt really bad when I heard Chris' comment. He also mentioned his hips. I think he was saying it's just a question of how much does he hurt on any given day. When I think of how many hundreds of times he has done the cantilever, is it any wonder he has back problems?! He is a bit reckless, but I really want him to still be around for the 2022 Olympics (even tho he'll be an old man of 24 at that point). I also think that falling again and again for 5 years while he tried to learn the 3A probably didn't do his body any favors. Please skating Gods, watch over him.:handw:

I honestly thought there was some delay with the REAL medals and these plastic medals were just a substitute. :curse: The other thing that looked pretty bad was the seats in the arena. No backs on the seats?! Oh my goodness! Imagine sitting in those for 3 days. I'm hoping Vancouver in 2018 will be LOTS better!

I thought so too, Arriba. I was kinda hoping, that the real medals would get mailed to the winners afterwards, but considering all of the other budget problems they seemed to have, it's not gonna happen I guess. It's not surprising though when you look at how the french skating federation has been treating sponsors in the recent past. I think it's a good thing they don't get to hold any more major comps like GPF, Euros or Worlds in the near future.

I love your suggestion Danibellerika, at least put these ugly plastic disks to some use.

TSL's This and That has some interesting comments regarding Shoma's GPF. I know Dave isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I thought some of this showed some good insights. His guest is Jonathan Beyer, whom I understand is an opera singer & figure skating enthusiast. Here is some of their conversation - pardon if this is already old news to everyone.

D: So how about Shoma Uno, this little pocket rocket who is like the "little engine that could" this year. He overperforms and goes out and nails it to the best of his ability.

J: He skates like it's the last skate of his life each time, and his coach has the same enthusiasm every time. Where is he getting that energy from?! I miss his modern dance program from last season. That's when I fell in love. I was over the moon about his modern program. When he does that type of program, he is better than anybody, IMO. When he does generic, beautiful programs, he is just good.

D: I really like the free program, even with the screaming woman! I really enjoy it.

(Then they make a joke about Milva sounding like a Disney villainess, but I couldn't catch it)

D: The latter half of the program to me is so strong choreographically, to where the other men just have generic programs, and he has actual structure and fire. And the way he ends with the headless spin is so strong, and his footwork to the other men--

J: And I'm sorry, isn't that a whole prerequisite for interpretation and choreography? -- proportion? That's what that is. It's not him doing crossovers for two minutes and then backloading his program.

D: His weakness to me is still that landing position where we see him turn out of those jumps.

J: He does this crazy angle on every landing.

D: They were talking on Eurosport about his falls and how injured he is. If he's trying to check, he has to fight those landings more than any other skater, where he is just trying to hold the edge based on his technique. That may be what prevents him from being 1st, instead of being 2nd or 3rd. I always wonder if he can be 100% consistent for two programs, to be the World Champion. I think he has everything else to be there. The quad flip is incredible.

J: And that final 3-jump combo -- it's amazing!

D: Yes, it's his last program on earth and he's going out to win it!

J: And don't worry - there's a cantilever!

D: He excites me to no end every time. I thought he'd end in 4th rather than 3rd.

J: I had him in 4th. And missing the combo in the short, I thought he was toast...This was a pretty exciting competition. There were some pretty stellar men. It doesn't always happen that way.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHOMA!!!
He's 19! :yahoo: And it's just so phenomenal to think of how he was when I started watching him at 13-14 versus now!

Hi everyone! I'm quite late to the party but since I attended GPF last week-end I thought I could make a little post on my live experience :)

I was already a Shoma fan when I arrived in Marseille but even more now !! This kid is amazing. Let me explain.
I had the chance to seat in the third row for the Men SP (it was total luck, because my ticket was basically for the second category, in the balcony, but I met a Spaniard who had nobody by his side so I could seat in the so-called Carré Or). I didn't have a Japanese flag to cheer for Shoma and Yuzuru but fortunately there was next to me a very nice Japanese fan who didn't dare to wave her big flag alone, so we raised it together for Shoma :peace:.
During the warm up we were quite nervous because Shoma didn't look confident, and tense. But when came is SP.... It was incredible. I was just captivated by him. Even with just his opening pose, he has that presence, that charisma... When he landed the quad flip I screamed and thought 'Yes, he's going to do it!'. Well, everyone knows what happened later, but it didn't prevent me from being hypnotised by Shoma's skating. His speed, his SS, his commitment, at the end of the program I was like "What ? already finished ? No please, go on!" We were all very worried by his ankle but fortunately it wasn't serious.
On Friday, I went to the Men practice (I needed to take my dose of men skating lol). Talking about Shoma only, it was a heartbreaking moment. He was reapeating his quads, falling, making a new round, jumping, falling.... I was starting to be very concerned by his condition, but I heard he couldn't get enough sleep because of the jet lag, then we thanked god Men Free was only on Saturday. At this practice, "only" the 3A was going well, but it was enough to relieve us a bit, at least about his ankle.
On saturday, Shoma's practice was waaaaaaay better. he did land some very good quads, not everything was on point, but still a huge step up from the past days.
The Men FP was such a HUGE moment. The arena was ready to explode. Plus there was that introduction of the skaters before the warm up, with that epic music announcing the Battle of the Titans
And then the unbelievable happened. Shoma skated sincerely the BEST and the most beautiful program of the night. I decided at this moment that he had this season the best free program among the Men. It's truly a masterpiece. Every movement is in perfect accordance with the music. The musicality of the choreo is something that impressed me a lot. I think it's a very difficult music to skate to, but Shoma found the essence of the piece and the right interpretation. I don't think he put a foot wrong during his performance (except for the first 4T ofc). He had that commanding presence that said "Hey did you think I was lost ? I'm here, you haven't seen yet what I can do". I was on my feet before the last spin ended. I was so moved by the performance that I couldn't stop clapping my hands and screaming (I think I just shouted "I love you" when he bowed at us :slink:). And everyone seemed to agree with me. During the 3 days, the audience was really warm to him.
Finally, I was so happy that he got to medal, even if he could have had silver in my opinion.

Last of my "Shoma experience" is after the competition, I was with my friends, we waited the skaters after press conference behind the rink near the door they were leaving by (what an adventure to pass through the security men but it was worth it lol). We waited them with two japanese journalist who took us an interview while waiting like "What did you think about Shoma and Yuzuru, why do you love them, what are you going to say if you see them..." it was so funny and dear, I think all Japan saw me fangirling in front of a camera ? :dance2: Finally, Shoma came out. I couldn't resist and asked him to take a picture. He was adorable, very kind to the fans waiting there, and I offered him some chocolates from my city, he seemed very pleased, so I think it finished to make my day :o:

This concludes my experience at GPFinal! Sorry for the looong post and for my approximate English!

Your english is great Pika! Your report made me almost feel like I was there. I was so worried after reading all those reports about his practices. I'd never had thought he would be able to do such a fantastic program after reading all this. When he landed that 3A right to the cue of the music...it all fits together. I adore his free now, and I disliked this music before. He made me love it. (And I totall agree that he should've gotten silver. I think Nathan Chen's free wasn't better than Shoma)

Thank you for your detailed report Pika! It is always nice to hear a review from someone who is actually in the arena at the competition.

Yes Shoma had the winning FS for me too!

Happy 19th birthday, Shoma:love: I hope this is the beginning of your greatest, most wonderful year ever.

He shares the same birthday as lots of skaters. Happy birthday to Sei (21), Tatsuya (14), Riku(15?), Liza (20), Amelie (28), Evgania (22) and Nikolai (41), too.

From today's practice(See comment with video on birthday message)
4F, 4T+3T, 3Lo+3T/ 3A+3T, 4T+2T, 3Lz+3T, 3A+1Lo+3F, 3S+3T

He really seems to feel sting of defeat without third combination. I've never imagined I could see his 3Lz+3T someday before. 3S+3T is also new to me.
