^^^Oh no - I hear the number "yon", so I'm cringing thinking it must be a quad question/answer. Also there's a lot going on with that shirt. :laugh2: Would love to get a closer look.

When shoma was leaving for Korea, he said he was planning 4loop at beginning of 4
Loop! Im so worried about shoma… :hopelessness:

Yeah, beginning figure skating is really good experience. Every time, i'm getting the fulfilment, like "oh, i learn to do one foot skating! etc. and the biggest thing is thanks to it I could come to confirm my pure love for figure skating and skaters who generated and are generating wonderful performances.
And now, I realize why yuzu is so much proud of and cherishes Japan jersey, the national flag… the meaning of home country gets much heavier when you are away from there. All skaters are competing with the burden of their countries in their youth… I cant help but support them more and more. :ghug:

Hello everyone, I'm still new to this forum and I haven't posted much yet. However, I'm a Shoma fan and I'd like to join the discussion and ask something.

Does anybody know why Shoma doesn't do 4S in competition yet? I understand that some skaters prefer toe jumps and that would explain his 4T and 4F. But introducing 4Lo without having 4S? It seems very strange to me (but I'm not an expert).

It's very interesting to see how much skaters can differ regarding their jump preferences. I'm Czech and I know that Michal Březina always preferred 4S over 4T and in past few years he hasn't landed (in competition) any other quad than the Salchow.


Anyway, good luck to Shoma! I hope he finally hits the 100 points mark in SP and 200 in FP.

I think Shoma is not good at or does not like Salchow jump so much as he is using 3F instead of 3S for the combination of 3 jumps which others do with 3S usually.

Edit: Actually, I read about Shoma's not preferring Salchow in his interview 2-3 years ago. It was Ryuju Hino who advised that 3S can be replaced with 3F in the 3-jump combo, and Ryuju showed before Shoma that it was possible. In general, it is said to be a more difficult combination with higher base value (lol)

As you say, skaters have their likes and dislikes in jumps irrelevant to the general difficulty level. I heard Daisuke Takahashi once confessed that he honestly did not like toe loop jump (said to be the easiest jump), and he wished there would be no toe loop so that they could avoid quad jumps (at that time almost all quad jumps were executed by toe loop). And also I think Yuzuru does not like flip jump so much, and that's why he has not included 4F, I heard before that he was not planning to include 4F (he used to got edge error frequently with his flip, although it is no longer believable).

I suppose this should come as no big surprise that he'll include the quad loop. I just wonder how soon he'll start working on the quad salchow. He said during a press conference that he knows for sure he'll never do the quad lutz. We already know he HATES the triple lutz jump. In fact he has said he'd rather do a quad instead of a triple lutz. I support him no matter what he does. Just hope he doesn't get too reckless and hurt himself.

Hi Jenda -- Welcome to the friendly Shoma thread...I remember already last year at 4CC, Shoma was practicing the 4Lo more than he practiced his programs. My theory was that he wanted to be sure that Jin knew he was working on the 4Lo. :dumb: Seems to me that someone suggested to him that he work on that jump. Maybe was it Stephane? Not sure. The 100 SP and 200 FS numbers are great goals. It would be wonderful if he makes those numbers! :rock: Let's hope!

Welcome to GS Forum, Jenda. :) It's so nice to have you here. Hope you are enjoying visiting the forum, esp. Shoma's friendly thread as Arriba says. :yes:

As for his planning to put a 4L in LP, I just hope no injuries for him... Good luck to Shoma at 4CC! :yay:
 
If I could I would award him medals for just simply landing triple jumps and enjoy his skating for many years to come. But I do definitely understand where he is coming from. Just look in the prediction threads. Shoma is often out of the top 3 for a lot of people, and I'm sure he wants to medal at this years World. He has to have these difficulties, to stay competitive. He doesn't want to be left behind. I think quad jumps are fantastic, and one of the reasons I love men's figure skating. Then I always prefer the skaters who feel the music, like Shoma does. I will cheer him on. Only a few days to go! Oh, and welcome Jenda. We're a friendly bunch!

I was just thinking, Shoma doesn't pop his jumps very often, right? From what I remember Yuzu, Javi and Patrick pop more often. That could be a bit of an advantage.

I can't wait for all the upcoming competitions! It's gonna be epic battle!

Your words are so true, although I would be happy with no jumps and just to watch his beautiful spins and footwork. And no matter what our predictions have been, he has had 5 competitions and has 3 golds, a silver, and a bronze. So he has medaled at every competition so far. Not always "pretty" competitions, but he still got the job done. Predictions this time? I can't even think about it! It's mind boggling! Maybe we should just roll the dice instead! :handw:

I couldn't find the article and don't remember it exactly, but I read somewhere it's because his muscle of left foot is weaker than his right one. Loop is his favorite jump, and salchow is not. He started practicing 4S first，but perhaps didn't go well. Then Stephan advised him to practice 4Lo during national training camp last season.
Mao has/had similar jump preferences for edge jumps to him, and she didn't like salchow because it was overrotated too much.
 
Shoma's practice reports are starting to come. During the short program: 4F (turnout), 4T3T, 3A. Outside of SP: 4Lo, attempted 2A4T (hand down) and 3A4T (fall).

You're correct, it was his least favourite jump for some bizarre reason, while the 3F (and the 3A) had always been his best. That's why he attempted the 4F at several competitions in 2010/2011. But in the end his success rate on the 4T was still higher! Well, he actually only landed the 4F successfully once in practice. It was kinda appropriate, that "nephew" Shoma ended up to be the first one to succeed with it in competition. :cool: Him and Shoma also share not being exactly specialized in executing the Lutz with a clean edge. (They really have quite a few characteristics in common. :laugh:)

According to the article about the practice today, shoma seems calm (although this is the pre-olympic competition) and just keeps concentration.
He says he feels usual and he has no special feelings.

I have a mixed feelings about his quads. I really want Shoma to stay healthy and he has unique sense of artistry which is one of the point Daisuke admires him about. And he may be not a born to be jumper like Nathan as Arriba said. But at the same time, to see his interview in the TV crip, I can’t help but realize that he’s an athlete, besides, a top of top of this sport! Haha, ive almost forgotten it for his pretty face like a doll! He wants to do as much as he can do now to win and follow the quad era. He’s also a man just keeping competing… To see his attitude, I cant say anything..
