Not surprised to learn this actually. When asked why skaters from Nagoya has had so much success, Shoma's training mate Kanako Murakami, who also hails from Nagoya. gave this answer: "The mothers in Aichi are very enthusiastic," she said. "Some of them are very scary actually. It's not just the coaches who crack the whip but those mothers." (http://www.straitstimes.com/sport/olympics-scary-mums-powering-japanese-figure-skating) As Shoma grows into his strength, I think he will need less "push" from his mother.

Looking forward to seeing Shoma at WTT, not just to see him skate but also see him let his hair down interacting with the other members of Team Japan and the other skaters. :)

Good JOB! He looked so cute....at the beginning I was worried as Shoma looked kind of sad/scared to me. Idk, if something happened backstage....but then Fluffy worked her magic. She just shines and helps to keep that positive mood. I'm so happy!

Interview after sp

OMG, shoma is so hard on himself and calm.

In response to the congratulation of 1st by the announcer, he says he intentionally chose 4t2t and escaped from 4t3t (For him, it is what he felt ashamed of).
And he says he was able to get such a performance although he was not in the good concentration mode. In a positive view, that was good.
Further, about tomorrow, he just wants not to bother the team and try to achieve the performance which is at least the same level as today.

If you watch his face after the 4t2t you see a little grimace or disappointment. Apparently he had a 4t3t planned and was disappointed he did not complete that jump.
You received a great technical score and I believe the highest PC score and you are in 1st place, so don't be so hard on yourself Shoma
have some fun and be proud of yourself! :hap57:

And actually, I had a little cringe moment at Shoma's post skate comment, though I'm sure it wasn't intentional. Namely he said something like: "I'll try my hard not to cause trouble [for the team]." Which is very normal Japanese humble attitude, but when your team mate and biggest rival just had a program like that, that also resulted in the team losing quite a few points - I think normally, they were guaranteed 1st and 2nd, in whichever order - it's a bit... unfortunate.

Above is a comment I found in the Yuzu thread. Could anyone find the video where Shoma said that? And didn't he skate before Yuzu and how come his post-skate comments have anything to do with Yuzu? And he said exactly the same thing to Matsuoka-san in the Japan team interview several days ago - that he didn't want to be a weight for the team and that kind of thing...

The comment does not make sense to me either for the reasons you stated. I don't know if it is true or just speculation skating drama but references have been made
that something was going on backstage before Shoma skated.

As you said, in some interviews befoe wtt, shoma just kept saying that he didnt want to cause any trouble for the team. It's normal. At workplace, at school, in everything, japanese culture basically needs such an ethic, "not to bother other people".
Shoma's comment is not at all concerened about yuzu. Shoma's stance with WTT is focusing on team, not indivisual. That's all.

Yeah, no way, Shoma skated before Yuzuru and that phrase was in no way connected to Yuzu's skate. Shoma said that he didn't do well with 3T in practice today and decided to do 2T lest he flop the whole jump or even the whole combo. So he went for the safer version, especially considering that his score would affect the team's placement. Source

He did really well! I thought he wasn't as satisfied with himself as he was after CDP (lmao) and Worlds – remember how he eagerly runs on the ice after both of those! – and I think my absolute favourite performances are still those, but it was wonderful, and I'm really happy that once he tackled the SP he was able to deliver such beautiful performances one after another.

Also, absolute cuteness overload, look at Shoma going for a hug (!!!) with Yuzuru of his own volition (!!!): here and here, my heart just melted ;____;

I don't get such comments either. But the number of such comments are increasing and I feel that it will increase more as Shoma on his rise.

As for something happening backstage before Shoma skated, I saw that comments in the competition thread based on the intense look Yuzu had. But in my opinion, Yuzu always looks intense before competition. That a usual look on him. Nothing different this time. He is just a bit off today and there is no need to read much into that.

I thought Yuzuru looked angry. Poor him. I'm a Yuzuru fan but usually I don't visit his fanfest often. It's moving too fast, and well...there are reasons. I don't think any comments from Shoma are in any way towards Yuzuru's performance, positive or negative. Usually you don't comment. It's all about your own.

I also found the Shoma accusations way out of left field, but with the new rivalry the media is trying to stir up, it's got some on edge. Thank you for the clarification, Hamaguri! As a fan of both I am dreading next season already just for this stuff alone, let alone the skating they'll produce which will be another roller coaster. All I know is that both work hard everyday to be #1 and as far as I'm concerned the sport is richer for it. Doesn't mean there isn't mutual respect there. It's just too bad the media will try to spin a rivalry instead of celebrating the talent they have while they have it. They don't have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the men like they do with the ladies.

ETA: The anniversary of Prince's death (which is tomorrow) added additional pressure for Yuzu to want to get it right. In the K&C he was saying sorry to Prince. As a Prince fan I am touched that he cares (I was in tears that day).

Yeah, I read that statement about Prince. Wonderful that Yuzuru did that SP, even if he was never really satisfied. If he didn't add the Loop he would've skated it clean, more than once, I'm sure.

To be honest, I don't know how you can stand to read the Yuzuru thread and remain calm Dani. I just read the last few pages because of the comment here, and...well...I cannot really go into what I'm feeling.

Yuzuru wins the WC = Shoma is overscored.
Shoma wins the SP at WTT = Shoma is the JFeds darling.
Shoma dares to criticize his OWN performance in an after-skate interview = Shoma is throwing shade at his teammate.

Well I think for the sake of both fanfest it's best to try to keep a positive atmosphere, but it can be hard to like multiple skaters. But if Yuzuru and Shoma can be mature enough, then the fans can too. The thread moves so fast though that I can certainly skip topics I don't want to discuss (though I felt compelled to say something today since it was in real time for me). And opinions about skating is one thing, but trying to make assumptions about someone by spinning a quote is different. I just think the off season will be helpful to cool off for everyone. But with this being the Olympic season coming up, I can't be sure we'll have that luxury. As for WC, while I wasn't personally bothered with Shoma's score, I was not happy about the GOEs given to Yuzuru (and it's not even about the score more so that I just think each jump should get the credit it deserves), but I can think that without thinking something should be taken away from someone else. I just want consistency from the same panel.

I am perfectly happy to say that I am a Yuzuru Hanyu and a Shoma Uno fan. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I came into figure skating fandom because I adored both Mao Asada and Yuna Kim, so for me, being a fan of two "rivals" (a media term, not something I'll ever care for) is normal and in no way an issue. It's good, because if one of them skates badly, the other might still skate well and it makes me feel better. I'm selfish, but there you go.
I really am genuinely sorry for Hanyu, I know how much he wanted this SP with the clean combo, but at the same time, job well done, Shoma! Boy, but I'll miss that gorgeous SP. :sad4:

I first came into skating with Evgeny Plushenko in 2001. I saw his 4/3/2 and it Blew. My. Mind. I saw Sasha Cohen too and was instantly impressed by her musicality, flexibility, and spins, and that she was training a quad sal and landing them in practice. I was an uber for both of them but I think I was more attached to Sasha. But soon after I became a Plush fan, I quickly learned about Yags. You want a rivalry, THAT'S the one. And then of course there was Michelle around when Sasha was around. But at the time I picked a side, and put my lot in with Plush (and I still preferred the look of his jumps). But we all know how everything panned out for them. Both have their accolades. There is room enough for everyone to taste some success I think. All skaters make their mark in their own way and it's wonderful. If there's one thing I learned from going to Worlds this year, it's that (well, I knew that before but the spirit of it is so live and well in person). I appreciate both Yags and Michelle more now than I did back then.
