Shoma Uno: 2014-2024

I'm going to say the quality that made me a fan of Shoma's: his intense fighting spirit. I love how he almost always attacks everything with that certain determination. Even when he skates to very gentle music, there's always that burning intensity there in the way in which he performs (and I really adore the contrast this presents when Shoma skates to gentle music). He just doesn't give up, no matter what happens. Such determination is extremely admirable in my opinion. I had to experience it in person in order for me to really understand it, but once I saw Shoma's fighting spirit for myself, I knew I had to become his fan...

This was a close second to my pick! I almost picked it, hahaha. The first competition I have ever followed Shoma in after the 2018 Olympics was the 2018 Worlds and his Turandot there still makes me really emotional because he was fighting so hard until the very last second of that program. I think his fighting spirit and determination is even more impressive when I remember the roller coaster of the last few years... It's probably easier to attack when he was younger and had nothing to lose, but Shoma showed that even when everything looked so bleak and so dark in his career, he's able to not just come back, but also show that he can still fight as hard as he can for every single point.

Does anyone know what made Itsuki want to open the YouTube channel about Toro, Emma and Barron? It’s a pretty awesome channel and it always makes me smile seeing the three of them running around, being playful and being cute when interacting with Shoma, Itsuki and Mrs. and Mr. Uno. I hope the channel stays for a long time to come.

Alright Shoma fans here is a question. If you had to pick just one thing you like about Shoma what would it be and why? For me it’s that he is always himself no matter what both on and off the ice. I respect him and support him always.
The one thing initially was just the way he moves on the ice, including the deep knees but also the sort of tension he maintains with his arm movements (it reminds my of my choir teacher in high school telling us to imagine we're stretching taffy to hold a long note without losing energy). I don't really understand how, but it's so mesmerizing! He caught my eye immediately when I saw him in his first senior Grand Prix, and the rest is history...

But my favorite thing now, even more than his skating, is just his character/personality. (So... Shoma is my favorite thing about Shoma?) He reminds me of me (except unfathomably athletic)--this calm and thoughtful presence with absolute chaos hiding within. I can't come up with the words to describe it better at the moment, but I also agree with everything everyone else said, lol.

@Figskater23, I also wanna know!

Small news clip. This summer, at ice show, TV broadcast kept taking his practice for 8 hours.! And they caught the moment of 4t3t. But at the very moment, the light was off and it became 4t3t in the dark😅

I would probably have to pick one thing about the skating and one thing about Sho the person. My favorite thing overall is his humility! He hasn't changed one bit in that regard since the guy I first saw in Oct., 2015. I still remember him speaking at the Worlds 2018 press conference (after he had skated hurt) and saying that not only did he like Nathan and Mikhail K. as skaters, he liked them as people. He is super competitive but still remembers the things in life that are important, like respect for his fellow skaters.

Okay Shoma fans here is another fun question. If you could hang out with Shoma for a whole day what would you do? I would definitely challenge him to a video game tournament. Not just any video game tournament. It would be one where he and I would have to play several rounds of a game of his choice and then one that I pick. I definitely think I could beat him! Other than that I would ask him to show me how to dance on the ice because I want to perform in an ice show one day and if I could play with Emma, Toro and Barron since they are so cute and they have a lot of dog toys.

I'm back home now. Jason was amazing!!!!!
Arriba I am curious to know, after seeing the top US men live this week, how they stack up compared to Shoma. Do you feel more or less confident about Shoma's chances in Beijing after seeing his rivals?

I would make him skate the Ladies in Lavender program 10 times and do those cool toe steps from DOMO multiple times. After that, I would have him introduce me to the Uno puppies.

His chances are good. Only my opinion, but I feel Nathan is the only American who will beat him, if Nathan stays healthy. He has been struggling a little with an injury is my understanding.

Heal that ankle Sho. Let's hope Demi-san and assistant physical therapist Emma chan work their magic. :cheer:

Welcome back! @Arriba627! I cannot express how I was happy to hear Jason joind Olympics member!

Mom had Ema's hair cut taking 3 hours!
Shoma is doing early morning practice considering Olympics schedule.

I’d like to skate with him!! Getting kind of like an on-ice perspective of him skating? Maybe I’d just wordlessly observe and analyze, or maybe I’d ask a few questions like what his thought process is while skating to music or how does he time every move to the beat haha. Maybe I could ask for a few pointers too (and maybe he’d laugh at me when I fall face first but it’s okay I understand 😆). Just sharing the ice with him would make me feel so honored.

(Sometimes, I wonder how the Chukyo SC members who ~kinda~ appear in his practice videos feel about being on ice with him, but then again maybe a Shoma Uno is just a regular occurrence for them.)

It would definitely involve a long walk with the dogs, chatting about pets and life in general. I could teach Shoma a few words in English in exchange for him teaching me some Japanese!

English lesson!
As an expat, I really realized the difficulty of speaking!

Actually, he is a top athlete (Olympics Silver medal!). But he really does not feel like that. As Arriba said, he is humble, his statements and attitude haven't changed. He moves forward step by step. To my joy, he will keep competing. Personally, I want ISU to change rules to limit the number of quads. I want to see longer skaters' lives. Several kinds of quads tend to lead to injury...
