A new "thing" at this year's NHK. A prize was given to the skater who skated the best EX..I believe it was thru an audience vote. Shoma won and told the crowd he has been working hard for 4 years to win this award. Looked like a fun thing.

JBPress article regarding the tech calls on Shoma's jumps at NHK. It is in Japanese but there is an English option.

Although I loved Shoma's free skate, he seemed a bit subdued afterwards, even before the scores came out. I can't really put my finger on it. I wonder if he is signalling that this is his final season. What does everyone else think? Am I reading too much into this?

Shoma comes into this season with questions about what competitions means for him, and what he is seeking from competitions since he doesn't want to focus on the points. My take on it is that he is currently in a different point of skating career compared to other skaters currently competing, and is in the process of taking in this experience to figure out what he feels and thinks about competitions.

Honestly, he's not a skater who makes a show after his skates aside from really special occasions so I don't particularly see anything different. He's just pretty calm about everything and less tense about the results. His programs this season both lean towards melancholic in nature so I think bursts of energy and excitement would also be out of place especially since he said he was focusing on expressing them this season. Especially that FS with how it's structured- any sudden increase of energy after the program wouldn't make sense if he really skated it with everything he has.

I think we can take his words that if he was to retire, he will not do it abruptly, since he has done some preparation for this season. But we need to keep in mind that he is taking his skating season by season, competition by competition. He already said he is not sure about 2026 Olympics and that's already quite near. So I think the end of his competitive career is close, it's just a matter of how he wants to wrap it up.

I saw him with headphones in his hands while he was circling the rink at the gala. I thought it was from a fan. Congratulations to Shoma.

I am a little disappointed that the powers that be or other sources are possibly signaling they are moving to other skaters and Shoma is aware and that has affected his demeanor when he's not skating. He never comments on being dinged for UR and because his technique has been questioned on his quads at times but he's been the way he is for all of these years and now all of a sudden? I'm sure he didn't expect it especially on home ice. But, that's sport. He has skated a lot worse but has still smiled but now he seems so serious and a little sullen. He must have a lot on his mind. It's good to hear that he will not just up and retire so he would at least have a farewell 'tour' of sorts when he makes the decision. On a brighter note, his FS will always be genius. I expect it to be more of the same against his competitors at GPF.

Ah... I'm not going so far as to say that Shoma would "at least" have a farewell tour of sorts. It can be that he will say he will have one last competition and that's it. Japan has a lot of ice shows opportunity so for Shoma it can be that things will not change much regarding skating after he retires (he can even be busier) and it's likely that he wouldn't consider his competitive retirement as some big event.

I am honestly not seeing any sullen demeanor from Shoma. He has always been a serious and reserved person, and he saves his smiles for the people he cares about and for his own time- he rarely smiles in front of a camera especially during interviews. When he has a question, he will ask, as he always does even in the previous seasons. I think he just mellowed this season. Last season was quite stressful as he won every competition, he took a break and came back with a different perspective on competitions.

^^^ Maybe not sullen but from his words in the interviews he was not to pleased for the calls on every
quad jump in his FS. Heck that would bother any skater. I can just imagine what was going through his
mind when he had a chance to look at his protocols. I know I was pissed because imo he was judged unfairly.
I can only speculate what was going on in Shoma's mind but the reality of those tech scores must of been
a bitter pill for Sho to swallow.

Change is in the winds. The Puppy Channel is ceasing frequent postings, going to monthly or so. A fond memory for me is going to Switzerland (vicariously) with Shoma and a little dog. This was a welcome respite from the pandemic, at least for me. Now, the social media posts are mostly dormant. This is yet another sign of redirection for Shoma. My sense is that whatever the new path, Shoma is in charge of it. With his impressive team, I think we can look forward to Shoma’s skating as part of any new adventure. Timing is uncertain.

It’ll be exciting to see what he chooses to share with fans in the future.

Late to the party but wow... I was moved to tears by his skating this weekend.
I try not to care about the scores too much, but I have to admit I was furious when the free skate score was announced. Even if result is not Shoma's driving force this season I just want him to get rewarded for his skating - it is sublime and in a league of its own (even if there of course are many amazing skaters out there, who I also enjoy a lot. Just not in the same way)

But yeah, he really doesn't have anything to prove. There might be haters out there or people who just don't get it (I don't get them!), but for ones who do get it, I dare to say it is deeply meaningful. I could ramble on for several pages, but let me just end with the words of Stéphane: Shoma is very precious for figure skating ☺️

He did really well in that production in the summer and based on the extremely successful run and all the fun he had with his collaborators, he definitely has options. Plus, he has all the endorsements and modeling them.

He was also dinged for time. I have to go back to the protocols but, really......He did get a deduction for time. His GPF is going to be so clean even Mr. Clean can't fault him.

I've been following this amazing person / magician / skater for 9 years and decided early on that I wanted to stay out of the "wuzrobbed" discussions. Heck, it's a judged sport -- you'll win some, you'll lose some. Takes a strong stomach? heart? to follow a judged sport. Sometimes it's your day, sometimes it isn't. In 9 years, I can honestly say there were only two times when Sho was egregiously and blatantly robbed, and it was ridiculously obvious. Ah, maybe there was something borderline here and there. I can't torture myself over it all...Fast forward to last night when I watched the NBC coverage that I had previously DVR'd. Saw all the jumps in slow motion. All I had to watch was the 4Lo. There is no way that was on the quarter. Tara and Johnny are better judges than I am, and they said the same. Ok, so they took away 3.30 in GOE points from him. Add in the 3.30 they dinged him for, and now look at the total scores. Hmmm. Who won? I didn't even focus on the rest of the jumps. I didn't want to know. Taking 11 points away from someone is pretty strict. Maybe they looked at the BV of the top two guys and realized Sho's was 10 points (?) higher and ....? Also, I think 4everchan said it's a -2 GOE when the jump is on the quarter. Why take away 3.30, which is what they had originally given him?...Time violation -1. Ok, is that because he threw in the emergency 4T-2T, knowing he would risk running over? No disrespect meant to Camden Pulkinen - Camden finished after his music. No time deduction. Was Sho 5 seconds over and Camden was only 4 seconds over?...So on and on and on, you can make yourself crazy.

As far as the puppy channel -- I loved that from Day 1. I'm not able to have a dog, so I was vicariously a dog owner through those entertaining videos. I know some people hated them and said "Enough with the dogs. I'm not following him to follow the dogs." I looked at them as so much more!!! First of all, how many skaters and their families have welcomed us into their homes and lives like that? I loved seeing their home, going for walks around Nagoya, visiting restaurants, seeing how many pairs of pjs Sho has, watching cooking, etc. I'll never forget the day Sho brought tiny little Emma home and began to learn the unconditional love of a dog. I agree with Bcath regarding Switzerland. Those videos were brilliant!...Brother Tree is going to live in Tokyo now, and I think for that reason it would be hard for him to continue with the channel. He thanked everyone, because through having so many subscribers, it was like a little part-time job for him. I don't know how all that works, but you can definitely earn money through You Tube, and he did. He thanked his followers.

The retirement talk isn't for me. It'll get here, and I'm sure he'll handle it gracefully. I would not count on sponsors after retirement. I think some companies want to sponsor athletes, not entertainers. Just my humble opinion.

Interesting that neither Stephane, nor Deniss, nor Sho went to the closing banquet. Well, Sho doesn't go to those anymore, but I wondered if there was a little bit of a statement being made there.

I can't wait for the GPF!!!! I may even have to get up in the middle of the night for it! In the meantime, I'm in it for the long haul. Welcome to the Sho 🎢

Arriba, your post really energized me 😆 I agree with you on the "was robbed" discussions and I also stay out (still staying out!) of it. This is a judged sport, I just think that I have to prepare that one day, things like this will happen and I just have to think of it as balancing out the "good" days I have had before... and believe that Shoma will find a way to handle this situation the best he can. He's been doing this sport for 20 years, I leave all of this to him ahahha.

I remember people who complained here a lot about "why is Shoma only spending time with the dogs" about the puppy channel. Ironically the season after those people complained, Shoma became 3-time Olympic medalist and World Champion, and scored once more in the 300 range (which was weirdly what that person is complaining about) so... That channel gave me so much joy and comfort and peace in very uncertain times, especially during the pandemic. And it was also informative about what's going on in the middle of adorableness. I still remember their generosity in sharing the moment they all took Shoma to the airport before he left for Beijing for 2022 Olympics. It was both reassuring and we all learned that he was going to be part of the Team Event. It was much better than having to rely on gossips or hearsay. They were very open too about the travel restrictions and quarantine requirements and even vaccination status of Shoma... during the pandemic it was easy for misinformation to spread especially for athletes who are allowed to travel under special circumstances, and they really didn't shy away from making sure it's recorded that he is doing everything following the rules back then.

I can't wait for the GPF too. I think my happiness in getting another chance to watch Shoma's programs is winning against any doubts or anxiety that I may have. I really don't want to take any competition for granted because he just don't do a lot of them anymore.

The best thing is "follow the leader". In this case, the leader is Sho. He always accepted his scores without much drama. He always has his "Sho-calculator" going in his head and pretty much can guess what his score will be. This was a rather unusual case that I felt deserved a few minutes of my time. In this case, I was very relieved to realize that I am not blind and/or crazy. I had a friend say "People who can't deal with the scoring should consider following baseball. There, no one hits a home run and then has judges judge whether it was really a home run." LOL. That made me laugh.

There is a reason that there are many organizations cropping up such as Comfort Dogs, therapy dogs, etc. Animals are soothing and non-judgmental. .it's exactly like Sho said. Whether he had a good or bad practice or good or bad competition, Emma didn't care. What she cared about was that little guy she loved .so much and when would he give her her next tummy rub. She'll never know the joy she brought to so many people, especially during Covid! Celebrating birthdays, seeing Mother crying in the yard while she hugged Emma after Sho's first World Championship, welcoming Stephane to the Uno house. In short, seeing the human side of our favorite skater and his family. Doesn't get much better than this.

There was such a huge improvement in his programs from CoC to.NHK. I look forward to seeing further improvements. I have a feeling that he is training with great motivation right now. I can't wait to see him again.

There will always be haters, but the good thing is there is more love and support. I don’t think Shoma lets any negativity from fans or the media get to him. He is a once in a lifetime talent in figure skating. I would say he is GOAT.
