Shun Sato

LOL. NONE of the skaters? Ok. That is a stretch. And you probably wouldn't even pay attention to Shun if he weren't from the holy city.

Good job Shun. Must be a great feeling to know he brought his best when it counted. Congratulations! And his coach lived to talk about it.
I'm sorry that you paid no attention to his skating. Shun Sato is into his third season of being one of the two "full package" skaters in competition with super-excellent Components and several Quadruple jumps (although his Spins seem to have suffered of very late). It's true that Junhwan Cha and my compatriot Adam Siao Him Fa have much impressed me by their progression! But still, "with clean skates" for all, they're not exactly there. Along with Kao Miura and Petr Gumennik, I think that Shun Sato is one of the only skaters of the moment who can (really) deserve 100 at a Short Program?
Overscoring of some skaters takes many forms, as we say in French, "little streams make big rivers" but of course one must watch carefully to see these streams: ignored underrotations and other calls on Elements, egregious Grades of Execution, Components... I'm sure that Shun Sato knows it but you see, in modern and contemporary Japanese culture, it doesn't matter if it wasn't his fault that his Free Skating at the Team Event was underscored and another was overscored, the result was that he was only second and that Japan wasn't going to get the Gold "because of him" — no matter real responsibilities. It's unfair but it's how things are perceived in Japan and it seems to have tortured him quite a lot. I hope that he can heal in time.

The first time we saw Shun skate in person was @ 2021 Skate America in Las Vegas. IIRC, he had a tough short program, but really did much better in the free skate. I was hoping that he would be named to Japan's 2026 Olympic team, and am thrilled that it came to pass. I am over the moon for Shun!

On my Eurosport stream they said during the slow mo after his free skate that in the last days of his preparation for Olympics still in Japan, Shun was "accompanied at the rink" by Yuzu, whatever this might mean as it sounded a bit mysterious. So, yes, coming from the holy city has its perks, it seems. ;)
It also answered my doubts whether Shun expressing in his pre-Olympic interview how happy and grateful he was for Yuzu coming to the rink to cheer him on referred to the pre-Olympic preparations or some earlier time.
Anyway, Eurosport guys could not praise Shun more, were complementing him all along, and saw a bright future for him in the sport.
He really won many many hearts in Milan. So happy for him.

Oh, when did that happen? Completely missed those news. Aw, makes his team event frustation more understandable.

That was an unforgettable event for him. We were at practice and I believe he dislocated his shoulder (right in front of us). He had a tough SP and we wondered if he would skate the free. He did though, and he was a warrior! 5th in the short, 4th in the free, ended up in 4th. He's come a long way since then.

I don't know when or where. I don't know much apart from what I just said.
It was my national Eurosport TV live commentary so it's different than yours, that's why probably you never heard it. I think this is what Shun mentioned it in this post by JOC which was re-posted by Olympics and ISU account with English translation. But it seems to me these are excerpts cut out from some longer interview, maybe available somewhere in Japanese...

I confess that I'm quite happier with the 2030 perspective than with the 4A race, given the risk of injury (unless he's found a way to protect his shoulder) and I really hope that he'll find a way to fix his Spin levels, which would yield more; I mean, if he manages to bring the 4F into his Free Skating, and gets his Spin levels, it will bring way more Base Value than to add a 4A in his Free without fixing the Spin levels.
This being said, among the current top competitive skaters, and without being a jump technician at all, my impression is that he would be the most likely to be able conquer the 4A, which, maybe few people know it because it has been officially ratified, has in fact never been fully rotated.
A 4S would be so welcome! Although as a fan of Yuzuru Hanyu, I have long known this jump under its nickname of "snake"...
