"Signature Pieces"

Some of my favorite figure skaters have performed wonderful programs that have really left their mark, so to speak, on the ice. Here are some of my favorite, all-time programs:

Dorothy Hamill: "Pie Jesu", "One Rock 'n Roll Too Many", "Romance"

Peggy Fleming: "Ave Maria", "Pachebel"

Brian Boitano: "Water Fountain",

Katarina Witt: "Carmen", "West Side Story", "I Am What I Am"

Michelle Kwan: "Angelica Lyrica", "Rachmaninoff" (1998 programs, both of which were masterpieces).

Tonya Harding: Her 1991 long program, skated to "Batman",
"Send in the Clowns", and "Wild Thing".

Kristi Yamaguchi: "Doop, Doop", "Madame Butterfly"

John Curry: "Tango, Tango"

Janet Lynn: "Afternoon of a Faun"

Robin Cousins: "Satan Takes a Holiday"

Katia Gordeeva/Sergei Grinkov: "The Man I Love"

Brian Orser: "The Story of My Life"

Paul Wylie: "JFK", "Henry V", "Miss Saigon"

Jayne Torvill/Christopher Dean: "Barnum", "Bolero"

What are your favorites????

Re: "Signature Pieces"

There are some skaters that just totally envelop their music so much, I dare someone else to ever try to use that music again! (i.e, ANYTHING from Paul Wylie's pro career!) But others that I think of....

G&G will always own "Moonlight Sonata" for me, although I liked Fumie using it as well

Michelle Kwan's "East of Eden"

Katia Gordeeva's "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" as a single pro...

Dmietriev and Miskuchenok (I know, terrible spelling!) with "Liebestrom"

Alexei Yagudin with "Winter". I'm of course biased toward him (!) but that is the only one of his programs that I think he totally made untouchable

Oh yeah, and darn near anything Kurt Browning touches! :)

Re: "Signature Pieces"

Michelle Kwan: "Rachmaninov", "Lyra Angelica", "Aranjuez"
Irina Slutskaya: "Appassionata," "Serenade", "Tosca"
G&G: "Moonlight Sonata", "Vocalise"

Paul Wylie: "Miss Saigon", "JFK", "The Untouchables"
Tara Lipinski: "Anastasia"
Sarah Hughes: "Daphne et Chloe", "I'll Never Say Goodbye"
Bourne & Kraatz: MJ, "Albinoni Adagio" ('03 Worlds FD)

To add a few...

Michelle Kwan - Salome (I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned already! This program still gives me the chills.); Fields of Gold; Romanza

Gordeeva & Grinkov - their 1988 Olympic LP (impeccable unison)

Brian Boitano - Napoleon (power + grace - especiallly in the split jumps and spread eagle)

Mishkutenok & Dmitriev - Dreams of Love (wonderful originality combined with elegance)

Shen & Zhao - Turandot (athleticism & passion)

Sale & Pelltier - Love Story (truly acting out the story)

Rudy Galindo - Swan Lake (unique style, especially in his flexibility and spins)

Paul Wylie's On the Waterfront

Scott Hamilton's Battle Hymn of the Republic
Oksana Baiul had one really sexy number the name I can't recall

Viktor Petrenko's one program that he did for a few years when he was eligible

I think most of Michelle’s programs are masterpieces. I think I could remember which ones were not even better. That would be a shorter list.
Elvis “Dragon”
Torvil and Dean Bolero
B & K Riverdance

Maria B long program when she won worlds and her Sarah Brightman short program
Lulu’s Rach and Butterfly

Oksana’s Swan program
Alexei Arabian program and Winter.
G & G Moonlight Sonata
There’s so many that I can’t remember

Re: "Signature Pieces"

Other favorites:

Tai Babilonia/Randy Gardner - "On Golden Pond".

Judy Blumberg/Michael Siebert - "Adagio for Strings"

Kurt Browning - "Singin' in the Rain", "Les Miserables"

The Protopopovs - "Moonlight Sonata"

Midori Ito - her 1989 World gold-medal winning program.

Todd Eldredge - "Gettysburg", "Independence Day"

And the list goes on and on !!

Re: "Signature Pieces"

I am interpreting signature pieces as the piece I always see these skaters skating when I think of them. (The more standard version would be one they used over and over.
Like Brian Orser The Story of My Life and Michelle EOE and FOG)

Rudi Galindo Swan Lake
John Curry and Brian Boitano, both "Les Patineurs"
T&D Paso Doble, Summertime
Underhill and Martini Unchained Melody
David Santee Them from Rocky I
Eldridge Gettysburg
Brian Orser - unfortunately Sing Sing Sing, and also Theme from the Montreal Olympics, also used for the Canadian news show The National during the 1980's.
Nicole Bobek Dr. Zhivago
Michelle The Feeling Begins, Romanza, Rush (I am a fool for SP's)
B&S Lady Caliph
S&P Love Story
L&T Carmen (actually, my favorite Carmen 2002 OP)
Yagudin Winter, Gladiator
Plushenko Carmen
Irina Schindler's List
Sarah Fosse number
Yebin St. Saens The Swan
Oksana Swan Lake, the feeling begins
Elvis Christopher Columbus
Rakkamo and Kokko Their Nina Rota number about street people
Laurent Tobel Swan Lake (any time I think of Oksana or Rudi doing Swan Lake, I then think of Laurent and chuckle)
Abitbol and Bernadis Addams Family
Sasha-funny enough, I never think of her skating to a particular number. I always see her at practice, standing by the boards, and raising her leg casually into about 170 degree arabesque and then casually raising it further to about 190 degrees. The hair just goes up on the back of my neck thinking about it.

Re: "Signature Pieces"

Other favorites pieces:

Dorothy Hamill - "Zippidy-Doo-Dah".

Linda Fratianne - "Firebird".

Barbara Underhill/Paul Martini - "On My Own"

Katarina Witt - "On My Own" (German language version)

Tonya Harding - "Bad to the Bone"

Kurt Browning - Title Unknown - Lyle Lovett number he used as an exhibition piece in 1989/1990. It featured spoken lyrics and jazzy music. Great piece of music. In one sequence, Kurt skated around the rink, jumped into the stands, and threw himself into the lap of an attractive member of the audience. A real hoot!

Re: "Signature Pieces"

Using Doris' definition of "signature piece" in that it is the one she always pictures the skater doing....

for me, it would be....you all know this, don't you?

Sex Bomb :p

cheers,

Laura :)
