Sofia Val & Asaf Kazimov

A visit to Challenge Cup would be appreciated (sorry, the stream is far too expensive, but we can attend as audience for free - which I am going to do).

AGREED :D Then I guess I'll see you there ☺️

You will!

I just had a thought.

When Asaf was skating for Germany, he was based in Dortmund. So if you get chatting to him again, @DemTuppesSeine, you could use the line that "sure, Dortmund is only down the road from Tilburg. If you competed at the Challenge Cup, you could take the opportunity to go to Dortmund and visit old friends as well".

The fact that it is 115 miles down the road is just a minor detail that can be left out. ;) :p

Actually, that wouldn't work, as Asaf has done the Challenge Cup in Tilburg twice. And they were both significant events for him. In 2022, it was his last competition with Viktoriia LOPUSOVA; and in 2023 it was his first competitive outing with Sofía.

But, it was a nice idea.

We may not have had their music confirmed yet, but Sofía and Asaf are kicking off their season today at the International Ice Dance Dordrecht in the Netherlands.

The Senior Short Dance is due to start at 16:41:00 CEST (14:41:00 GMT / 15:41:00 BST / 17:41:00 MSK). So 9 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 3rd partnership to start. So, third and final partnership to go in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 16:41:00 CEST (14:41:00 GMT / 15:41:00 BST / 17:41:00 MSK). So 9 hours from now.

And that is as much as I can tell you, as the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

International Ice Dance Dordrecht Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 6 in the Short Dance, with a score of 69.74.

Unfortunately, it appears that the event is not being livestreamed (or, at least, if it is, we couldn't find it!) So, I didn't see their programme.

Looking at the protocols, boys but it went well! Only one negative number in the whole table. And that was a anomaly: a -1 from Judge 4 for the Pattern Step. The other Judges marks for it were +1 from Judge 2; and +2 from the remaining three Judges. That this was their worst set of Judges marks says everything about how well the programme went.

The vast majority of Judges marks were +2. In total, they got one -1; six +1's; fourteen +2's; and four +3's. The best set of Judges marks were for the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence, which got three +2's; and two +3's.

As for the actual scores, it is a long time since I saw a set of GOE scores like that! The GOE ranged from +0.80 for the final element, the Roller Lift; to +3.50 for the penultimate element, the aforementioned Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. But these were actually outliers. The other three elements were in a tight goup ranging from +1.60 for the opening Twizzles; to +1.87 for the Pattern Step in the middle. Although the Pattern Step had the lowest Judges marks, it was actually the highest scoring element of the programme. Admittedly, it did have the highest Base Value of the programme. But to be fair, it's BV wasn't much higher than the BV for the two elements done before it.

Sofía and Asaf are currently 4.47 points ahead of 2nd position, Carolane SOUCISSE / Shane FIRUS (IRL), and 4.94 points ahead of 3rd position, Victoria MANNI / Carlo RÖTHLISBERGER (ITA).

As it stands, Sofía and Asaf are looking very good to take the title. But, it is early in the season, and it is not unknown for skaters to make silly mistakes in their first outing and get deductions for things they really shouldn't. So, they have to be careful not to, because the two partnerships behind them could take advantage.

After winning their final competition of last season, it would be lovely for Sofía and Asaf to win their first competition of this season.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 14:41:00 CEST (12:41:00 GMT / 13:41:00 BST / 15:41:00 MSK). So 7 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 6th and final partnership to start. So, third and final partnership to go in Group 2.

And that is as much as I can tell you, as the Time Schedule PDF's are not working.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Sofía and Asaf finished 1st out of 6 in the FD, with a score of 106.93. This meant that they remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 176.67.

Unfortunately, it appears that the event is not being livestreamed (or, at least, if it is, we couldn't find it!) So, I didn't see their programme.

Looking at the Protocols, things went even better than the day before! There were no negative numbers at all, and only one 0, from Judge 2 for the Choreographic Spin that finished the programme. The rest of the Judges marks consisted of eight +1's; twenty +2's; thirteen +3's; and three +4's.

The Stationary Lift-Rotational Lift at the start of the programme were without doubt the best element of the programme. As well as the aforementioned +4's from three of the Judges, the other two Judges gave it +3. It also had by far the highest GOE of the programme, at +3.52, and because it had by miles the highest Base Value of the programme, it was by miles the highest scoring element of the programme. Indeed, it was the highest scoring element of the whole competition, because the other two partnerships that did this element, Carolane SOUCISSE / Shane FIRUS (IRL) and Gaukhar NAURYZOVA / Boyisangur DATIEV (KAZ), got much lower GOE for it.

The rest of the GOE's ranged from +0.96 for the fifth element, the Curved Lift; to +2.49 for the seventh element, the Choreographic Character Step Sequence.

I should add that the Curved Lift had the fourth highest Base Value of the programme, so it was actually the fifth highest scoring element of the programme. And it got good Judges marks, with four +2's; and +3 from Judge 5. The Twizzles had the second lowest GOE of the programme, at +0.97; and relatively low Judges marks, with +1 from three Judges; +2 from Judge 1; and +3 from Judge 5. But even then, because it had the third highest Base Value of the programme, it was the third highest scoring element of the programme.

In short, it was the highest value programme of the competition to start with, and the way Sofía and Asaf executed it made it even higher scoring!

Sofía and Asaf finished the Free Dance 11.99 points ahead of 2nd position, Victoria MANNI / Carlo RÖTHLISBERGER (ITA), and 12.12 points ahead of 3rd position, Carolane SOUCISSE / Shane FIRUS (IRL).

Overall, Sofía and Asaf finished 16.59 points ahead of 2nd position, Soucisse / Firus, and 16.93 points ahead of 3rd position, Manni / Röthlisberger.

Well, they picked up this season exactly where they left off last season, by winning both segments and the title.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

I am so happy for this couple. If they had attanded Worlds and got this score they would have qualified for the Olympics so I have no doubt we will see them
In Italy!!!

I thoroughly agree with that statement!

That has always been the problem in Spanish Ice Dance. One slot at Worlds, and two really good and really well matched partnerships that both deserve to get it. Even going back to the days of the coaches of the two current partnerships.

I'm never sure about how the qualifying works for the Olympics (I really wish it was done the same way as Worlds, but that is too big an argument to open up here). But, I really hope Sofía and Asaf are able to try and claim one of the remaining slots for Spain.

They are so talented and deserve to be a regular fixture at all the Majors.

CaroLiza_fan, I love your passion explaining the numbers!!:clap:

Less than a month for the competition (18-21 sept). Here is the list of the teams competing for the 4 olympic icedance spots:
ISU Skate to Milano Figure Skating Qualifier 2025 – Beijing
I know that so many things can happen... But I think that they really have a chance to go to the Olympics. I've been taking a look at it and I find 5 top teams, including Sofìa/Asaf. I'm not trying to exclude anyone, if there are more teams to add to the "short list", I guess I don't know them enough.

I'm dying to see their programs but, for now, we only have a short Insta video of a piece of the RD dancing to Ricky Martin's Living la vida loca

I go through the numbers because I don't know what I'm talking about!

In the absence of being able to watch the programme, it can be a helpful exercise to an extent. But, there are so many things the Protocols don't tell us.

Right, so it's 4 slots that are up for grabs.

I had forgotten that Allison and Saulius didn't get through to the Free at Worlds, and so have to qualify a slot for Lithuania. You would expect that they will are a shoe in for one of the slots.

Looking at the remaining names, I would say Sofía and Asaf are in with a good shot too.

Thank you!!!  :points:

I know it was only practice, but that looks so much fun! But, given that it's "Living La Vida Loca", that's a given! ;)

Can't wait to see both of their programmes in full.

Wow! That was quick! 😲

The Spanish aren't messing about!

Delighted to hear it!

For some reason, I am getting this when I click on the link:

And when I click on "See Why", this pop-up appears:

I wonder why that is. 🤔

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing them compete in the Olympic Qualifying Event.

Oh, how I hope they do it!

I am so sorry!
It works for me but it's Teledeporte, you know Spanish public Tv for sports, it looks that they also restricts access in Instagram.
They made a short interview to Sofia & Asaf, formal questions & formal answers, probably before the nationality news came out because they don´t talk about it. They look really good and this is what they said:

We're very nervous but eager. We're training hard, thinking it's just another competition, not thinking too much about, well, that in the end we have this last chance. We do see ourselves prepared to advance, that's it, to qualify, but more than anything we're focused on the work and on what we can control.

Good luck Sofía & Asaf!!
See you on Friday!!

And here comes Hielo Español saving the day (as always)

No need to apologise. It's not your fault that the broadcaster decided to geo-block it.

Seeing that page last night was really eye-opening. I didn't know that geo-blocking even existed on Instagram.

It makes you wonder what other sorts of things get geo-blocked on there... 🤔

And here comes Hielo Español saving the day (as always)

Awwww. Thank you Hielo Español!!!  :points:

Hielo Español really is a great resource for keeping up to date with Spanish skating. The people behind it are so dedicated in getting information about all the Spanish skaters out there. Quite frankly, I would be lost without them. Particularly when it comes to videos. I wish more countries would have somebody doing this for their skaters, because most Feds are useless at this sort of thing.

And thank you to you, @Olibritt, for finding both copies of the video! ;)

:thank:

On the eve of Sofía and Asaf doing their SD at the Olympic Qualifying Event in Beijing, I wanted to take the opportunity of sharing something with you.

A week or so ago, @Jumping_Bean found a couple of posts on Weibo with Bio cards for the Ladies skaters taking part, and posted the links in the Pre-Game thread. I have since found the equivalent posts for the Ice Dancers. Unfortunately, you can't link directly to the individual cards, so I am instead attaching Sofía and Asaf's to this post:

Broken link... I have seen them, not sure where but I have (Instagram maybe?).

Strange, it's coming up for me.

I had to take a roundabout way to post it - saving the image and attaching the file to a PM, then opening the image in a new window, and then copying the address over to the post. So, maybe that means it is only viewable by me.

Sorry about that.

They will skate at 8:00 tomorrow (spanish time) but 6:00 AM to see the competition from the beginning:bed:

And an hour earlier for me. But, I am planning on getting up for it. ;)

I've actually already made out the reminder post. I'm just waiting another hour until I post it. I don't like putting reminder posts up more than 13 hours before they skate, and that would be the case with the Kovalevs in Pairs if did the reminder posts this hour.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 13:40:30 CST (05:40:30 GMT / 06:40:30 BST / 07:40:30 CEST / 08:40:30 MSK). So 9h 25m from now.

Skate To Milan Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IigKH5gQiKA

Sofía and Asaf finished 5th out of 19 in the Short Dance, with a score of 68.35.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread during the Warm-Up:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about their programme:

The first comment, from @Ziotic, was something I think we are all starting to wonder:

I should explain, Sofía and Asaf were the third partnership in the competition to skate to Ricky Martin. More than that, despite being only the third partnership to skate in Group 3, they were the second partnership in their group to skate to him.

Anyway, my fellow British member @FlossieH commented:

Veronica Lake, sorry, @Lamente Ariane was impressed with Sofía:

And then added:

Italian member @bartlebooth then replied to my post about the previous partnership, Giulia Isabella PAOLINO / Andrea TUBA (ITA), but added a bit about Sofía and Asaf at the end:

Finally, @triplelutzzzzz agreed with a few of the earlier comments:

Sofía and Asaf are currently 0.79 points behind 4th position, Utana YOSHIDA / Masaya MORITA (JPN), and 0.76 points ahead of 6th position, WANG Shiyue / LIU Xinyu (CHN). The three partnerships are the bottom three partnerships of a group of 4 partnerships covered by 1.71 points, which is headed by Milla Ruud REITAN / Nikolaj MAJOROV (GEO) in 3rd position, 0.95 points ahead of Sofía and Asaf.

Although they are currently one position outside the qualifying positions, the way the scores are mean that Sofía and Asaf have a very good chance of moving into them. Hey, they have a very good chance of getting onto the Podium! They just need to go out there and have a good Free Skate, and then hope that things go their way.

So, let's hope that is what happens!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start tomorrow at 10:00:00 CST (02:00:00 GMT / 03:00:00 BST / 04:00:00 CEST / 05:00:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

Sofía and Asaf will be the 15th partnership to start. So, first partnership to go in Group 4.

The Group 4 Warm-Up is due to start at 12:22:35 CST (04:22:35 GMT / 05:22:35 BST / 06:22:35 CEST / 07:22:35 MSK). So 8h 22m from now.

Sofía and Asaf are due to start at 12:29:20 CST (04:29:20 GMT / 05:29:20 BST / 06:29:20 CEST / 07:29:20 MSK). So 8h 29m from now.

That icedance final was heartwrenching and glorious at the same time. I'm still heartbroken for all the people that deserved the spot too but didn´t make it... Best of luck to all of them.. I needed a good breakfast (including porras) to recover before coming here to celebrate.

Congratulations!! I´m so, so happy for Sofía and Asaf.

I can´t help but see a 12 years history that began at an Olympic qualifier too, with Sara and Adrián winning their passport to the Olympics (that Picasso program... I still watch it, from time to time), the first ever spanish icedance team.

So many things have changed since then, but the two of them were in Beijing today to witness Spain get their second spot at the Olympics, earned by a team that trains in a Icedance School based in Madrid.

Congrats to Sofía & Asaf and to all the people that made it possible, especially SK (this is huge for them). Today it's time to celebrate and tomorrow to work again on those programs to make them as good as possible, because once you get your place at the Olympics, its time to shine as bright as you can.
