Sota Yamamoto

Thanks a lot for the translation, Rainbow! It was funny to read of the flying kiss pose. Well, of course Sota looked a bit unconvincing and Kushida parodied him, if they integrated the kiss just before the axel. Axels don't seem to be an easy element for Sota, so no wonder his mind was elsewhere already. I actually thought the pose was chosen just in order for him to check his hand, as it came so close after his donut spin where he cuts his hand sometimes. Good to hear the boys had lots of fun at the rink.
I know the videos of the songs that are discussed here are on YT, but I'm not much into Jpop, so I'll skip them for now. Are they in Japanese or in English, I wonder?
Aww, hard to imagine Sota bawling his eyes out during a movie. He's a sensitive soul ;)

@KiraraChin , I don't have IG so I haven't heard. Good lord. Not the slightest idea what the boy is thinking, posting scary stuff like this. Apart from sticking out his tongue at the annoying gaijin who always writes moralizing letters about the value of consistency and keeping it safe (if he gets them, that is). Because 'what's life without a little risk', right? It sounds like such a good strategy to do Shoma's/Nathan's jump types without half of their success rate with other jumps, or their step levels... and without any competition-ready quad combo... and without any certainty this won't mess up his one really good triple, the 3F. I think his Challenge Cup 3F had some deduction from the judges, I think a ! . He didn't use to get those for flips, so it looks like a result of the 4F training. Just what he needs to show the judges, that none of his jumps are steady by now. :rolleye: And it sure is a lot of fun to test how much strain the bolts in Sota's ankle can take. No idea what his coaches are thinking. This had better be his own idea, not one sanctioned by his training center. Because it sure is a dumb one.
So glad I can write this here in Sota's thread. If I posted half of what I have to say in the comments on Sota's Twitter, he'd probably block me in an instant. 😬

@surimi I'm glad I'm not the only one who panicked :eek2::eek2::eek2: I agree with everything you said.

I couldn't find the clips on Twitter, so I uploaded them myself:

Cross-posting from Kazuki's Fan Fest, Sota is in Tokyo rehearsing for tomorrow's event with Kazuki and Sena:

According to this tweet, the boys will perform to music from L'Euridice, the oldest known surviving opera!

Translation of Sota's summary report to Yamaha at the end of Yamaha grant support period: https://www.ymfs.jp/challenger/yamamotos/

"Goals:
Aiming to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in figure skating competition. Acquire the necessary skills for the Olympic podium.
Aim to participate in the Beijing Olympics and reach the podium. Practice hard to master more than 3 types of quadruple jumps. I will also work on physical fitness and care to avoid injury. In order to skate quadruple jumps at the Olympics without any mistakes, I will always think and grow towards my goal.

Summary of Accomplishments (March 2022):
I decided to start this season with a new coach to help me break out of my shell in a big way.
Under the new coach, I was able to create new programs, and they turned out to be wonderful programs with Yamaha Challenge Grant. They are the most favorite programs I've ever done.
The Yamaha Challenge Grant has allowed me to spend more time taking care of my body and training to avoid injury. My right ankle, which has been causing me pain ever since I broke it six years ago and had surgery, now allows me to practice without worrying about it at all.
With a new environment and no longer having to worry about the physical aspect, I had high expectations for myself this season, but I was not able to achieve the results I had hoped for in the competitions.
As a 14th and 15th year grant recipient, I wanted to report good results, but I will do my best so that in the future people will recognize me as that athlete from that time."

Thank you for the translation! I am relieved. That does sound better than the original Google-translated version, which made it sound a bit like Sota was resigned to underperforming.
I am at least glad that he's training to avoid injury. Seeing what has been happening to Shun and Kao, for a skater with an ankle that needs extra care, caution is paramount.
I think I now understand better why Sota has posted that 4F footage. If he'd previously pledged to practise more than two types of quads, he'd really dug himself into a hole, so he probably thought he had to post some proof he'd been true to his word. I wish he hadn't pledged to that in the first place. Good results would have been enough of an aim. If he felt obliged to train the 4F, which was never competition-ready, this also explains why he didn't bring back quad combos, unlike some of his kouhai. Learning both would probably be too hard on his body.

Well, good, now that the Yamaha pledge is over, I'm hoping that the 4F will be ditched quietly, and Sota will go back to practising quad combos, which he used to do so they'll be easier to regain, and they'll also garner him more points in competitions.

Guys, I came across this article about Mihoko Higuchi and it seems she says she'll focus on small children and she's not bringing any skaters from Tokai with her? I guess that means Sota is staying with Yamada? 👀

Uh, this is strange, because Mana has just switched to Higuchi. Mana is definitely not a small kid, but she is not from Tokai, so who knows. I hope someone can clarify. :scratch2:
But I don't know if I want for Sota to stay with Yamada, despite her influence. I don't know if her center has any experienced jump coaches, and especially male coaches. And Sota has apparently bonded with the Yesterday program, which is Higuchi's choreo... Hope to hear some news soon.

Excerpts from Mihoko interview above:

”Some may speculate, but the main reason was that I wanted to coach young children more, and I wanted to instruct them properly from the time they were young. This feeling became stronger and stronger, and was the primary reason for becoming independent."

By no means is she denying the position of coaching skaters who compete at the top level.

"I can learn a lot by coaching high-level skaters, and I also get to see a lot of different worlds," she said. "When I first became a coach, I had a desire to go to certain competitions. However, I feel that I have learned so much from coaching up to this point, and more than anything, I have a strong desire to go back to the starting point and train the little kids. I want to polish them when they can be polished, and I want to do that as a coach."

So, in terms of the order of things, the desire to train small children was the first thing that led her to decide to become independent.

"I'm going to be somewhat vague about the skaters, but right now there are about four or five of them. I didn't bring any skaters from Grand Prix Tokai, nor did I think about doing so. I left alone. Some people have applied to be assistants. I just haven't gotten around to talking to them yet."

I hope Sota is successful, wherever he is. But he's had really rotten luck with picking coaches. -_- I don't know much about Yamada's center. I can only hope they have at least one coach who can help Sota with jumps and levels (sorry, not trusting Hongo Sr. much anymore on the latter, I'd rather have Sota back with Miyamoto), and ignite self-confidence in him. I'd hate for him to go back to coaching himself because some coaches, used to the mentally super strong Shoma, don't know what to do with a brilliant adult male skater who headcases.

It seems Sota's and Taichiro's talkshow was a big success yesterday, and the boys made a lot of fun poses for fans.
As expected, no real info except maaaybe this one: https://ameblo.jp/ching-shenlong/image-12740352949-15110832479.html The words above the image say 'new program'. Uhh, seems like Swan Lake imagery to me in that photo? O_o It could be a joke as both boys are making the same pose, or it could be Taichiro's program. If Sota's, then it could go either way. He could skate to the evil magician in black, and he could stop headcasing, and then it would be epic. Or he could skate to the more lyrical parts, and could keep messing up, and then it's in danger of looking like a ripoff of Sena's 2021 FS, just without the jump confidence and without the feathers (as there's no way Sota would wear feathers, of that I am certain).
Nothing to do but wait and see!

Whoa, that's interesting!

In other news, I saw on Sota's Instagram a story with him landing a nice 4T3T combo - is this the return of quad combos in his layout? Once again, as surimi said: Nothing to do but wait and see! 😄

Per Rainbow's words, the blog entry also says Sota's new program is a warhorse. :( The ominous clouds are thickening... If it *is* Swan Lake and if Sota headcases again next season, especially if he bombs Nationals again, you know what it will look like to everyone but insiders: it'll look like he grew desperate enough to copy Sena, hoping the same FS will bring him the same success. And unless he skates to the evil character, then what the bleep. Sota is no girl and no swan. He's made huge progress in the flexibility/body movement department in the last season, that is true, but IMO Hanyu is the only one who would be believeable with any swan-centric part of this ballet. And I hate the warhorse parts of pretty much anything, Roxanne, R&J, Carmen, and swans are up there too. Good grief. I'll keep hoping for a pleasant surprise but I'm very sceptical at the moment. That music has been beaten to death, what new and breathtaking can one create out of it these days?

And here I wanted to gush over Sota showing that combo, even if I haven't seen it. -_- What did the landing look like, Kirara? Would he get +GOE, do you think?

The combo looked beautiful! It would definitely get +GOE :love2:
I really hope this means he's focusing on making his quad combo competition-ready instead of that 4F craziness

About a potential Swan Lake programme... yeah, I wouldn't be keen on it, either. I get that Sota style is very classical, but yeah Swan Lake sounds potentially too girly for him. Hopefully this rumour won't prove true...

Thank you! I hope the combo is still somewhere out there, an someone uploads it. 😌

Well, I think Sota could do well with the 'evil' parts of Swan Lake, but two conditions would need to be met - he'd have to go (at least mostly) clean and be determined (we can't have an evil sorcerer with that purse-lipped expression Sota tends to have when he lands a popped jump. He needs to be in-character all the time). And he'd need to be fast to match the pace. That is not easy to do, especially with quads and expression taking his focus away. Plus we know Sota's jump setups tend to be longer and tentative, so he'd need to do some transitions there as well.
I also hope he leaves the most warhorsey parts out (Black Swan), and goes for music that hasn't been rehashed a million times.

There are good male Swan Lakes, like Max Aaron's - I think he won a GP with it - but it's a big challenge, and I'm not sure if it's worth it for Sota. He's already said he's keeping Yesterday, that's true, so that's one distraction less, but music like SL is a big big upgrade if he wants to really sell it to both judges and audience, and I'm not sure he's ready. Of course Sota skating to SL is just a hint from one fan blog, but... if true, Sota won't have it easy. Let's remember that Sena scored around 260 points with his SL. So beating him and presenting a better program than Sena instead of looking like a ripoff, will be Sota's biggest challenge.

So it's not like I'm going 'impossible, he'll surely fail!', but I'm worried for his scores and confidence if things don't go top-notch, like the last two seasons. I'd hate for him to have to go back to Shirt or another free program if SL proved a tall order for him.

Oh I didn't know he was keeping Yesterday!

These are good points... One of hand, it'd be nice to see him taking a new challenge but yes, they have to make sure he's ready. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞

Sota participated in "Wings for Life World Life," a charity run. According to the organizer, tens of thousands of people take part around the globe at exactly the same moment. There is no traditional finish line. Instead, a moving finish line called a Catcher Car pursues you! You can register to run against a real Catcher Car at a Flagship Run or against the virtual Catcher Car of the Wings for Life World Run App. When the Catcher Car passes you, your race is over, and the distance you achieved appears on the Global Results List. Everything you’re doing is for a good cause because 100% of your entry fees and donations goes directly to research toward a cure for spinal cord injury.

From Chukyo Figure Skating Club, Sota. Yuhama, Chisato, and Saki Isomura entered the run at Toyota Stadium. This blogger reported that Sota, Chisato and Saki ran 4km, Yuhana, 6km. https://ameblo.jp/ching-shenlong/entry-12741757343.html
