State of Russian Ladies in skating: 2014-15 Season

Anna always gives informative and well mannered interviews.

Short summary of the interview with Adelina's coach, Elena Vodorezova:

''There is only one competition left in the season the World Championship. The trio of Russian girls who competed at Euros are in excellent form, hence they will be going to Worlds, and we will focus on our stuff''

I note that most Russian comments to this piece of 'news' are rather negative, people seem to be tired of Adelina's 'comings & goings'. At least Anna can be sure now she IS going to Worlds.

I think it is a calm and dignified response to Mishin's PR campaign for 3A, like: yes, I acknowledge that Lisa is taking this route [of upping tech content] but it is not my priority at the moment.

And she is right that consistency likely to suffer with adding new stuff

Go Anna!! :cheer: Make people who are writing you off even though you're just 16 look like this:

The Tuktamysheva 3 axel might just be talk...................something to distract Radio Nova. Liza is coming off of a big win at Euros and I don't understand why her coach would want to gamble at Worlds with a 3 axel. If she really has a 3 axel and Team Tuk wants to flash it, Liza could save it for the exhibition programme. Just saying, why fix it, her programme, if it isn't broken? Otherwise, yah, go for it. If she lands it, very cool and if she tries it and splats, World Silver is very impressive medal.

As for the state of Russian Federation Ladies, I'd say they are in splendid shape. Tuktamysheva, Radio Nova and Medvedeva are the 3 best Senior Ladies in the ISU. Pogorilaya is wicked good. Then they have a stable full of very promising up and comers. Liza, Elena and Anna might sweep the 2015 World podium. If Med Ved could go.........................I wouldn't be saying "might". In Ladies, Russia is now where the USA was about 15 years ago.............loaded to the gills.

As a footnote, I hope no one is offended that I refer to Radionova and Medvedeva as "Radio Nova" and "Med Ved". Tuktamysheva is "Queen Tut". Along with Edmunds, they are my ISU faves. I haven't thought of a catchy nick for Polina yet. "Po Ed" won't work.

Perhaps they are wanting to get it out there now in preparation for next season - we can all agree that Russian ladies right now is a bloodbath. Though I agree it seems strange to put it in at Worlds - to me it would've been better to try it at Euros first.

True, to do the 3axel at worlds is ridiculous. I don´t believe she will try it. I mean, I really wish this could be true but I just think it does not have logic to risk the gold medal.

The fact that Tuk and Pogo were the Russian "B team" of last season shows how good they are. With Adelina out and Julia struggling, it doesn't even matter, they still swept Euros easily and could sweep Worlds again. Even "grandma" Leonova won Univerisade by a huge margin. There is just so much talent there. And next season the tano twins and Sotskova are likely to join the senior ranks. Wow, it will be really exciting to watch!

I expect 6 Russian ladies at GPF next season.

Be careful, last summer I said I expected 5 Russian ladies in the GPF and that a miracle had to happen for them not to sweep the podium....
And then there was Adelina's injury, Anna's mental troubles and our girl's struggle with herself and more. Let's wait and see.
Especially Liza is at a high risk of injury, Elena is growing scarily fast, who knows if Adelina will ever find her Sochi form again and Yulia reworking her entire technique won't be a walk in the park.
I'm totally rooting for an all Russian GPF and for all of them to slay but I'm scared of jinxing again :'D

Interesting result in the Russian cup. Leonova could not build up the momentum of her Universiade win and became only the third. Despite the standard for her SP win her FS was not good yet another time with 2 falls. She let Yuschenko ahead and Proklova as well. I am glad that Sasha who won is back. Cannot say that her performance was impressive. She missed 2 combos. The second one she could save repeating it in the second half. So she won the Russian cup among the seniors. Hope, it will boost her self-confidence before the next season.

I think Russian Fed is smart enough letting both venerable and promising young skaters try their chances again and again so that despite the 3 only rule the field stays as deep as possible. However, this trick with the second tier competitions will not work next season if Yulia and Adelina are back and Sima and Zhenya go senior. There will be clearly 2 top teams.

I have been wondering about Alena. She seems to have been doing so much better in her SP - and she clearly absolutely loves it. I don't get the same feeling about her FP? Of course, it may be because of all the mistakes she's been making - and those may be caused more by the fact that it is the long program, but still... I think she should keep her short for next season - and try to find a long program that she loves as much. My hunch is that she'd do much better then.

Disclaimer: Pure speculation on my part of course.:)

You didn't know I'm in the GS oracle group? I'm best at anti-jinxing and foresee the future podium.
Until now my dream podiums at GPF and other Nationals have been true. Last season I said Liza would come back strongly and she did. I also said Ashley's FS was nice At the beginning of the season.
And if I say someone will be okay they eventually do well. Have faith in me.

A mixture of stamina and focus? Maybe that's why she doesn't deliver in the LP like she does in the SP.

Alena does have solid jumps, with good GOE when she lands them. She still garners good PCS due to her performance ability. But she just can't seem to hold her nerves through an entire LP... Maybe a more character-oriented program is the answer, since that'll give her something to latch onto for those four long minutes. I actually like her tango LP just fine, but can't dispute that it's not working.

As a huge Alena fan, I would have to agree with you. Something about that FS program evidently isn't working (but as you've said, it'd be nice to see her perform it well to make a fair determination). I do enjoy the music edit. Some folks have an issue with the red dress but it looks fine to me. Even the pseudo-drinking choreography she does in the middle of the program works for me, but tends to baffle a lot of folks.

A change of program would probably be best, assuming she is indeed committed to another season. There is still time to see how the Russian ladies landscape shapes out for 2015-2016, but I can't imagine it will be favorable to Alena's chances in the Russian field...

Oh, there's nothing wrong with the LP as such, I agree - it's a perfectly fine Alena-program. Not one of those "What were they thinking?!" things at all.

And since writing my post I've gone on thinking and I've pretty much come to the same conclusion you have, I think. The thing is, in the SP I - as a viewer - don't even sense any nerves from her. It's as if she just can't wait to go out there and perform and inhabit this character. And that's not the case in the LP - so yes, I too believe that something more character-based something she can lose herself in, is what she needs. And I don't remember where she made the mistakes in the LPs I watched - but she seemed rather tense from the start, if I recall correctly. (I very well might not. :) )

 Huge fan of her as well, and I agree that the FS program isn't working as well as her short. :hopelessness: Something with a lot of character definitely works best for her, as it's what sets her apart from the others. And please, let's hope that she doesn't choose overused music!

Her Universiade performance showed that she could skate a really messy first half, but a really clean second half…so it's probably nerves and focus? Her 3L and 3S seem to be either/or, or neither...never both. Someone mentioned that those were her weakest jumps, so I guess that's another issue...

Her interviews on "rsport" make it seem like she wants to continue to 2018, but that's Google Translate for you. :slink:

Who are those people? I thought everyone said the red dress looked elegant and lovely.

My memory says the same thing. The most concrete instance I remember is Russian Nationals, where she flubbed her opening 3T-3T--the same combination she nailed in the SP. If she consistently made all the errors at the end of the program, we could say it's only stamina. But since the mistakes are scattered everywhere, nerves must be playing a role...

Imo, she actually had a chance--albeit it a slim one--to get Europeans this season, if she'd put out a decent LP at Nationals...

I'm not really a fan - but when she is on, she skates with a joy that is infectious. Also, I respect her for her determination to keep on fighting even when the prospects don't look good, and refusing just to fold up and go away silently into the night, out of the way of the young talent coming up. Of course, I'd understand if she decides to retire - but I hope not. I like there to be a variety not only in styles, but in ages. I think skaters can offer different things at various stages of their skating careers - and that is always fun to see. But yes, I'd support her decision either way.
