State of Russian Ladies in skating: 2014-15 Season

Some remarks after the Russian junior nationals.

Sotskova managed for the first time this season to win over Sakhanovich. She had some shaky landings and a popped axel. Otherwise, her skating was very gracious and mature. If she stays clean she is a sure podium contender and a good promise for the future because she offers what a lot of people are missing - beautiful skating.

Sima is struggling. I was shocked by her very first skating at jgp this season. Since then it has been a rough road. There are rumors about growth issues. I still hope that she will deliver and we will have yet another sweep.

The third triple sweep (in Junior Worlds) in a row looks very unlikely with Sotskova and Sakhanovich looking a tad vulnerable in comparison to Karen Chen. I think that Chen is the most likely silver medalist at this point.

Higuchi should complete the top 5. She could also medal.

Hey, different strokes for different folks. ;)
I for one agree with you on Tsurskaya's outfit. Thought it wasn't the best choice. Though I'll probably draw even more ire from fans, since I cannot temper it with your complimentary words about her skating.

Evegnia, IMO, possesses the most polished and elegant skating out of any of the senior ladies. She reminds me of Miyahara.

I think Wakaba has a higher chance of landing in the podium than Karen, but I agree that she is not to be ignored, therefore I also agree on the high possibily of Russia not having its third podium sweep.

Side notes:

1- I feel very sad for Proklova, the skating gods were not kind to her. I truly hope she can redeem herself next season.
2- What's up with Maria when she finishes skating? Even when it's a good one, she looks like she is about to cry.
3- Sima  I am a big supporter of yours, and I really hope you sort out your issues before next season. Where's that Slovenia spark?
4- Kudos for the youngsters - Gubanova and Nugumanova amaze me every time I watch them. I never know who to cheer for

Serafima is struggling but if she hits, I do think she'll make the podium.

Karen Chen has always been competitive with the Russian girls. She scores high in PCS and she also gets good GOE on her jumps and spins. I do think her main disadvantage is that her 3-3 isn't very reliable. She often gets UR calls on the back end of her combo...but if she hits it, she will score big.

I do think Wakaba has a great shot at the podium this year too. Her jumps are huge and she skates with a lot of speed. I think Karen would score higher than her in PCS but Wakaba would have an edge in TES. I do think those two are a good bet for shaking up the podium this year.

Karen Chen was a revalation at Nats this year. She's had so much hype the last couple of years that I was afraid to even watch avoid a vid on YT. She came on like gangbusters like NNN in 99, but she's got it all already. NNN still needed a lutz, 3/3, stop UR all her jumps, etc. I expect her to podium for sure.

I expect to see the day when lady with 8 triples is the norm.

That will not be for a very long time. We're only just getting to the point were 3-3 combos are the norm, and most women who attempt them aren't even close to attempting a 3A, let alone landing one consistently.

I'm really hoping Liza gets her 3A and breaks far enough from the pack that the other girls are compelled to train harder elements. I'm all for avoiding injury, but as we see with the pairs and men, harder difficulty is the new standard and it's about time.

Ladies skating going the way of men's and pairs would be a disaster... and most ladies won't follow but stack the 2nd half with jumps.

I wonder if there will be outcry if Liza gets ahead of a clean Radionova sp with a 3A fall (which is worth more points than a 2A GOE+3).

I think a 2A with a GOE+1 would be about equal to a 3A GOE-3 plus the -1 point deduction for the fall. Then there's the possibility of underrotation and the fall affecting the rest of the program. I don't think the scenario would be likely to happen.

Mah I know you're right. But still I hope there will be someone who will push the limit.

Supposedly Liza is planning the 3A for the 2nd half of her sp as her last jump because she has said it is mentally taxing rather than physical taxing. If she is able to rotate, which she is, even with a fall it will be worth more than a 2A(+3)

Never.

At Russian JrNats only one girl of 17 did not make 3+3 combo - 11 years old, last of qualified on results of Russian Cup Events.
At SrNats - about the same.

But only European Champion Tuktamysheva plans to try 3A, only in SP. And nobody knows - will she make this try or not.

If Liza can get a 3A in the short and get a few points above (2.5-5) the other ladies it will set her up very well for the long.

She's been very solid in the long this year but a little margin can give her some breathing room and more freedom to perform. The long scores, as Euros proved, will be very close so getting a 3A in the short will be very beneficial to her.

If she performs the long as well as she has been all season and if she got the 3A in the short she wouldn't need to win the long. She only needs one 3A.

When did you hear about this? Last I heard they were still deciding whether or not to go for it. Personally, I think it's a gamble at this point. In all 8,534 times she's competed this season (), she's had the same layout. Changing it up could disrupt her muscle memory and that would be bad. I think if she goes for it as long as she rotates it, it will be worth it. What I'd be worried about is her deciding to go for it and then tensing up at the last minute. That could result in an under-rotation, an under-rotation and a fall or even a waxel...all of those would be a bit disastrous.

Q: If you add a 3 Axel, doesn't it disturb the artistic side of the program, the perception?
A: No, it automatic, and if the jump is in the end, the probability of a mistake is even lower. But in that case you really have go all out, do the best you can.
Seems to imply the 3A goes where her 2A currently is (hence why she moved the 2A to earlier in the program at Europeans... and missed the halfway bonus that could've cost her the title :hopelessness:)

I agree that we probably won't see the 3A this season. Though I'm curious about what she'll do at Bavarian Open.

I am putting all my hopes in Liza, then Nugumanova and Gubanova maybe.
Wakaba and other Japanese junior ladies have set sight on the 3A, even quad, so I hope they will raise the bar.
At the moment, Liza and Wakaba are the most to likely get the 3A done in competitions as they're both explosive jumpers. And Liza has the highest chance since she has passed puberty.

Some updates.

Liza tried 3A in SP in Obersdorf. She fully rotated it but fell. She received 66 anyway but cancelled the FP. Mishin says that the fall happened because she overrotated the jump. He claimed that her 3a gets more and more stable and they plan to try it at the worlds.

Radionova gave an interview to Sovsport which was published with very stylish pictures of her. http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/778145 She said that she grew 9 cm since the last year and continues to grow. But so far there is no toll on her coordination and jumps. She also contradicted Liza's earlier statement that there are no friends among skaters having said that she is a friend with Adelina. Finally she denied the rumors that she was going to change the coach.

Yulia did not skate a month and apparently gained some weight. She also gave a detailed interview. She shared for the first time multiple health issues she had, admitted that after the Olympics everything became worse - she could not easily cope with the growth. She also has to be on a strict diet. She is not sure if the next season is going to be good. She will completely rework some of her jumps. But the key thing is that she is not going to quit at least that's the mood she professed during the interview.
