Cyprus is not a country you normally think of when you think of winter sports. After all, the Mediterranean island is best known as a summer holiday destination. However, since the Cyprus Skating Federation became affiliated with the ISU in 2012, they have been working hard to develop figure skating on the island.
Cyprus has a large Russian ex-pat population, so it is perhaps not surprising that the pathfinders of figure skating in Cyprus are Russian-born.
Kristina Dubrovskaya (originally from Moscow) was the first skater to compete internationally for Cyprus, and became the poster girl for the CSF. However, after a couple of years of competing on the international stage, she is now concentrating on her studies in England.
Since then, the mantle has been taken up by Polina Ustinova (originally from Yekaterinburg) in Ladies, and Nikita Vitryanyuk (originally from Moscow) in Men’s. Polina made her Junior Grand Prix debut in August 2014 at the Ljubljana Cup, while Nikita will make his in August 2015 at the Riga Cup.
However, whilst the headliners have all been Russian, the CSF have also been developing some home-grown talent. Local skaters Giorgia Isabella Sechi (from Paphos), Daniella Ipsarides (from Limassol) and Danai Hadjimitsi (from Paphos) are all now competing internationally, and there are lots of younger girls waiting to follow in their footsteps.
