The dreaded bunion...

I've been skating a lot, and I've noticed the beginning of a bony protrusion on the side of my foot by the big toe. It's kind of scary looking so I'm afraid to touch my foot because it's freaking me out. Anyway, I think it's because of the skates I've gotten a few months ago. I've never seen something like this and I never got this in the SP Teris. Anyway, what can I do to my skates to stop the bunion and make my foot normal again? I don't wear heels and I'm always wearing comfortable shoes. My skates are fairly new and fit the front of the foot well. I can't afford to buy new skates so I'm trying to figure out what to do.

Im not sure if you can do anything.. i just went to buy some new skates and they told me i had one and i should get it removed as soon as possible

Oh yes the "dreaded bunion". I have one on my left foot that is so bad that it looks like it is going to poke through my skin. I have to wear a bunga on it in order to skate. The only way to make it go away is by surgery and I am trying to put that off as long as I can.

I have one on my right foot from badly-fitted shoes years ago. (Word to the wise: if you're a D or "wide' width, don't buy C shoes. I'm just sayin'.) I had my boot punched out to give a bit more room. The only way to get rid of it permanently is surgery, but there are some mechanical things you can do to keep it from getting worse. You might want to see a podiatrist about it.

I started getting bunions as a young teen, not by wearing heels or ill-fitting shoes, but by bad genetics. Yes, sometimes they can just happen and it's not your fault.

The surgery was no big deal. I was wide awake pretty soon after I went into the recovery room. You will use crutches for about two weeks while wearing a special boot. Then you continue to ear the special boot a few more weeks. I had little pain or discomfort after the surgery. Get the surgery done in spring so you don't have to worry about slipping on ice.

Good luck!

Well this bump is not hurting my foot at all. It is the beginning of a bunion and it seems like it has been getting more pronounced in the past few months. Especially since I've been skating everyday in these new boots. I have bony feet so I didn't think anything of this "bone" until it looked like it was more pronounced. I'm not at the stage where I need it removed (I hope not) because it's not that big and it's not hurting me. I just want to "nip" it in the bud, so to speak so it won't get worse. I had an old neighbor who had bunions and they were the grossest things ever and she always wore sandals!

Living in the San Diego area I don't think I need to worry about that!

I put a bunga disk over my bunion, otherwise I wouldn't be able to skate.

hey i had one of those! there's no need to go to the doctor unless it's really big. then they will remove it.. but if its small there's really nothing you can do...

A bunion may occur when too much and repeated stress is placed upon the joints of the toes. Ultimately, the great toe's first joint is distressed and points outward. As this is a bony structure, pads provide only temporary relief but cannot restructure the feet.

Inattention to this can lead deformation of the foot and extreme pain and a need for surgery.

It is best to see a podiatrist who will examine the foot and the footwear, inc. skates and advise treatments.
