Vanessa James & Morgan Cipres

I would like them to tell us if the dynamic of Gabby and Guillaume wining the 2015 world championchip help them to understand that they were able to have the same success or help them to change their training camp. How much the french team is able to help themself to encourage each other and grow. I don't know if there is a "french tour" with almost all french iceskater every year for 2 or 3 weeks after the world competition in order to promote iceskating in France in another country. I know there is star on ice in usa and canada but I don't think there is all canadian team or usa team involved like in France ? or may be I am wrong because we don't really have access to theirs show ?

PM: Your pairs team really feels modern, something not often found in other pairs.

MC: It's natural for us. We're not trying to be a classic pairs team, we're trying to be ourselves, to emulate what we love in life. There is nothing fake from us that people see on the ice. We do seek things that the public would like, but without trying too hard. We just want to express ourselves naturally.

VJ: In life, we like to be well dressed, Morgan is always very well put together even off the ice, so for example, we also look for skating costumes that are a bit different, more modern. When we step onto the ice, before the music even start, we want to be a little bit different. We always pick music that suits us, modern songs, because we are to spend a season listening to them, so we do not want to get bored.

I do love their edginess and their modern feel. They are contemporary and have good chemistry on ice... I like that she does not try to be "ice princess" and they seem to be equal. It's not just the music choices, they just seem to have very cool energy together.

Masters 2017 – Vanessa and Morgan: "This (Could) Be Our Last Season"

Posted on October 2nd, 2017 by Benjamin N.

Just as they are peaking, Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprès are thinking of hanging their skates after this Olympic cycle.

After their short program, Vanessa and Morgan recount their preparation during the summer and talk about their upcoming season... which could be their last.

Vanessa: We are happy with our performance here at Villard-de-Lans. It was not easy, because we were pretty tired after the Autumn Classic competition last weekend in Montréal, we went back to Tampa in Florida to train before coming here. A lot of travel in a relatively short period of time! We didn't have any legs left for the short program, so what, it allows us to train in different conditions, when we are fit, when we are less. This competition is more like a practice for us, with the bonus of the judges' feedback on what works well, what doesn't, to refine the program.

Morgan: Last year, we learned a lot with our new coaching team, we discovered our own style, and we most of all wanted to translate that on the ice... We went all out! The season went really well, so it raises the bar...

Vanessa: We had 3 weeks of vacation in May, with two weeks of rehab because I hurt my back, then we went back to training very quickly. We had to find programs everybody agreed with! When we thought we had a good idea, John or Sylvia, our coaches, would not like it, when they would like it, then John Kerr, our choreographer, thought it could be better. It was Morgan who found the music for our free program, around mid-May. For the short program, it was my idea, we were already mid-June, when I played the song at the rink, everybody unanimously agreed right away!

Morgan: Our preparation this summer and our management of this season is more strategic than last year, smarter. We started early like before, but we have already planned less intensive phases to decompress, because the season is going to be long and we need to pull through it! We started well in Montréal with winning the Autumn Classic, the podium of important competitions, all is up for grab! We're supposed to end our season at the World Championships in Milan... Unless we come back from South Korea with a trinket, in this case, I'm not sure if we'll be motivated enough to do one more competition.

Vanessa: Logically this season is our last. Of course, this could change, but it would make sense to retire. I just celebrated my 30th birthday a few days ago! When we see the level of skaters like Lola [Esbrat] and Andrei [Novoselov], we think our succession has arrived.

Morgan: It's never really easy to know when to stop. We try to stay clear-headed, on one side we've never been better, on the other, we do not want to do a season too much. The years start to take a toll...If the fédération offers me a million Euros to continue, I'm all in! But more seriously, the end of this season seem to be good timing. After that, I have some ideas, let's say it's in the works. Everything also depends on possible opportunities that might arise.

Vanessa: On my end, I don't really want to think about next year and after retirement. I rather want to stay concentrated on my job, there's already enough to do as it is! I think that I will not stray too far away from the skating world, it's an important part of our lives.

Before you turn on the waterworks at the end of the season, rather think of supporting them, and enjoying their performances, if possible live in a competition, if they are as good as in the Masters, you will not forget them.

Thank you!

Revealing interview. They give so much of themselves physically and emotionally, it's a tough life with no guarantee of medal success. Thank the heavens that they stuck with it and can now witness the fruits of their hard work and dedication. The judges now know the world is watching..
Great article photo too! I'm also obsessed with Morgan's hair, it really needs its own fb page! :luv17:

The starting order for the SP is up and Vanessa and Morgan are skating last - I hope that proves to be a good omen for them! I won't be able to watch live as the SP will start at about 4am local time, but I'm wishing them the very best of luck and a flawless skate. And I'll be catching up with the videos asap tomorrow morning. :)

Thank you Lived in Inch again for translation - and thanks to the rest of you for your questions ! I'm still in Germany but on my way to Milan .. hope I'll arrive in time 🤞
I'll try to upload videos on my youtube channel (Julie Wie) as soon as possible !
cheers
Julie

Just caught the very end of the interview... they seemed very serious; both answered questions in English. Their popularity is evident... Morgan talked about neck strain... so happy for their SP placement!! Lots of positive comments and support in the Worlds Pairs SP thread. :agree:

Sooo Morgan has a neck sprain/injury sounds like whiplash & wasn't able to train with Vanessa for a week & a half.. Everything crossed for the FS!
