Vincent Zhou

yyyskate - I think you should be added as an advisor to Vincent’s coaching team :D

You are welcome :)

Vincent's JP Fan account uploaded a 2 part fancam to the complete "Take On Me" exhibition. I knew someone would have recorded the whole thing. Loved the cantilever and splits! Dear Vincent, we love you very much but you need to take some dancing lessons .

Oh dear! Kudos for stepping out of his comfort zone, but a little glad this wasn't taped at the Orlando SOI show! Hopefully they will appreciate this in Korea. LOL

I liked it! Okay, he's no Jason Brown yet in the dancing department, but it's a good start!

aww - hope no one is expecting Jason level of dancing and showmanship from Vincent yet lol
I liked it too!

It's cute, like something you'd see at a JGP gala. But hopelessly out of his league at SOI.

hopelessly or not, Vincent will still tour with SOI in 6 stops.
it is actually hopelessly adorable  a nice change of taste.

I agree - I don't think he would be that out of his league? I will be supporting him 1000% at the show :D

Unfortunately I do think he'll look out of place, especially compared to the other men. Karen is the next youngest and even she is quite a bit more polished a performer. I haven't seen many clips of Bradie so I don't know how her programs compare.

Okay, I just mustered up my courage to watch Bradie's Nationals Ex video. She may be doing something completely different at SOI but this is the only thing I can use to compare her.

No disrespect to the girl, she may have great technique, but watching her skate is akin to watching paint dry, YMMV. Now I realize Vincent is not everybody's cup of tea and there are probably many out there who find his skating just as boring, but this is his FF and I can compliment him and be biased as much as I want ;). Vincent may not be as technically clean, but he has heart and soul, elegant lines, and plenty of raw talent that is waiting to be polished. I don't see that in Bradie. The funniest part of the video is this comment: wow, who is her costume designer? Please design for Nathan and Vincent! :laugh2:

As for Vincent's newly choreographed "Take On Me", it's obviously very rough and junior, but then again, he didn't work with a professional choreographer and clearly hasn't had good dancing coaches. Hopefully, the Ice Fantasia Show will provide inspiration and star appeal to help him improve his program as time goes on. I am glad he is doing something drastically different from the "Sun" exhibition, broadening his horizon and having fun while skating.

I see plenty of potential for improvement once he fully grows into his body and fills out his frame. You can clearly see in this Sep. 2017 SAP performance of "Moulin Rouge" that he is much smoother and more expressive, since he didn't have to deal with the growth spurt and all the jumps. Johnny has mentioned in all of Vincent's US Nationals that he is a very musical skater. He just needs to find a great choreographer to bring that out of his program amidst all the jumps, someone like Tom Dickson.

P.S. Yes, he should totally dress up as one of the A-Ha guys, but don't know how hard it would be to skate with a jacket like that. Maybe a denim shirt or jacket.

awww, Vincent if you don't mind I can be your friend.:luv17:

LOL, you need to get in line, Mirai already tried asking and it sounded like Vincent wasn't too keen with the idea. First she ate his food, then she pestered him with silly questions. But seriously, Mirai has the same bubbly flamboyant personality as Adam and Vincent is the thoughtful, introverted type. Oil and water.

it is hard to believe that Vincent would sacrifice Stanford for his figure skating dream to do college at Colorado Springs
He is young enough to experiment going to a college and see how it works out. He can always switch later on if needed. Besides, Vincent is too smart for most kids of his age so it won't do any harm to skip a university for now. We'll have to wait and see if he is able to talk his parents into accepting his decision.

... I feel for Vincent as I grew up most of my life in Spanish-speaking countries and everywhere I went, I stuck out like a sore thumb and was picked on. But then again, after moving to LA, where there are plenty of Asians, I still didn't make a lot of friends in school due to my "social-awkwardness" and "unpopular" looks, LOL. It's just a phase most "unpopular" kids go through. I'm sure now that he is an Olympian, he can put all of that behind him. But still, group hug for Vincent. :ghug: and :yay: for focusing on his skating.

Little sidebar re high school in Colorado Springs:

I recall that Agnes Zawadzki said in an interview long ago that she did not socialize much with school-mates in Colorado Springs. Was more comfortable in the company of rink-mates.
So perhaps(???) the lack of acceptance for Vincent had as much to do with his laser-focus on skating as with his ethnic background???
(I myself am of Asian descent, so am not trying to diminish that part of Vincent's identity. It most definitely can be a double-edged sword.)

Throwing back to Vincent's birthday celebration, b/c my earlier post mentioned this photo:

IMO, Vincent is lucky to work with Josh (who choreographed some of his own competitive programs, BTW).

I suppose "professional choreographer" can mean different things to different people.
All I know is that quite a few competitive skaters (who still are competing or who left competition quite recently) also are choreographers for others -- and they seem to be accepted by most on GS as full-fledged choreographers. Josh deserves the same respect, IMO.

*Hey, that's what Japanese fans want to know ;)

Vincent uploaded pictures of himself in Japan and caused quite a stir among his Japanese fanbase :eeking::laugh:. Glad he has a chance to get some R&R before heading to Korea for the Ice Fantasia Show next week. He must have visited Takatsuki Ice Arena at Kansai University, Osaka, as he took a picture with Mie Hamada (Satoko's coach).

Hope he gets to meet up with his loyal Japanese fans and they can upload more pictures. Have a great time, Vincent!

Poor Vincent is being "stalked" by his Chinese fans through his iPhone photos, which are posted on the Chinese fanclub Weibo account. Looks like he's still checking out the tourist sites in Osaka. Hope he has a chance to eat some good sushi and Japanese delicacies.

Latest Japanese tweet confirmed that Vincent participated in Kansai University's Faculty of Information Studies Freshmen's Welcome Exhibition in Osaka on April 14th. He exchanged the lemon yellow polo and washed jeans for a sporty all black look and must have skated to "Take On Me" since there is a picture of his splits on the University webpage. Satoko was also part of the exhibition.

Vincent is currently sightseeing in Kyoto and having a wonderful time.

It's kind of sad that Vincent is appreciated more in Japan and Korea than in his own country.

That's just the reality of men's figure skating in the US. I'd argue that even Nathan and Jason are also more popular in Asia than in the US. But all things considered Vincent is doing pretty well for his age. Look at someone like Max. Former US Champion and arguably had a better season internationally than Vincent did, but received no major show invitations this year. Or Ross who finished 2nd at Nationals and didn't even get invited to the New England SOI shows.

Hi, thanks for sharing your perspective. As you can see, my post was deemed inappropriate and removed. My apologies for ruffling anyone's feathers. I have read far more negative and dismissive posts around the forum, and within other FFs. But far be it for me to complain. Did not mean to upset anyone's sensibilities. I will keep my opinions to myself. It's not like anybody reads them (except for you in this rare instance, sheetz, LOL).

I do understand completely why figure skaters are more popular in Asia (and Russia) than here in the states, but that wasn't exactly what I was lamenting. Sorry for any misunderstandings. No hard feelings. Peace out
